Amazon Featured Book-of-the-Week: “The Other Side of Nam” by Ike Travis

War is hell is an understatement! Kenney knew something was wrong as his best friend tripped a wire. For a couple of seconds, they just stared at each other. It was as if his friend was saying good-by. Even though it was only seconds it lasted so long! Then came the explosion! His friend put his back against the mortar on the tree and took the entire load! Kenney flew back about 10 feet and thought he was dying as he was covered in so much blood and body parts. As it turned out, it was his friend who just saved his life! Kenney went into a state of shock and was flown out to a Field Hospital for observation. After one week he was sent back into combat! A letter from Mom stated that my Aunt was worried Kenney was losing his will to live! When I heard this, I knew that I had to get Kenney out of the fighting for a week to rest up and give him a reason to live again! To do this, I will need to make up Fake Orders as I have done before but nothing to this extreme!

Luckily for us, Dr. Virgie Broussard Pradia was kind enough to answer a few questions as the tour was getting started so that we can give you a sneak peek into the mind of the creator of Motivated by Dance: My Dream, Realized – A Memoir.

OP: Tell us a little bit about Motivated by Dance: My Dream, Realized – A Memoir. What is it about?

Dr. Virgie:  It is about having to struggle as a young girl in a small town in South Louisiana the third of eleven children. It tells about how I struggled with living in poverty with an abusive alcoholic father. But I found joy in dancing. It is about my having to work in the cotton and pepper fields to earn money to buy the bare necessities of life. When not working, the joy of dancing motivated me to dream big. I dreamed of going to New York and performing on stage. My mother told me to stop dreaming of going to New York because it was far away, and I would never get there. I kept right on dreaming. She told me to find a nice young man and get married. I went to New York and later became the dance director at Grambling State University

OP: Why did you decide to write this story?

Dr. Virgie: When I was in college, a priest said that I should write about my life, but I did not. I am not a writer; I am a dancer. Through the years many who knew part of my story encouraged me to write about my life. It took me many years to make the decision to pen it. I guess I was waiting for the right time.

OP: How did you get your book published?

Dr. Virgie: I wrote the story and a friend proofread it for me. Then I got an editor from Chicago to do the editing and decided to publish with Outskirts Press.

OP: What types of readers would be interested in this story?

Dr. Virgie: Readers who are trying to reach their dreams. My story can inspire them to not lose sight of their dreams. It is a good read for young adults and up.

OP: What is special about your book?

Dr. Virgie: I would say my struggle and not giving up even though my mother could not see my dreams. It reveals what a person could do when they believe in themselves.

OP: What differentiates it from other books in the same category?

Dr. Virgie: I would say the culture that I grew up in. My parents spoke Creole and neither had a formal education background. My mother was a stay-at-home mom for a long time. My dad was a carpenter who could not read. My mother went to night school and got a certificate that said she had an eight-grade education. My mom and dad fought a lot. Especially when he drank gin on the weekend. They would have physical fights and sometimes we had to call the policeman.

OP: Have you published any other books?

Dr. Virgie: Yes, three books of poems. Poetry the Way I Did It; My Love Your Love Poetry of Love; and Remarkable Man, Five Poems Celebrating Men.

OP: Do you plan to publish more?

Dr. Virgie: Yes, everyone who read this one asked when the next one is coming out. They said I kept them hanging. Some even called to ask question about my story and what happened after Grambling.

OP: Thanks for your time, Dr. Virgie! We look forward to learning more about you as you visit other bloggers!
