Top 5 Benefits of a Virtual Book Tour

Book marketing has changed due to the restrictions of the coronavirus pandemic. However, thanks to modern technology, you can take your book on tour without ever leaving your home. Take your book on the virtual road and connect with bloggers and readers all over the globe with the Virtual Book Tour Launch.

Being able to market your book efficiently while following social distancing guidelines is just one of the benefits of a virtual book tour. Following are five additional benefits:

    1. It’s faster, less expensive, and more convenient to “tour” from in front of your computer than from town to town in your car.  (That’s 3 benefits right there, and there are still 4 more to go!)
    2. It’s an opportunity to engage with readers.  Your appearance on blogs may generate reader comments, which you are encouraged to respond to.
    3. More book sales and book reviews. The whole point of going on a virtual book tour is to generate book sales, but you may discover an added benefit- the resulting book reviews, which will, in turn, become MORE book sales, and so on and so forth.
    4. Virtual Book Tours last “forever.”  On a “real” book tour, it’s over the minute you get home.  But a virtual book tour is archived and searchable online forever, available for search engines (and your readers) to discover days, months, or even years later.  And due to the power of POD and distribution-on-demand, your book will still be available for sale when those orders come in.
    5. Word of mouth.  While the initial “tour” may be a whirlwind, you may discover an additional benefit due to word-of-mouth.  Bloggers know each other, which can turn into more “appearances” down the road; and readers know each other (just ask members of GoodReads), which may turn into additional sales and reviews down the road, even if those secondary readers didn’t see you “on tour.”

Speaking of road, it used to be a long, hard road to put together a Virtual Book Tour on your own.  But Outskirts Press makes it easy with our Virtual Book Tour Launch…and for a limited time, you can save 10% on this valuable marketing opportunity!

Self-Publishing Author Marc McCormack Discusses Stella the Rejected Star

Author Marc McCormack is taking his latest book Stella the Rejected Star on tour — a Virtual Book Tour, that is, with Outskirts Press! Technology has created a wide variety of ways to reach audiences all over the world. All it takes is a little thinking outside the box, and nowadays you can market a self-published book in a variety of affordable and impactful ways. Virtual book tours, for example, are a great way to connect with readers from all corners of the globe, all from the comfort of your own home. Join Marc McCormack and Stella the Rejected Star as they appear in features and interviews (such as the one below) in the weeks and months ahead!

Luckily for us, Marc was kind enough to answer a few questions as the tour was getting started so that we can give you a sneak peek into the mind of the creator of Stella the Rejected Star.

OP: Tell us a little bit about Stella the Rejected Star. What is it about?

Marc: It’s a Christmas story about Stella, a four-pointed star, that is rejected by the other five-pointed stars because she is different and the brightest. The other stars are unkind to Stella and even “starnap” her at one point. Ultimately, she is selected by God to lead the wisemen to the manger on Christmas.

OP: Why did you decide to write this story?

Marc: I wrote Stella the Rejected Star when I was 11 in 1983. About five years ago, my Mom found a copy of the book in the garage and asked me to reread it. I read it again, and I realized 37 years ago I had written the story of my son, Brady, who is now a beautiful blind and nonverbal 14-year-old individual with autism. I took the story to one of my close friends, and he illustrated it. Brady was the inspiration to publish it.

OP: How did you get your book published?

Marc: I contacted Outskirts publishers and went through the self-publishing process. I decided that the year 2020 was the perfect year for Stella’s debut! This is a story of hope in a world in need of it.

OP: What types of readers would be interested in this story?

Marc: Kids who love stars, even mischievous ones, and Christmas will love this book, and all Individuals with special needs are represented by Stella. The book is set against the backdrop of the first Christmas and Nativity, but it is truly meant for everyone.

OP: What is special about your book?

Marc: This book is special because it is not only a cute story, but it is the perfect way to teach your children about the importance of kindness. Children will see that Stella was made fun of for her differences, and you can easily teach your children about love and acceptance. The ones among us who are considered different often shine the brightest! I am also planning on donating some of the proceeds to local (Orange County, CA) autism charities.

OP: What differentiates it from other books in the same category?

Marc: It’s a Christmas story about the first Nativity, but it is more than that because of its message of acceptance and inclusion.

OP: Have you published any other books?

Marc: This is my first published book.

OP: Do you plan to publish more?

Marc: Yes, I do. I’m currently working on writing the story of my son, Brady (and his brother Carson who we lost), from his four months in the NICU and his current triumphs as a beautiful 14-year-old with severe special needs.

OP: Thanks for your time, Marc! We look forward to learning more about you as you visit other bloggers!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

I wrote Stella the Rejected Star when I was a wide-eyed, 11-year-old. Thirty-seven years later, the story is even more relevant personally when I consider my 13-year-old beautiful son, Brady, who was born at 24 weeks at one pound, six ounces. Brady was a twin, and tragically his brother, Carson, passed away after two weeks. Now, Brady is a blind, nonverbal boy with autism who has sometimes been rejected for his differences; however, he radiates love and light every day in my life and so many others. I want to express my sincere gratitude to a close friend and brilliant artist, Seth Thompson, who helped bring Stella to life through his perfect illustrations. Stella the Rejected Star is for Brady and all individuals with special needs who illuminate the world when, like Stella, they are given the opportunity to shine. With love, Marc McCormack

The Winds of Malibu: An Unexplainable Memoir by Jeff Lucas

Technology has created a wide variety of ways to reach audiences all over the world. It takes is a little thinking outside the box and you can market a self-published book in creative, affordable and impactful ways. Consider book tours! Tours are a great way to connect with your readers and technology has made them easier and more cost effective than ever!

Author Jeff Lucas is taking his latest book The Winds of Malibu: An Unexplainable Memoir, on tour — a Virtual Book Tour with Outskirts Press. This will allow Jeff to take his book into the far corners of the globe, all from the comfort of his own home! Keep an eye out for Jeff’s book as he will be featured on several blogs over the weeks and months ahead!

Luckily for us, Jeff was kind enough to answer a few questions as the tour was getting started so that we can give you a sneak peek into the mind of the creator of The Winds of Malibu: An Unexplainable Memoir.

OP: Tell us a little bit about The Winds of Malibu: An Unexplainable Memoir. What is it about?

Jeff: The Winds of Malibu focuses on my teenage years in the 1970s in Malibu. In the 1970s there were outrageous movies being made in abundance, and under the circumstances, I turned the style and the feeling of this book into an outrageous 1970s film because that is how it felt to live there growing up. Everything was on the edge for no real reason at all other than all the personalities involved.

OP: Why did you decide to write this story?

Jeff: The Winds of Malibu was automatic writing on one hand and on the other hand it took decades to complete. I knew I had to finish and publish this eventually. It hung on me for over thirty years. I am grateful that I lived long enough to finish it and publish it. The main challenge was I did not want to face that time that closely, and yet I had to.

OP: What types of readers would be interested in this story?

Jeff: People who like to read the realist writers should be interested in my book. Those interested in Louis Ferdinand Celine, John Fante, and Arthur Rimbaud. In other words, the writers who lived it in order to say it. The Winds of Malibu is really an excellent addition, I think, to learning about the feel of life in the 1970s among youth.

OP: What is special about your book?

Jeff: For a childhood memoir I have more genuine diary entries perhaps than any other childhood memoir. I have asked the Guinness Book Of World records to check on that.

OP: What differentiates it from other books in the same category?

Jeff: Like This Boy’s Life and Running With Scissors? I have got better subject matter.

OP: Have you published any other books? Do you plan to publish more?

Jeff: This might be my To Kill A Mockingbird. No other area of my life had the same intensity. I have got some ideas that I have thought about. There was my first four years in Malibu before I was eleven. After 1984 though, I lived a Blue-Collar life and Charles Bukowski already did a better job of writing about that than I could. I have got a screenplay I sketched out in the 1980s about my Blue-Collar world at the ice company. Maybe I will finish it.

OP: How can someone learn more about your book or purchase it?

Jeff: The Winds of Malibu is available at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and Outskirts Press.

OP: Thanks for your time, Jeff! We look forward to learning more about you as you visit other bloggers!
