Self-Publishing Book Spotlight: 2ND EARTH by Edward and Eunice Vought

Self-publishing a book is an exciting undertaking. Because we understand the dedication that is required to write a quality book, we like to feature our top authors each week so that you can get to know a little bit more about them and their book. This week, we are featuring Edward and Eunice Vought’s 2ND EARTH.

In their latest book, self-publishing Outskirts Press authors, Edward and Eunice Vought, share a science fiction adventure about two Navy Seals that find themselves pioneering survivors in a world that is familiar on the surface, but totally different in reality, where they must use all their training and expertise to fend off everything this strange new world and Mother Nature throw at them.

Usually falling asleep on the subway brings a few minutes of pleasant rest, but when Jon Gorman and his buddy Tim, wake up from a little cat nap on the subway, they find themselves beginning a truly out-of-this world adventure.

After a long day, the rocking motion of the train lulls these two Navy Seals to sleep, but when the train comes to a stop, they wake to find their subway train abandoned in the middle of a dark tunnel somewhere deep under the streets of New York City. As they make their way to the surface, they find the streets are still there, the buildings are still there, even the cars are still there. There are just no people.

When they finally encounter a young girl running for her life from four scruffy punks, they begin to realize just how strange this post-apocalyptic reality is going to be.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Ed and Eunice wrote 2ND EARTH for their six children who are big science fiction fans. They have always been fascinated with the concept of parallel worlds and often speculated what it might be like to be among the only survivors of the near total destruction of the world as we know it.

They are currently working on a follow-up to 2ND EARTH along with continuing with their Best Friends series.

They reside in Marion, Ohio where their greatest joy is their two granddaughters.

West Side Story Cast Members Share What They’re Up to Now

It was the holiday season of 1961, and everyone was racing to the see the newest “picture show” called West Side Story, a story of love across boundaries. As a result, the “musical that grows younger” received rave reviews and won 10 Academy Awards (according to IMDB). It also grossed well over $40 million.

An Anonymous IMDB user sums up West Side Story in the following manner:

“West Side Story is the award winning adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. The feuding families become two warring New York City gangs- the white Jets led by Riff and the Puerto Rican Sharks, led by Bernardo. Their hatred escalates to a point where neither can coexist with any form of understanding. But when Riff’s best friend (and former Jet) Tony and Bernardo’s younger sister Maria meet at a dance, no one can do anything to stop their love. Maria and Tony begin meeting in secret, planning to run away. Then the Skarks and Jets plan a rumble under the highway – whoever wins gains control of the streets. Maria sends Tony to stop it, hoping it can end the violence. It goes terribly wrong, and before the lovers know what’s happened, tragedy strikes and doesn’t stop until the climactic and heartbreaking ending.”

Here’s the original trailer from the film:

Self-Publishing Book Spotlight: The Nightmare Before Jesus by Sonya S. Molina

Self publishing a book is an exciting undertaking. Because we understand the dedication that is required to write a quality book, we like to feature our top authors each week so that you can get to know a little bit more about them and their book. This week, we are featuring Sonya S. Molina’s The Nightmare Before Jesus.

In her latest book, self-publishing Outskirts Press author, Sonya S. Molina, shares a powerful story that lays bare her own early encounters with sexual predators in order not only to enlighten her readers about the growing epidemic of sexual abuse, but also to empower other sexual abuse survivors with the message that to be emotionally healed, they must first learn to forgive.

Author Molina candidly reveals how she had to bury her early emotional pain deep inside herself and how she tried as she grew up to “medicate” those feelings with both drugs and lovers. Frank and heartfelt, her memoir reveals the deep pain that ultimately led her to promiscuity, two abortions and depression.

Using her own story to exemplify the lives that have been lost to sexual abuse, the author tells of her inability to make the continuing ache in the pit of her stomach go away. Only when she found the tools necessary to say goodbye to her troubled past could she release the evil spirits that had dwelled inside her and allow forgiveness to take flight. Only then was she able to move from victim to survivor.

To help stop that cycle of abuse which passes from one generation to the next, Molina also explores the frustrating dynamics within our culture that make the acknowledgement and cessation of sexual abuse by loved ones so difficult.

Written for Christians and non-Christians alike, The Nightmare before Jesus shows that there is a medicine available to anyone which can help them deal with a troubled past. It is the simple, yet potent message of the Bible. It is the example of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit.

It is the act of forgiveness.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Sonya Molina is a prophet and an associate minister at Freewill Missionary Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, under the leadership of Senior Pastor Edward Nettles and First Lady Beverly Nettles. She is an intercessor and the leader of Women’s Ministries and Women’s Retreats. Sonya is the widow of the late Dr. Anthony L. Molina, Sr. She lives in Montgomery.

Self-Publishing Book Spotlight: He Kan’t Kill Your Future by Sharquent Webster

Self publishing a book is an exciting undertaking. Because we understand the dedication that is required to write a quality book, we like to feature our top authors each week so that you can get to know a little bit more about them and their book. This week, we are featuring Sharquent Webster’s He Kan’t Kill Your Future.

In her latest book, self-publishing Outskirts Press author, Sharquent Webster, shares a graphic and candid tale of the remarkable journey of a woman to hell and back on the streets of L.A. before her miraculous redemption by the Lord.

Before she was even old enough to drive, Sharquent had already experienced adulthood. She was secretly raised by child molesters and predators, living an underground life for many years. She had developed a drug addiction and become a thief. She learned at an early age to hustle, to snatch purses and to walk the streets at night, almost always high as a kite on weed, PCP or crack cocaine.

This is a frank, disturbing look at a world of street people so on the edge of life that all normal rules of survival and morality have long since been abandoned. Dodging the law, sleeping in “abandominiums,” doing whatever it takes to get their next high, these unfortunate souls lead a life that most people cannot even conceive of, even in their worst nightmares.

Sharquent’s honesty provides a frightening tale and one that should be read by at-risk youth, social service workers or anyone moving toward these rough roads, not only so they can see the dangers of being on that path, but also so they can learn that there is a way out, just as there was for Sharquent.

When the author finally stumbled on Victory Outreach, a women’s rehabilitation home and ministry, she learned that despite her past, Jesus still loved her and if she believed in herself enough, she could still have a future.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, Sharquent Webster is the seventh of ten children. An abused runaway, she lived a life of pain and struggle before finding hope and security in God. She is married with three children.

Self-Publishing Book Spotlight: 21st Century Great Global Depression by Orest Andrew Harrison

Self publishing a book is an exciting undertaking. Because we understand the dedication that is required to write a quality book, we like to feature our top authors each week so that you can get to know a little bit more about them and their book. This week, we are featuring Orest Andrew Harrison’s Command Influence.

In his latest book, self-publishing Outskirts Press author, Orest Andrew Harrison, provides readers with a common sense narrative on how the American economy got where it is today and how investors now need an iconoclastic and out-of-the box investment strategy to successfully sail against the turbulent headwinds facing the U.S. and the global economy for the foreseeable future.

In a time of great economic upheaval and turbulence, Americans are faced with the prospects of managing the various challenges that befall all of us: an ever-exploding debt ceiling, trade deficits in free fall, a looming bond market correction, further bank insolvencies, currency devaluation, the threat of a doomsday derivatives debacle, affects from a retiring baby boom generation as well as a real estate market which is unable to find a bottom.  The book offers an analysis on what lies ahead, as well as advice on how to traverse the dangerous financial landscape facing Americans for the next few decades.

The American Dream is not yet dead, says Harrison, even if it is currently in ICU.  Nonetheless, Harrison believes the innate spirit, resolve and courage displayed by Americans through previous crises — if coupled with true bipartisan reform as well as a willingness to hunker down as the shocks to the system play out – will triumph in the end.

Meanwhile the insights, tips and tactics offered in 21st Century Great Global Depression serve as both a warning and a wake-up call to today’s politicians and highlight the dire need for a fiscal and political reform broader than anything either the Democrats or Republicans have been able to accomplish thus far.  A patriot at heart, Harrison calls upon Americans from both sides of the ideological divide to unite in their effort to forge common sense solutions for our economy before it is too late.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

The author, Orest Andrew Harrison, a graduate of Rutgers University, was a real-estate investor on the forefront of the property investment market. Caught on the front lines of a historic real estate depression and witnessing the outright collapse of entire asset classes, his forward thinking decision to divest all of his property holdings prior to today’s real estate quagmire proved accurate. It also formulated his belief in the need for a non-traditional, diversified investment strategy in our volatile and uncertain world.

He is also the creator of SurviveandThriveNow.com, which provides a monthly financial newsletter, “The Common Sense Market “, that helps subscribers prepare for economic contingencies, make informed decisions regarding their finances, preserve capital and raise their quality of life.

He has also co-written five full-length musicals including “The People’s Princess” a bio-musical about the life and story of Princess Diana. Today, he runs a private, not-for- profit foundation, The Paradise Fund-Children’s Relief Foundation, to which he donates all profits from CD sales from the Diana musical.

Self-Publishing Book Spotlight: Once in a Lifetime Dog by Chantelle Hildreth

Self publishing a book is an exciting undertaking. Because we understand the dedication that is required to write a quality book, we like to feature our top authors each week so that you can get to know a little bit more about them and their book. This week, we are featuring Chantelle Hildreth’s Once in a Lifetime Dog.

In her latest book, self-publishing Outskirts Press author, Chantelle Hildreth, found her world collapsing when the US economy plunged. Laid off from her job as a professor of art history, Hildreth was at a crossroads. As a wife and mother, Hildreth struggled with the path to take. She rejected the familiarity of the teaching profession that she had known for more than a decade. Instead, she chose a more daunting task. She followed a dream and in doing so, forever changed the lives of her family.

Unemployed, Hildreth convinced her husband to leave his quarter of a million dollar a year job and the affluent, urban lifestyle they enjoyed in Los Angeles behind. She moved her family to a pristine, rural island off the coast of Washington State in the San Juan Islands archipelago and truly started over. Today, instead of securing her children behind locked gates to play, nature is at their backdoor. And it all started when she found the courage to change her world, to transform from the shy woman she once was and embrace a whole new lifestyle.

Born out of love, the love she had for, Boris, Borisangel, her Russian Wolfhound, Hildreth found the strength and inspiration to truly reinvent her life and the lives of her family. Hildreth is available to talk about the meaning of being a mother and a working woman and how following a dream and taking that risk can produce remarkable results.

Hildreth’s new memoir is the story of an unconditional love and of the overwhelming heartache of loss, but it is also a tale of admiration for the uncanny ability of a special animal to teach an owner profound life lessons.

A massive, elegant white beast with more personality, grace and charm than most people, Boris was a rare being and steady companion. He was the river that flowed through many chapters of Chantelle’s life: her study partner and confidence builder through law school, the inspiration for the purchase of her first home, a touchstone (and judge) for new relationships and an infallible source of comfort and strength throughout her pregnancy.

Once in a Lifetime Dog is the touching and humorous story about the deep connection between an extraordinary dog and his owner. Chantelle battles rats, adopts a fashion statement that incorporates dog hair and bases her life’s decision making in devotion to her special dog. It is the story of how Boris stood by the one he loved so that in the end, when he left her, she would be able to stand alone.

It is a story that will rekindle both the joy and the heartache that any reader has experienced because of that one special pet they have had. Be prepared to laugh and cry.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Chantelle Hildreth lives in the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington with her husband, their two children and their three borzois, Chagall, Angelica and Searraes.

The forested coastal beauty of the Pacific Northwest at her doorstep and her three dogs at her side provide her with the ideal backdrop and inspiration for her writing.

Prior to becoming a writer, Chantelle was an attorney and professor of art history at several California colleges.

Self-Publishing Book Spotlight: Command Influence by Robert A. Shaines

Self publishing a book is an exciting undertaking. Because we understand the dedication that is required to write a quality book, we like to feature our top authors each week so that you can get to know a little bit more about them and their book. This week, we are featuring Robert A. Shaines’s Command Influence.

In his latest book, self-publishing Outskirts Press author, Robert A. Shaines, gives readers a fascinating peek into a less than honorable moment in American history. He shows not only the wholesale problems that permeated the military justice system at that time, but also the lack of preparedness of America to engage in the Korean War, both in terms of our foreign policy and our military’s lack of equipment and training..

Command Influence offers historians, teachers and veterans a unique perspective on the Korean War and international events at the time, but it is also a moving chronicle for any reader of the tribulations of one George C. Schreiber, a second lieutenant in charge of an Air Police guard unit in Pusan, Korea, in 1952.

Formerly a fifth and sixth grade teacher in the community of Brookfield, Illinois, Schreiber suddenly found himself in Korea convicted by a general court-martial of premeditated murder. Schreiber and two of his contemporaries had become pawns in a power game among ambitious and vindictive men who were eager only to advance their own military careers.

Author Shaines was a twenty-three year old Air Force lawyer at the time who was able to observe first hand the unconscionable injustice that occurred and that would eventually gain the attention of the Air Force Chief of Staff, The Governor of Illinois, The President of the United States, the United States Supreme Court and various Senators and Congressmen.

Shaines’ own conscience prompted him to explore and capture the remarkable events of this story in Command Influence and as he did so, he came to understand that both he and Schreiber were two naïve and trusting young fellow officers whose lives and character became permanently shaped by the injustice of the time.

It is a remarkable story of these two men who, in their own ways, both became unwitting victims of the greater forces around them.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Robert A. Shaines is a practicing attorney in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal in 2010 by the President of the Republic of Korea. His next book is a work of fiction based on his experiences working for the Defense Nuclear Agency in the former Soviet Union from 1992 to 1996.

Self-Publishing Book Spotlight: Once More Into the Breach by Mark Brian Swart

Self publishing a book is an exciting undertaking. Because we understand the dedication that is required to write a quality book, we like to feature our top authors each week so that you can get to know a little bit more about them and their book. This week, we are featuring Mark Brian Swart’s Once More Into the Breach.

In his latest book, self-publishing Outskirts Press author, Mark Brian Swart, shows that he knows that reenacting is not just what you see on TV. It’s a reality all its own: a combination of high emotions, glowing triumphs, tremendous satisfaction, robust humor, always unbeatable camaraderie, and occasionally even a heartache or two. Most reenactors are superb historians, good friends, and excellent “Pards” – even though every once in a while there’s a moron or a bonehead in the crowd.

Just like real life.

Once More Into The Breach lays out – with no strings pulled – the Full Monty of Civil War reenacting so that the reader can find out the actual real-life story behind today’s reenacting of the War of the Rebellion. Becoming a Civil War reenactor begins with a little money, a love for history and a calling to preserve it, and finding a club that will take a “Fresh Fish” into its fold. After that, those that do all the “right stuff” are very successful and have one helluva great time. Those that do the “wrong stuff” get awfully lonely out there.

Once More Into The Breach takes the reader through the whole chronicle of how Civil War reenactors keep history alive, how they learn and teach the lessons of the past (and why!), how they have so much fun with some of the finest folks in the world, and the cherished memories that they acquire in the pursuit of preserving one of the most incredible events in American History.

And it’s a whole lot better than what you sometimes get out there in the other “real life.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Mark Brian Swart has always enjoyed history. He discovered reenacting back in 1998 when he began to explore “Living History” as a Civil War soldier. He began keeping a diary in his second year of reenacting and his thoughtful, amusing and candid comments were the catalyst for ONCE MORE INTO THE BREACH. Mark has realized that too little is known about Civil War reenacting, or about those who give so much and work so hard at it – both to Preserve History and to Honor the Brave Americans who gave their lives during its Creation. His book has been written to fill that gap.
