Our Top Picks for Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month!

Much has been said and written about Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the decades since it was first codified in medical literature, but one thing remains true: the people with the most to say about it are often the ones with the fewest resources, the least support, and the most to lose. That is, those who are themselves on the Autism spectrum or who live with someone else who is. One of the finer aspects of self-publishing is that this industry has a special relationship with the ASD community and is able to provide a platform for those all-important voices to be heard, as well as amplify their stories.

Here at Outskirts Press, we would like to celebrate our thriving community of authors, many of whom are members of the larger ASD community or otherwise neurodivergent! This month, the month of April, is widely known as Autism Awareness Month by those affiliated with the ASD community, and is increasingly coming to be known as Autism Acceptance Month by those who place on the Autism spectrum themselves. Both aspects–that is, awareness about ASD and its potential presentations, as well as acceptance of those on the Autism spectrum–are incredibly important, as is the work done by self-publishing authors dedicated to them. This is one of many reasons we’re excited to shine some light on those of our authors who are writing on this subject!

For a treatment-centered approach, consider prolific Soma Mukhopadhyay’s Understanding Autism through Rapid Prompting Method and all the other fascinating and helpful books in her series. They all center on the rapid-prompting method (RPM) mentioned in this book’s title, with the particular goal of improving academic success and communication for persons with ASD or similar disorders. The whole series is published by Outskirts Press and each one is available for purchase through the Helping Autism Through Learning and Outreach (HALO) website, which also offers a number of additional ASD-related resources, or from her webpages or from Amazon, of course.

Meet Mansah Gaisie Barnes’ fantastic book for readers of all ages, Yooku My Brother / The Enigma: Autism. Barnes puts her Master of Science degree in special education with a concentration in Autism to work in this special look at the effects of ASD on the individual as well as the joy that results from learning to understand those on the Autism spectrum. This book uses a fictional protagonist to guide readers through the experience, and backs up its conclusions with accessible research phrased in language we can all understand.

Author John Dukes is changing lives. His son, John Jr., passed away in 2016 after living with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In his latest book, Dadders, Can I Pet the Whales?, Dukes takes readers on an emotional journey through the story of his family and the story of his son, whose take on life and the world is both powerful and life-changing. We interviewed Dukes as his book began to receive public recognition.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) roughly 1 in 68 children has been identified with some form of ASD, and these are only the children whose placement on the Autism spectrum requires some form of treatment, educational assistance, or special care. The real numbers, which would include children who are considered “high-functioning” and who face fewer obstacles to self-determined success, are likely much higher. As activist and parent Kim Stagliano writes, those within the ASD community “need advocates committed not only to getting them the acceptance they deserve, but also the critical help they require to survive, in the form of social programs, education, safety and employment opportunities.” In short, they need action. Learning more about ASD and taking tangible action to help support those who live with ASD, research it, or are working to ameliorate the challenges it poses to those who have it, is paramount.

If you’re interested in learning more about Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in general, we highly recommend you check out our Pinterest page of ASD-related books published by Outskirts Press. Sometimes, buying a book can help change lives. These are some of those books!

WILDER: A Social Justice Phantasy

by Bob Bogner

(4.5 Stars – 3 Customer Reviews)

Price: $11.95

Bob Bogner’s “WILDER: A Social Justice Phantasy” is a life-changing mental experiment. It explains in a logical, easy-to-read manner a concept of social justice that is based on personal responsibility (Sartre), rationality (Kant), and fairness (Rawls). The experiment brings their theories together in a clear powerful way. The setting for the experiment is inside a mother’s womb; The characters are fetuses who do not know what their inborn traits are, or what type of society they will be born into. From this “original position,” a rational theory of social and political justice is developed, which hopefully will contribute to a better, fairer world.

Technology has created a wide variety of ways to reach audiences all over the world. It takes is a little thinking outside the box and you can market a self-published book in creative, affordable and impactful ways. Consider book tours! Tours are a great way to connect with your readers and technology has made them easier and more cost effective than ever!

Author Duke Saganich is taking his latest book In Search of the Body & Soul Connection, on tour — a Virtual Book Tour with Outskirts Press. This will allow Duke to take his book into the far corners of the globe, all from the comfort of his own home! Keep an eye out for Duke’s book as he will be featured on several blogs over the weeks and months ahead!

Luckily for us, Duke was kind enough to answer a few questions as the tour was getting started so that we can give you a sneak peek into the mind of the creator of In Search of the Body & Soul Connection.

OP: Tell us a little bit about In Search of the Body & Soul Connection. What is it about?

Duke: This book is a thought-provoking analysis for all of the spiritual seekers looking for answers. It’s for those who are open to all the possibilities of what could be. My research into spirituality and religion has led me to find common ground between them. The premise of this book is based on my interpretation and understanding of the three main aspects of spirituality; the “Body”, the “Soul” and the “Link” which connects them.

OP: Why did you decide to write this story?

Duke: I wrote this book to share with others my research, knowledge and interpretation on spirituality. I am legally blind and writing this book has been very therapeutic for me and has contributed to my own spiritual growth.

OP: How did you get your book published?

Duke: Researching many self-publishing companies I found that Outskirts Press stood out among the others. I chose them for their professionalism, experience and available options.

OP: What types of readers would be interested in this story?

Duke: It’s for anyone who is on a spiritual journey and looking for possible answers and growth.

OP: What is special about your book?

Duke: As a researcher for many years, I wanted to give my interpretation and understanding of the common ground between spirituality and religion. I also explain many simple techniques and exercises that anyone can use to help them grow spiritually.

OP: What differentiates it from other books in the same category?

Duke: I wanted to create a resource for those seeking spiritual enlightenment. In this genre there aren’t many books that incorporate full color images and quotes that relate to each chapter.

OP: Have you published any other books?

Duke: This is my first book.

OP: Do you plan to publish more?

Duke: Possibly, but I have not made any decision as yet.

OP: Thanks for your time, Duke! We look forward to learning more about you as you visit other bloggers!

BOOK EXCERPT

Part Two “The Soul”:

Chapter 5 “The Bridge of Consciousness” will show the bridges that are formed through the consciousness communication network. I will also discuss death as the transitional period between lives. During this period you reconnect with your soul and make choices for your next life experience. These choices will depend mostly on the level that your soul has evolved. There will be many other choices available to your soul when it has come to the end of its reincarnation cycles. The soul is continually evolving and has choices which include becoming Guides, or Teachers. Evolved souls can also choose to start a new reincarnation cycle to continue the experience of physical life and help other souls in their evolutionary process.

Independent Bookstore Day Moves to Aug. 29

We are so happy to announce that at least one of the many complications to your life posed by COVID-19, involving one of the most important events on the calendar for self-publishing authors, has at last been solved. Independent Bookstore Day, which had to delay due to restrictions and the inability of many vendors and presenters to travel during the international shutdown, will now take place on August 29th of this year.

The last few weeks have given event planners time to learn and organize within a new format, and as a result they will be carrying out a big social media “push” in the lead-up to the event’s original date of April 25th, so make sure to take part online if you’re able! The American Booksellers Association notes that “booksellers are invited to celebrate virtually during the week of April 19–25 using the hashtag #VirtualBookstoreParty,” and they offer a number of other suggestions for authors and booksellers alike to take advantage of both now and in August.

Until then, we look forward to interacting with you online!

War of Dreams by Anton Venter

Technology has created a wide variety of ways to reach audiences all over the world. It takes is a little thinking outside the box and you can market a self-published book in creative, affordable and impactful ways. Consider book tours! Tours are a great way to connect with your readers and technology has made them easier and more cost effective than ever!

Author Anton Venter is taking his latest book War of Dreams, on tour — a Virtual Book Tour with Outskirts Press. This will allow Anton to take his book into the far corners of the globe, all from the comfort of his own home! Keep an eye out for Anton’s book as he will be featured on several blogs over the weeks and months ahead!

Luckily for us, Anton was kind enough to answer a few questions as the tour was getting started so that we can give you a sneak peek into the mind of the creator of War of Dreams.

OP: Tell us a little bit about War of Dreams. What is it about?

Anton: The book tells the story of a German teenager who rapidly comes of age during the Second World War. Alexander’s involuntary participation in the War is interwoven with settings, plots and real characters (including Nazi officials) that are described in many historical WW2 books.

OP: Why did you decide to write this story?

Anton: More has been written about the Nazi regime than about ordinary Germans and how the Second World War affected their lives. Many of their stories will never be told. Although fiction, Alexander’s story is told as he rapidly grows into adulthood and becomes an involuntary cog in the wheels of the Nazi machine.

OP: How did you get your book published?

Anton: I self-published with Outskirts Press.

OP: What types of readers would be interested in this story?

Anton: Readers who are interested in the Second World War, especially the Nazi regime. Readers who are interested in how events such as a world war influence the development of a teenager into a young man and how he has to deal with the traumatic effects of a war on himself and his family. Readers who find dreams interesting and look at ways of interpreting them.

OP: What is special about your book?

Anton: The main character, albeit mostly in the background, features in World War Two plots and settings that were real and based on thorough research. The character’s development and early adult life follow a timeline that is accurately aligned with that of the Second World War.

OP: What differentiates it from other books in the same category?

Anton: I had much inspiration from dreams. I recorded my dreams over a period of fifteen years. Many of them were about a character in the context of a world war and I enjoyed weaving these dreams into factual WW2 settings and scenarios.

OP: Have you published any other books?

Anton: No, I currently do not.

OP: Do you plan to publish more?

Anton: I plan to publish a follow-up in which the same character will feature. The setting will be the Cold War that followed the Second World War. Again, it will be inspired by dreams that I have continued recording since publishing War of Dreams.

OP: Thanks for your time, Anton! We look forward to learning more about you as you visit other bloggers!

The Attitude Influence by LeAnn Shaw

Technology has created a wide variety of ways to reach audiences all over the world. It takes is a little thinking outside the box and you can market a self-published book in creative, affordable and impactful ways. Consider book tours! Tours are a great way to connect with your readers and technology has made them easier and more cost effective than ever!

Author LeAnn Shaw is taking her latest book The Attitude Influence: Creating a positive life by taking accountability, building connections, and discovering how attitude influences everything, on tour — a Virtual Book Tour with Outskirts Press. This will allow LeAnn to take her book into the far corners of the globe, all from the comfort of her own home! Keep an eye out for LeAnn Shaw’s book as she will be featured on several blogs over the weeks and months ahead!

Luckily for us, LeAnn was kind enough to answer a few questions as the tour was getting started so that we can give you a sneak peek into the mind of the creator of The Attitude Influence.

OP: Tell us a little bit about The Attitude Influence. What is it about?

LeAnn: My book is about discovering the influence of attitude and making a positive difference. It takes a holistic approach to attitude management that allows the reader to gain self-awareness, identify attitude types, develop methods for creating a positive mindset, and learning to positively influence their environments.

OP: Why did you decide to write this story?

LeAnn: After observing the increasing negativity and polarization in the world, I wrote this book for two important reasons. First, I wanted to start a conversation that I think is greatly needed. I also wanted to make a positive difference in peoples’ lives so they are satisfied when they answer the question, “How will I be remembered?”

OP: How did you get your book published?

LeAnn: I researched several self-publishing companies and ultimately decided to partner with Outskirts Press.

OP: What types of readers would be interested in this story?

LeAnn: I started the book with organizational leaders in mind – the types of leaders who want to create happy, successful work environments. As I began the writing process, I knew the audience would be broader. Anyone who wants a more positive life, to live and work in environments that thrive, and make the most of their time on earth will be interested in The Attitude Influence.

OP: What is special about your book?

LeAnn: In my book, I do not hold back about my imperfections or the imperfections of my husband (who happens to be my favorite person). I wanted to paint a picture for the reader that was real and authentic. If I were perfect, I wouldn’t have anything interesting or insightful to share. The discoveries I made on my path towards a more positive life would not have been as valuable. As an avid non-fiction reader, I always appreciate being able to identify aspects of my life or experiences in the stories provided by writers. In The Attitude Influence, it was important for me that my readers be able to do this. I love when people reach out to me and say, “Oh my gosh, that’s me!” or “I had a boss who did that, and it drove me crazy.” These types of experiences connect us. They provide both a mirror for us to reflect upon and a channel marker to guide us. While trying to create a sense of urgency around being better human beings, I do not pull any punches in the book. I want people to be able to self-reflect and be accountable for how they behave and how they show up for other people.

OP: What differentiates it from other books in the same category?

LeAnn: Accountability is a strong underlying theme throughout the book. I created bad attitude types ‘BATs’ as a way to demonstrate how we sometimes behave in less than ideal ways (i.e., “The Know-it-All,” “The Blowhard,” “The Privileged,” etc.). I also provide the reader with The GREAT Attitude Toolbox (Gratitude, Relationship, Energy, Authenticity, & Thoughtfulness) and strategies for positively influencing our environments. The Attitude Influence also provides unique insights and real-world experiences to demonstrate the effectiveness of proper attitude management. I think my warmth is partnered well with my straight talk to maintain a healthy balance of inspiration and relatability that created a conversational tone throughout the book.

OP: Have you published any other books?

LeAnn: This is my first book.

OP: Do you plan to publish more?

LeAnn: I would like to publish a few more books. I am interested in creating content that will embrace differences and create connections. I plan to start my second book later this year or early next year.

OP: Thanks for your time, LeAnn! We look forward to learning more about you as you visit other bloggers!

Seeking Glory: A Novel About Relationships, Loss and Finding Your Way Home by Patricia Hamilton Shook

Technology has created a wide variety of ways to reach audiences all over the world. It takes is a little thinking outside the box and you can market a self-published book in creative, affordable and impactful ways. Consider book tours! Tours are a great way to connect with your readers and technology has made them easier and more cost effective than ever!

Author Patricia Hamilton Shook is taking her latest book Seeking Glory: A Novel About Relationships, Loss and Finding Your Way Home, on tour — a Virtual Book Tour with Outskirts Press. This will allow Patricia to take her book into the far corners of the globe, all from the comfort of her own home! Keep an eye out for Patricia’s book as she will be featured on several blogs over the weeks and months ahead!

Luckily for us, Patricia was kind enough to answer a few questions as the tour was getting started so that we can give you a sneak peek into the mind of the creator of Seeking Glory: A Novel About Relationships, Loss and Finding Your Way Home.

OP: Tell us a little bit about Seeking Glory. What is it about?

Patricia: Kate LaRue is a divorced, successful co-owner of an art and gift store on Cape Cod who assumes custody of her young granddaughter, Glory, after the death of her long-missing daughter Ally. Kate soon discovers that Glory is mute and seemingly traumatized. To help her, she must try to solve the mystery of her granddaughter’s origins. As she struggles to deal with her own and Ally’s past she finds she is not the only one seeking Glory.

Press the play button to watch the book video for Seeking Glory:

OP: Why did you decide to write this story?

Patricia: I felt compelled to write it. I had this and a couple of other stories in mind for a while that I really felt I had to put down in writing. I spent several years working on Seeking Glory writing whenever the motivation to do so came to me. I was in no rush because initially I did not expect to publish it. However, once I had it written I felt I had to publish it.

OP: How did you get your book published?

Patricia: I initially tried to find a literary agent but had little success. I decided to try self-publishing and, after reviewing several independent publishers, found that Outskirts Press was the best option.

OP: What types of readers would be interested in this story?

Patricia: I think the readers most interested in the book would be women who could identify with Kate; for example, strong successful women dealing with troubled family relationships particularly with teen aged and adult children as well as the those identifying with the difficulties of older adults trying to raise grandchildren, a dilemma that is not uncommon.

OP: What is special about your book?

Patricia: Seeking Glory is a complex story with many themes woven into it. One of the most prominent is the theme of religious and spiritual belief systems. This becomes an issue when Kate begins to uncover the mystery of her daughter’s and later her granddaughter’s past. It leads Kate to examine her religious/spiritual beliefs and places this as a central theme of the book. There are also many psychological themes the most obvious is Kate’s efforts to help four-year-old Glory to talk again using play therapy, something I became interested in when I was beginning to write the book. All of the adult characters have psychological issues that eventually come to light. I think human behavior and why we do what we do is fascinating. And it can make a good story.

OP: What differentiates it from other books in the same category?

Patricia: I think Seeking Glory is most different in the way it successfully combines the elements of literary women’s fiction and cozy mystery.

OP: Have you published any other books?

Patricia: Not as of yet.

OP: Do you plan to publish more?

Patricia: I am working on a new book tentatively titled Where Spirits Dwell which features some similar themes to Seeking Glory; family dynamics, mystery, religion and spirituality but in a different setting and voice.

OP: Thanks for your time, Patricia! We look forward to learning more about you as you visit other bloggers!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Patricia Hamilton Shook was born in Massachusetts, where she has lived most of her life. As a psychologist, she combines her professional expertise with an interest in spirituality and mysteries-along with a love of Cape Cod that dates back to childhood-to inform her debut novel, Seeking Glory.
