10 Ways Self-Publishing Authors Can Promote Their Books During National Reading/Small Press Month

10 Ways Self-Publishing Authors Can Promote Their Books During National Reading/Small Press Month

March 1 marks the beginning of National Reading and Small Press month. This is the perfect time to revamp your current marketing strategy and try some new things. After all, readers are more inspired to buy books this month. As a self-publishing author, here are the top 10 ways to use this to your advantage:

  1. Come up with a marketing plan for your book. It may be helpful to speak with a professional that can coach you through coming up with a plan and taking action on those items.
  2. Contact your local bookstore to see what their policy is for carrying small press books. You may consider offering your book on consignment.
  3. Contact your local newspaper to remind them that it’s small press month. Write a press release (or have someone write one for you) and send them a copy. Be sure to call them shortly thereafter to make sure they received it.
  4. Contact your local library to suggest they feature small press titles this month, including yours. Make sure to have plenty of free copies to give away.
  5. Send out copies of your book to get reviews.
  6. Make sure your Amazon listing is up to par. You should have a Kindle Edition, Search Inside the Book, and a Book Video Trailer on your book’s Amazon page.
  7. If you haven’t already done so, buy your own domain name and start a blog. Blogging is a great way to reach new readers and possibly increase the sales of your book.
  8. Schedule a free webinar or teleseminar. Everyone has an area of expertise – what’s yours? Share your gift with the world. This will not only help increase your network, but you will be able to gain notoriety as an industry expert.
  9. Take a Virtual Book Tour. This is a cost-effective way to get yourself in front of your audience without leaving the comfort of your own living room.
  10. Offer freebies for people who buy your book. In your book’s description, you can let your potential reader know what they will get for free if they email you a copy of their receipt. eBooks, whitepapers or other virtual gifts are a great option due to their low cost and ease of delivery.

Overall, the most important thing is to have fun marketing your self-published book! Don’t take things too seriously and make sure you make the best use of your time this upcoming month.

DISCUSSION: Which of these strategies (or others) do you plan to take action on this month?

Kindle Formatting for Self-Publishing Authors – Is My Book Supposed to Look Like That?!

You’re stoked that your book is finally available for sale in the Amazon Kindle Store. You’re impressed by Amazon’s royalty agreements. Then you see your book on your brand new Kindle…

Amazon Kindle Edition

Why does it look like that?! That is not how the book looks when it is printed!

It makes sense that self-publishing authors (especially those who don’t regularly read books on a Kindle device or app) might expect the Kindle format to look just like the physical version. After all, a lot of time was put into formatting your book for print.  However, it is important to understand how these two versions differ and why. Once you have a better understanding of how the formatting benefits the reader, you will appreciate your new Kindle Edition in all it’s simplicity.

  • Limited Fonts – Because the Kindle device supports only a limited number of fonts, the fanciness is cut here. So, if you used many uncommon fonts in your book, you can expect the fonts to be changed when you have your Kindle Edition created.
  • Minimal Formatting – Readers view Kindle files on the device itself, wireless phones, and computers. In order for the files to be easy for all users to read, it is necessary to eliminate excess formatting.  Simplicity is key to versatility, and Kindle is no exception.
  • Images and Text Wrapping - Images show differently on a Kindle device than on the apps.  The main difference is that the Kindle device is black and white only, while the apps will show the images in color.  The other difference users will experience is the size of the images, due to differences in screen size.  These things will also affect whether or not text appears around the image or if it is bumped to the next page.
  • No Need For an Index – If your print format contains an index, you should know that adding an index to a Kindle file is akin to adding one to a website. Who needs an index when there are search engines? The same is true for Kindle.  Kindle users can easily search on the device or app by the keyword or phrase and find every location where it exists within the book.

A Kindle book will never look exactly like a print book and that’s a good thing!  Kindle books are designed to be read with ease on a Kindle device or app.  Reading a book on a Kindle can take a bit of getting used to, not only because of the minimal formatting but also the different feel of “turning” and bookmarking pages and making notes.  Regular Kindle users are used to these things and adding superfluous formatting will only make it harder to the user to read.

Self-publishing authors can experience a great deal of success from Kindle sales alone — especially with their attractive royalty agreements. However, you must have correct expectations of the Kindle Edition — including how it’s formatted and why that’s beneficial to the reader.  Once you do, you will be able to recognize Kindle as the priceless gem that it is.

Self-Publishing Author Spotlight: Jerry Snodgrass at Hastings Super Bookstore

Self-Publishing Author Spotlight: Jerry Snodgrass at Hastings Super Bookstore

Jerry Snodgrass Book SigningOn January 29, 2011, self-publishing Outskirts Press author, Jerry Snodgrass, held a book signing at Hastings Super Bookstore in Killeen, Texas. At the event, he was able to sell and promote all three of his published titles: Forgotten Honor, Lone Star Destiny, and Moments to Remember 1957.

Gerald “Jerry” Snodgrass grew up in the small college town of Indianola, Iowa, in the fifties. After high school, he entered the military, fulfilling his childhood dreams. A Vietnam veteran, he is the author of Frontier Justice and Forgotten Honor. His love and fond memories of growing up in the Midwest, and of being a graduate of the high school class of 1957, prompted him to write Moments To Remember 1957, a fictional memoir of the senior class of Indianola High School. Jerry currently resides in Killeen, Texas, with his wife Elizabeth, and their little dog, Stormy.

Recently, Jerry’s writing career was jump-started, and he was invited to publish a book with Strategic Book Publishing. Jerry was kind enough to stop by to answer a few questions about his keys to success with his fellow self-publishing authors:

OP: What is your author platform? How did you build it?

JS: Internet. Email. Posters. Flyers. Marketing visits to local book stores. Word of mouth by readers. Pursu[ing] book signings, even in grocery stores. My first book signing was in a grocery store.”

OP: We saw on Strategic Book Publishing’s website that any authors they “pick up” must have a minimum of 1,000 book sales in the past year. How did you accomplish this?

JS: They took a chance on me and I split the publishing 50-50.”

OP: If you could start your self-publishing journey all over, what would you do differently?

JS: “I would do more editing. Edit, proof, edit!!”

OP: If you could pass one piece of advice to other self-publishing authors, what would it be?

JS: “Follow the instructions your publishing marketing people tell you. The author sells the books. Get out and market your books. Get posters, flyers, and business cards made. Present yourself and your book to local book stores. Attempt to arrange book signings.”

OP: What are your plans for the future (as far as publishing is concerned)?

JS: I write daily, just trying to come up with the right subject. I have started screenwriting. I am positive that Outskirts Press is the right fit for me. I hope my next book will be published by Outskirts Press.”

Self-Publishing Virtual Book Tour: Letters From Wheatfield by Patrick Shannon

Self-publishing Outskirts Press author, Patrick Shannon, is taking his latest book, Letters From Wheatfield, on tour – a virtual tour, that is. He will be featured on several blogs over the weeks and months ahead so keep your eyes peeled to learn more about him and his book.

Luckily for us, Patrick was kind enough to answer a few questions as the tour was getting started so that we can give you a sneak peek into the mind of the creator of Letters From Wheatfield.

_______________________________________________________________

Letters From Wheatfield book cover

OP: Tell us a little bit about Letters From Wheatfield. What is it about?

PS: It’s about a couple from Manhattan who retire to a tiny Montana town and discover a virtual “parallel universe” of eccentric folks and wacky situations. They send letters to a cousin back in Manhattan, vividly describing their hilarious encounters.

OP: Why did you decide to write this story?

PS: Actually, from living here in my adopted town of Conrad, Montana. Approximately 40% of the stories in the book are based on actual events here, gussied up by my imagination, of course.

You see, Montanans, in general, are very witty people, and the residents of Conrad just seem to have a greater share of that trait. So when you have a town full of congenial, fun-loving characters like that, you have a community that is one heckuva good time.

And there is another factor. Like my fictitious town of Wheatfield, Conrad lies within the “Pixie Triangle” – an area where loony things just sort of happen. For example, there was an incident recently, in a nearby town, that would have been a surefire candidate for the Wheatfield Book Of World Record Vegetables. (I swear this is the truth. I have the newspaper clipping to prove it.) A black bear was trying to force its way through a woman’s kitchen door, and she successfully beat it off with a giant, 14-inch zucchini from her garden. The article included a picture of the zucchini and a yardstick. Now, if you can live in a place like this and not write a book, there’s something wrong with you.

OP: What types of readers would be interested in this story?

PS: I think anyone who has a sense of humor and likes to laugh will find it worth their time. If they happen to come from or reside in a small town like Wheatfield, I think they will readily identify with the crazy stuff that can happen.

OP: What is special about your book?  What differentiates it from other books in the same category?

PS: I think the fact that so much of it is based on actual situations gives it an authenticity that otherwise wouldn’t be there. Several of my reviewers who have small town backgrounds have commented on this.

OP: Have you published any other books? Do you plan to publish more?

PS:  My first book was for young readers in the 10 to 14 age group. Its title is Viva Cisco and, in keeping with my style, it is humorous. I have a third book ready to go. Its called Viva Laughter, and I like to think of it as my tour de force as a humorist. If I can get the necessary releases for my use of a few well-known names, I will try to get it published.

OP: Thanks for your time, Patrick! We look forward to learning more about you as you visit other bloggers!

Self-Publishing Book Spotlight: Duckegg & Persons of Interest by NovaMelia

Self-Publishing Book Spotlight: Duckegg & Persons of Interest by NovaMelia

In her latest book, Outskirts Press author, NovaMelia, creates an intriguing narrative of confused rumors, local ethics, pharmaceutical experimentation and two remarkable dogs as one small town becomes the focal point of a community gone temporarily mad.

Duckegg Duckworth is always honest with himself, but often blatantly dishonest with others and so ends up suffering the sorrow of loss and the shame of his unintentional harm to others. Yet he has his moments of pride and even the exuberating experience of becoming the town’s hero in the small New England town where a large pharmaceutical company has set up a facility which is suspected of using local animals for experimentation.

Meanwhile, Duckegg’s younger brother is creating his own mess between the townspeople and the company; the company chemist has taken a liking to Duckegg’s mother, who’s husbandless, but not a widow; and Duckegg’s little sister unknowingly shines a light in the darkest of moment’s. Throughout all the growing drama, two canines, Maximilian and Hot Dog, romp in and out of the town’s affairs and the company’s woes as everyone approaches their day of complete madness.

Duckegg & Persons of Interest provides a suspenseful and entertaining read as this collection of quirky townsfolk and suspicious company men all begin to have their opinions and attitudes turned tupsy turvy while the large corporation and the small community try to work out a resolution to their contrasting values and intrinsic distrust.

Guest Post: 7 Ways to Build Your Facebook Community for Self-Publishing Authors

Guest Post: 7 Ways to Build Your Facebook Community for Self-Publishing Authors

7 Ways to Build Your Facebook Community:
Imagine Your Book Before Thousands of Faces

By

Kirk Byron Jones, Ph.D.

Author of Say Yes to Grace: How to Burn Bright Without Burning Out and Creator of “Say Yes to Grace” Facebook Page

If you could place a full page ad about your book in the world’s largest publication each day for free, would you?  It’s a no-brainer; of course you would!  Free advertising on the world’s largest publication platform by far (500 million users and counting) is exactly what social network and mega-communication force, Facebook, offers.

By the time I published Say Yes to Grace: How to Burn Bright Without Burning Out with Outskirts Press in December, 2010, I had already been promoting it for two months on my personal Facebook page (1,900 friends) and a separate “Say Yes to Grace” page, currently nearing 12,000 supporters. After only five months, thanks to Facebook, my book is literally before thousands of faces each day, and nicely positioned to sell hundreds if not thousands of copies over the next few years.

Here are 7 ways to build a growing and popular Facebook community for your book:

  • Use your book title and cover as the name and profile picture for your page. Do not be tempted to do otherwise. Using your title and cover means that people will not only see them prominently presented on your page, but each time you post a comment on Facebook. Your title and cover are guaranteed multiple sightings each day.
  • Post regularly on your site. I post a “Grace Inspiration” each morning that usually results in over 100 responses and/or comments.  When posting, keep it simple and clear. Enhance your post with a picture from time to time.  Regular posts will help to make your site required viewing. Each viewer is a potential book buyer and promoter.
  • Respond to the posts of others.  Build buyers through dialogue, and not just dialogue related to your book. Read each post to your page, “liking” and making brief comments as you go. Viewers should receive the impression that you are not only speaking, but you are listening as well. Moreover, their comments will educate you about the concerns and issues that really matter to people, providing inspiration and guidance for your future posts.
  • Post brief excerpts from your book. Though people will see your book cover each time    they see your post, you do well to remind them of the availability of your book by placing the title at the beginning or end of a brief book excerpt. Make sure the excerpt you use is an example of your strongest writing.  Here is an example:

“There are times when the most loving thing to do is to let go. Love releasing is a sign of love in its purest expression. Love, free, fine, and full has no needs; it is its own fulfillment.” (From the book, Say Yes to Grace: How to Burn Bright Without Burning Out by Kirk Byron Jones.)

  • Purchase Facebook Ads to direct persons to your Facebook page.
  • You don’t have to  spend money to secure significant Facebook exposure on a regular basis, but you can. And, it is cheap and easy to do. Facebook has done a good job of explaining the process on their site.  My most successful ad is one that includes a striking image (a tree that appears to be dancing) and the question, “Where do you see grace?” Striking image and question is working for me. A “working  ad” is one that captures the attention of a viewer in an instant and makes them “want” to click on your ad, and visit your Facebook page or website.

  • Run Special Offers. Your page affords a magnificent opportunity to make special offers to your supporters. Make sure to clearly state the offer, place a deadline on it, and encourage viewers to share with their Facebook circle of family and friends. Here is a sample offer that included a link to amazon.com:

HAPPY GRACE BOOK SATURDAY! Today Only: 1. Purchase SYTG at amazon.com. 2. Email your purchase confirmation to me at kjones58@aol.com, and request a free signed copy of one of my other books listed at amazon.com–You Choose! 3. Be sure to include a mailing address in your email in order to receive your free signed book. 4. Please share this post with your Facebook friends you think may be blessed by it.

  • Set aside time each day to post, dialogue, and manage your ads. Mornings, 7-7:30, has become my Facebook time. There are few investments that can match the yield of such a small amount of time. So, start today.  Put on some soft music and start building your own Facebook community with these seven helpful tips!

(Kirk Byron Jones may be reached at kjones58@aol.com, www.sayyestograce.com and“Say Yes to Grace” on Facebook.)
