Habits, once formed, never go away. They are the outcome of old decisions, and they can be changed, but only through new decisions and choices. Habits aren’t necessarily bad; they make our lives easier and more predictable by removing the necessity of thinking about every detail of our daily existence. They let us execute our actions efficiently, freeing up our prefrontal cortex to express itself creatively and intellectually.
But sometimes bad habits can creep in and good habits can be so very difficult to cultivate. As we start out a new year with fresh resolutions, it seems the appropriate time to get advice on keeping those resolutions by forming healthy and productive habits.
Enter self-published Outskirts Press author Dr. Sylvie Heyman.
Although initially Dr. Heyman specialized in weight management and life style changes, she has expanded her area of expertise to other habits that affect body, mind and spirit. Here, she offers other writers and self-publishing authors like herself advice on how to stay on track in the new year. This information and much more is available in her book, Make It a HABIT!
How do habits form? A habit cue or trigger could be a specific time of day, a location, other people, emotions or other things that lead to a predictable response, or reward. With repetition, our responses to triggers become automatic and a habit is born. Motivation may get us started, but habit keeps us going.
If your resolution in the new year is to get published, Dr. Sylvie can help with these seven tips for identifying habits that might be holding you back, or establishing new ones that will move you forward:
Be aware and mindful. We can’t change what we don’t acknowledge, right? Observe your habits, good and bad — write them down if that helps. Be honest with yourself about your habits, good and bad.
Assess yourself. Ask yourself which habit you want to change or acquire first and why you want it. Think about how the habit you wish to change (or the one you wish to acquire) affects or will affect you and others.
Be accountable. Share your habit change with someone. This makes you accountable for that change until you can ingrain new habits or break bad ones. Confide in another writer, a spouse, coworker or another reliable and honest confident.
Make small changes, one at a time. Concentrate on establishing small habits until they become second nature, then move onto the next small change. If your habit is to get distracted when you’re supposed to be writing, first change the habit of turning on the TV or radio. Once you’ve broken that habit, move on to, say, writing for just 10 minutes straight to get the feel for focusing.
Test your willpower — but not too much! When willpower is applied in small increments at a time, when you are energetic and ready to take on a little challenge, willpower becomes stronger. Practice willpower in small steps until it becomes a habit — until it’s automatic.
Trick your triggers. Practice breaking the associations between bad habits and their triggers. The aforementioned habit of letting media distract you is a good example. Break the association between writing and watching TV by moving to a different room or chair during your writing session.
Give it time. There are many theories about how long it takes to form or break a habit, ranging from a few weeks to years! Use 30 days as a guidepost, but know that some deeply ingrained habits will take much longer to break, and new habits without awareness, accountability and practice will take some time to take hold.

With the abundance of self-published authors, you have to come up with creative ways to market a self-published book. While book tours are a great way to connect with your readers, they aren’t the most affordable method of promotion. However, technology has made it possible for an alternative.
Take note from self-publishing Outskirts Press author, Nate Dinet, who is taking his latest book, Conquer Life, on tour – a virtual book tour, that is. He will be featured on several blogs over the weeks and months ahead so keep your eyes peeled to learn more about him and his book.
Luckily for us, Nate was kind enough to answer a few questions as the tour was getting started so that we can give you a sneak peek into the mind of the creator of Conquer Life.
OP: Tell us a little bit about Conquer Life. What is it about?
Nate: Conquer Life is a guide designed to get the reader from whatever their current situation is in life, to their desired state. Meaning, this book gives insight on how to manage your life to achieve your dreams and goals. I put you in the driver’s seat and take the ambiguity out of getting things done so the only real question is, how bad do you want it? If you want to achieve your dream, this book will give you the tools to start your journey towards the desired state of life.
OP: Why did you decide to write this story?
Nate: I absolutely believe that everyone in the world can do anything they want to, if they want it bad enough. But I also know a lot of people (like me) struggle to get traction on working towards their dreams or goals. A lot of people I coach spend time spinning their wheels and don’t know how to start or can’t gain momentum because they succumb to self-criticism or are simply blocked by from the outside world: work, school or otherwise. I wanted to give people a “how-to” for achieving their dreams, with no strings attached. Thusly, if you want it bad enough but don’t know how to get from point A to point B thru Z, Conquer Life can help.
OP: How did you get your book published?
Nate: I used an awesome company called: Outskirts Press! They are a great self-publishing option for new authors. Everything is very streamlined, and the process is fantastic.
OP: What types of readers would be interested in this story?
Nate: Although I definitely have a very candid and unique voice throughout the book, I think it can appeal to most everyone. But who I hope picks up the book is anyone who finds themselves in a weird “transition” point in their life. For those who are just out of college, but their first job isn’t anything close to what they thought it would be, or for those who know they are missing something in their life but don’t know what that something is exactly, I hope they find Conquer Life – or maybe Conquer Life finds them. Could be like a Jumanji situation where it seeks out readers. Though, I wouldn’t want any of those negative impacts that comes with that autonomous board game.
OP: What is special about your book?
Nate: My book is just enough information, just in time. You won’t find theoretical debates on the human condition in it. I designed the book to be a quick guide so that the reader can absorb what they need to so they can start enacting change in their life, right away. My book is also full of my unique sense of humor so hopefully I can get a couple laughs but more importantly my humor is there, so the reader knows I’m with them the entire way. I want readers to know that I will be their coach, I’m not some get rich quick guy spewing nonsense their direction. I love helping people, plain and simple and I think that theme is evident throughout the book.
OP: What differentiates it from other books in the same category?
Nate: Conquer Life takes proven methodologies that many of the most successful companies use to create new products and stay competitive in their market place and applies it on the micro scale for the individual. There are so many self-help books out there, but Conquer Life leverages the same foundational elements that make companies like Google, Microsoft, and John Deere (just to name a few) incredibly efficient. My book gives the reader what they need to operate in the most efficient way to achieve their dreams.
OP: Have you published any other books?
Nate: This is my first published work!
OP: Do you plan to publish more?
Nate: I am currently working on two separate books at the moment, a pseudo sequel to Conquer Life and a thriller novel. I’m targeting to get the first draft of each of the books complete by the end of 2018.
OP: Thanks for your time, Nate! We look forward to learning more about you as you visit other bloggers!

About the Author:
Debra Ann Healey spent many years as a school teacher witnessing the challenge and struggle many children face as society fills their lives with expectations while she believes that their souls quite often have another calling. My own life experiences as one of those children, my spiritual journey, love of nature and photography as well as a deep connection with the children and the child in us all, has led her here to teach a different way of educating and preparing children for the true journey of life.
After losing her father at a young age, a deep yearning for connection with him led Debra Ann to discover his presence around her. At first, it was small touches like a gentle breeze across her face but she became more open and receptive to these experiences throughout life, she came to know that Heaven is not so far away and that our loved ones who have left this world are still very close by wanting to communicate with us. Debra Ann uses her spiritual connection and knowledge to bring her three books to life and inspire others to find their true self.
An Unclouded Day: My Personal Journey Home
Written under the name of her spirit name, Holly James, this book is the amazing and unforgettable story of a period in Debra Ann’s life where she releases all of the wrongs this world had taught her and waking up to remembering who she really is. It is a true account of the divine guidance that was given to her along the way and the beautiful messages shared. The book follows Debra Ann’s journey as she lost everything that once identified her including her career, marriage, physical abilities, home, finances and many loved ones, but through these losses, she learns to let go and forgive.
The book details her journey of blessings, of miracles, of the divine love, which surrounds us all right here, right now longing to lead us home.
There Is a Rainbow Inside of Me: Chakra Balancing for Children of All Ages
During her own healing process, Debra Ann was inspired to create this book, as she discovered the amazing benefits of chakra clearing for herself. Through the benefits of chakra clearing, she pondered why she had not learn this earlier in life and decided to share this gift with from the very beginnings of their development as not only human beings but as individual spirits and souls having a human experience.
The book is designed to encourage and teach young children from an early age the importance of caring for the body, mind and soul through an early introduction to chakra balancing. Debra Ann believes that being given such knowledge and guidance from an early onset greatly benefits both children and society as a whole.
Heaven’s Not So Far Away: Finding Peace In The Loss Of A Loved One
Death is not an ending but the beginning of a new form of relationship, for life is eternal and no living thing ever truly dies, it changes form. This book signifies the revelation of a truth and understanding about death that the author came to know and experience, after losing her own father at a young age as well as many other loved ones throughout her life. Although people may leave this world in their physical form, no one or no one thing ever really dies, they simply change form and their energy lives eternally. When this is understood, the realization that a new relationship and form of communication is available between us can begin to unfold, if we allow it.
