What can a book fair do for you? There’s very little that they can’t do for you, really. They attract, quite literally, tens of thousands of highly passionate literary aficionados to further the art form that is the book. The London Book Fair alone attracts tens of thousands of attendees from over one hundred countries, and members of the media as well. Book fairs are positively packed with crowds of people determined to find new books to read and authors to follow. The book fair is a unique and unparalleled experience, and your self-publishing book belongs there.
It’s easy to think of book fairs as the stomping ground of the New York Times bestseller list, but they’re also for aspiring self-publishing authors, and the choice to include a book fair or two in your marketing plan may literally change your life … and sell a lot of books! Think about it: your book is a bonafide example of an author designing and creating and publishing exactly what he or she envisioned. Isn’t that exactly the sort of ethic and product that has a home at book fairs? Artistic integrity creates its own gravity, its own magnetic attraction to readers. Fair-goers pick up on authenticity right away!
A book fair revolves around authors and the worlds that they create. People can order whatever they like online — but people still flock to book fairs everywhere around the world. And why? Because they want to participate in the social world of books. They want to meet the people who make books happen.
If you’re worried about having to manage a booth at a book fair alone, here’s a solution which might appeal: Companies like Outskirts Press send representatives to book fairs for you. We sponsor booths to feature self-published books at home and abroad. We pay careful attention to the best ways in which one can section off space and create a warm and welcoming atmosphere out of a fair or exhibition space. We advocate for your book and send all leads for interested buyers directly to you for follow-up.
So, how do you make your book the star of the show? Good news, it’s easy! Log into your Publishing Center at www.outskirtspress.com and click on the Marketing Solutions menu. There, you’ll find a number of individual book fairs, such as Beijing or Frankfurt as well as a combination tour package. We have just the right way to help you take your book global!
You’re on the road to self-publishing, but that road sometimes seems more like a dirt track lost in a forest of wild ideas than a well-marked strip of asphalt. You’re carrying the one thing you can rely on to see you through–your work, and your work ethic–and you’re ready to take the next step. Which way do you turn? You’re surrounded by a plethora of advice: Get an agent! Purchase an ISBN! Launch a promotional campaign! And all of these suggestions have their merits, but you’re not quite sure your book is ready to meet the world. It’s time to take another look at your book–as a physical object, that is.
Presentation matters, and it matters a lot. Luckily, a whole slew of resources are available to help you whip up the perfect book jacket and interior page design. Here are a few thoughts to get you started:
Design with genre in mind. There are benefits to paying attention to the visual brand of your book’s genre. Think about it–we know almost immediately, instinctively, when we run across a book of crime fiction by its bold and blocky type-faced titles, or a book of post-apocalyptic literature by its distressed pages and fractured images. There are advantages to standing out as an exception, but every choice you make must be intentional and must be weighed against losing existing readers of your book’s genre.
Choose your typeface and images carefully. It goes without saying that you should choose images you own the rights to, or that fall under the Creative Commons license. But you should also be careful to choose each and every design element–typefaces included–based on its capacity to appeal to a large audience. Steer clear of fonts and images that feel amateurish!
Make it yours. One of the most common questions asked within the self-publishing community is: “Should I pay someone else to design my cover?” Ultimately, the answer is up to you; however, you should never underestimate the power of attraction that a professionally-designed cover will exert over potential readers. Paying someone doesn’t have to limit your creative control over the design, either: at Outskirts Press, you will be in constant communication with your design team!
Fresh eyes are vital. The best decision you can possibly make for your book, both in terms of appearance and content, is to have it professionally edited. No matter how many times you’ve read your own text, you’re always going to miss something, and readers notice both the most insignificant of errors and the beauty of a finely polished text. We all strive to avoid the former and ensure they notice the latter!
You don’t have to face the dirt track and the forest alone. Outskirts Press is on hand to provide you with all of the resources you need to put together a beautiful, perfectly crafted book that will stop new readers in their tracks. From cover to cover, page to page, and start to finish, our team of dedicated staff will help you take that next step!

If you’re on the fence about ebook publishing, this might be the year to pick a side. There are recent developments in the ebook publishing world that could be a boon for self-publishing authors who have taken advantage of the ongoing growth in that market.
Namely, Amazon is stepping up its game in 2014. The online marketplace and bookselling giant is dangling the proverbial carrot to book buyers with the introduction of new technology and the reintroduction of a popular e-reading device.
Here are a few developments at Amazon that may convince you to hop on the ebook bandwagon today:
The introduction of the Amazon 3D smartphone. We don’t toss around the term “game-changer” lightly, but the June 18 release of the as-yet-unnamed 3D Kindle phone could be just that. The early buzz is that the 3D interface is attractive and responsive, reportedly using face- and eye-tracking software to help readers navigate around the page.
The return of Amazon Kindle DX. The 9.7-inch E Ink reader is back and better than ever, boasting updated software and an attractive $199 price tag. The device includes WiFi and 3G connections, built-in stereo speakers and 3.5mm jack, and enough room to download up to 3,500 books.
Amazon Kindle Fire HDX. Pitted against the iPad Mini, this 8.9-inch tablet is a less expensive option than any Apple device at a paltry $379 and can do most of the same things. With the right apps, this so-called “productivity machine” not only displays ebooks beautifully, but also takes handwritten and typed notes, among other functions.
New and cheaper devices means more readers will join the ebook revolution, making the summer of 2014 the perfect time to get your book on the ebook market!
