Self Publishing Book Spotlight: Bailey’s Day

Robert Haggerty’s first juvenile fiction, Bailey’s Day, entertainingly answers the question: what does your dog do all day when you go to work, and prompts dog owning children to imagine the possibilities of what really goes on with their pets when they’re not looking.

In Bailey’s Day, published by Outskirts Press, first time author Robert Haggerty speculates for his beginning readers about what actually happens when Bailey’s owner sets off to work. Hardly one to sleep all day, Bailey, a black and white pointer, sets off herself for a day of child pleasing adventures.Haggerty’s age appropriate text is accompanied by delightful, full color illustrations as well as photographs of the real life Bailey as it tells the tale of Bailey hooking up with her best friend, the wiener dog Frankie. All goes well with their visit to the swimming pool, their romp through the park, and their feast of tacos with Pete, The Taco Man, until Bailey suddenly runs into her owner, the mailman, out on his rounds.

Written for parents or teachers of children just beginning to read, author Haggerty takes careful measure with vocabulary building and with the pace and length of his sentences while still encouraging young readers’ imaginations to take off in flight about what their dogs do when they’re off at school for the day.

Bailey’s Day will be a hit, as well, with any parents or teachers who themselves have ever loved a dog.

About the Author:

Robert Haggerty lives in Tucson, Arizona, and has been a mailman for more than twenty years. Bailey’s Day is his first children’s book.

Self Publishing Book Spotlight: Changing of the Guard, The Yellowstone Chronicles

Ted Rechlin’s Changing of the Guard, The Yellowstone Chronicles, published by Outskirts Press, offers a striking portrayal of the Yellowstone of seventy million years ago set against the park as it is today. Rechlin’s elegant illustrations punctuate his text in a cleverly conceived historical and geographical tour of one of America’s favorite landscapes.

Rechlin describes Yellowstone as “a perfect mixture of danger and beauty” and his splendid artwork captures perfectly this unusual combination and remarkable land in both full color and dramatic black and white illustrations. The author’s own respect and admiration for nature come through page after page in the polished lines of his drawings and the clever counterpoint of today’s wild mammals against the extinct dinosaurs.Just as a person is partially defined by his history, so too is the environment of Yellowstone, and Changing of the Guard gives a more complete profile of the park by standing moose and elk side by side with tyrannosaurs and triceratops. Although an obvious choice for any child who loves dinosaurs, the book will also delight readers of any age who love nature and love the wild excitement of Yellowstone.

Rechlin’s professional experience as an artist in picture book illustration, comic book art, trading cards, tattoo and graphic design comes through brightly and clearly in the fine artwork of this volume and brings his love of Yellowstone directly into the home of the reader, regardless if that home is in Miami or the South Bronx.

About the Author:

Most of Ted Rechlin’s time is spent at the drawing board, either working on illustration projects or teaching his craft to aspiring artists. When Ted is not in his studio, he can usually be found hiking the Yellowstone back country. For more information on his art, teaching and public appearances, visit www.tedrechlinart.com.

He and his wife, Robin, currently live in central Florida.

Top 10 Self Publishing Book Marketing Options for January

Book marketing is an important component to successful self publishing. Outskirts Press is an industry leader in providing post-publication support, products, and services to its growing family of published authors.

Even if you have published elsewhere (sorry to hear that), our list of Top 10 Book Marketing Options can help you prioritize your book marketing efforts by providing you with the most popular and effective book marketing and promotional tactics as determined by our authors. These are tactics that are strongly recommended for successful book marketing after publication.

These are the marketing products and services determined to be most popular by our authors for the month of January 2010, listed below in alphabetical order:

Amazon Extreme Package
Save 25% on 3 amazing marketing tactics centered around Amazon: The Amazon Kindle Edition, Search Inside the Book, and the Keyword Search Submission Service. Plus a free copy of the Amazon best selling book, Sell Your Book on Amazon.
Amazon Keyword Search Submission
Participating books are “tagged” with applicable terms and keywords on Amazon’s Product Detail page. This encourages other visitors to your page to “tag” your book with the same keywords and phrases, which can give more “weight” to those terms in Amazon’s search results.
Amazon Kindle Edition
The Amazon Kindle is a revolutionary wireless reading device that allows its owners to instantly download books and newspapers. Only books that have been submitted to the Amazon Kindle via the required process and in the required format are available for Kindle readers to purchase and enjoy.
Amazon Search Inside the Book
Amazon’s “online equivalent” to browsing a bookstore. Amazon claims that books participating in this program enjoy “significant” sales improvement, on average, over books that do not.
Award Recognition Cover Enhancement
Adding an award seal to the front cover of your book helps notify everyone that you are an award-winning author with an award-winning book.
Barnes & Noble See Inside
Barnes & Noble’s answer to Amazon’s “Search Inside the Book” program. Books that participate in this program receive a “See Inside” icon next to their Barnes & Noble cover image, which invites potential customers to electronically “flip” through a small section of the book.
Book Blast Package
Save 25% on 5 of our popular marketing services that can blast your book into the stratosphere: Custom Press Release, PR Publicist Campaign, 60 Second Book Video Trailer, Book Review Submission Service, and 5 hours of Personal Marketing Assistance to put it all together.
Custom Press Release
Have our professional press release writer compose an original, unique press release for your book, submitted to you for your review/approval, and then distributed to our news wire service on your behalf.
Espresso Book Distribution
Time Magazine’s “Invention of the Year” allows a high-quality, black/white paperback book to be printed and sold in about 8 seconds… consider it a “book vending machine.”  And this option makes your book available via this exciting new sales channel.
PR Publicist
Like having your own publicist distribute your press release for you… Plus, after the release goes out, you will receive all the resulting leads for more personal follow-up, plus an electronic clipping service.

Outskirts Press published authors who are interested in any of these options can find further details and ordering information by clicking on the name (or image) of the option above. Information about additional marketing options can be found on the Marketing Options page of your Author’s Center.

Bologna Children’s Book Fair for Self-Publishing Writers

Is your book right for Bologna?

Considerations:

Attending international book fairs personally is often cost-prohibitive for self-publishing writers when you factor in expenses such as airfare, hotel, food, and transportation. And those are just the costs of going international. Then there are the costs of the exhibit itself, like the exhibition fees, the exhibition stand, and the “giveaways” (often called “freebies” or “schwag.”)

Advantages:

But book fairs are also the place where self-published authors can “be discovered.” Outskirts Press helps its authors place their books at 5 international book fairs for a reasonable cost.

The Bologna Children’s Book Fair is the world’s leading book fair focusing solely on children’s publishing with a focus on the sale of rights and international co-productions.  To increase your chances for success, your book must have full color illustrations inside the book to participate. Therefore, only our Pearl Full Color books are eligible.

The Bologna Children’s Book Fair occurs in March in Italy and hosts over 1400 international exhibitors and may be instrumental in forging industry connections or negotiating agreements or licenses for your work.

When you order the Bologna Children’s Book Fair from the Marketing Options Screen of your Author’s Center your book will receive valuable, face-out exposure on an exclusive shelf with 4 other Outskirts Press titles and a representative will be on-hand to personally answer questions about your book. Outskirts Press will provide the necessary copies of the book and all the necessary contact information for both the author and publisher, so interested parties can make further contact, during or after the fair. All inquiries Outskirts Press receives about your book will be forwarded directly to you for personal follow-up.

If you are a published Children’s book author with Outskirts Press and interested in exhibiting your book with the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, you can register for this event conveniently from your author’s center Marketing Options screen. Space is limited and filled on a first-come, first served basis. Due to the specific requirements of Bologna, this event is not a part of our Global Book Tour package and must be registered for separately if you are interested.

Self-Publishing Book Spotlight: Witnessing

U.N. Staffer Pens Book on
World Unity Through Christ

A new book from a former United Nations staffer aims to do nothing less than bring unity to the world—with one soul, that is oneness. Witnessing, first of a book trilogy from author Haile Gebre Egziabher explains how Christianity can heal old divisions and bring all the peoples of the world together. Haile knows some might call that vision naïve. But in a decades-long career with the United Nations, he saw first-hand how effective communication and the sharing of ideas can erase even the most pronounced rifts.

“With the U.N., I had the opportunity to visit many countries and continents, and found the world to be small,” says Haile, who is now retired and living in Asmara, Eritrea. “The experience of going around the world supported my dream of world unity. As a result, I have become rich in wisdom and spirituality. And I want to share that vision with others.”Witnessing does just that, in 13 compelling chapters that tackle everything from Christian basics to keys for harmonious living. At the core of the book is a belief that the tenets of Christianity function uniquely to promote worldwide harmony. Readers will learn how the Holy Trinity, the Commandments, church sacraments and Christ’s own life all add up to a way of living that makes war, division and strife not just unlikely—but unfathomable.

What’s stopping us from making that dream a reality? Quite simply, not enough people have surrendered their lives to Christ, Haile persuasively explains. Packed with powerful scripture, Witnessing will encourage non-believers and casual Christians alike to fully devote themselves to God, while at the same time provide devout Christians with the message they need to share with others.

For more information or to contact the author, please visit www.outskirtspress.com/witnessing.

When it came to telegraphing his message of love and peace to the world, he found that Outskirts Press was the best fit for his publishing needs.  This author purchased the Book Blast, saving 25% on 5 powerful marketing services to blast the book into the stratosphere! The Book Blast package includes the following options: Custom Press Release, PR Publicist Campaign, Book Review Submission Service, Book Video (shown above) and Personal Marketing Assistant.
