New Contest to Determine Best Book Cover Announced by Self-Publishing Leader Outskirts Press

New Contest to Determine Best Book Cover Announced by Self-Publishing Leader Outskirts Press

Outskirts Press is asking voters to literally judge a book by its cover.  Participants can vote through the month of October on their favorite of six featured book covers and the author whose book wins will be awarded a free Book Teaser.

October 19, 2010 – Denver, CO – Outskirts Press, the fastest growing self-publishing and book marketing company, announced today it is sponsoring a contest through the end of October 2010, for voters to choose their favorite book cover from six featured covers.  The winning author will be awarded a Book Teaser from Outskirts Press to help promote his or her book on popular video sharing sites such as YouTube, mySpace and MetaCafe.

The contest is hosted on the Outskirts Press blog at http://blog.outskirtspress.com.  The six Outskirts Press books chosen for voting are Common Choices for Uncommon People, Let’s Go Fishing, Moon Worms, Popularity Genie in a Bottle, The Shortest Distance and Smart Tales from Brainy the Cat.  Each of the books was published in September 2010, with a Diamond or Pearl publishing package and the Custom Cover option.

Results will be tracked and available for public viewing on the blog through the end of October 2010.  The author of the winning cover will be announced the first week of November 2010.

The winner’s prize, an Outskirts Press Book Teaser video, has been a popular option for authors because it is such a cost effective way to kick start the video promotion of one’s book.  Outskirts Press Book Teasers are professionally produced, thirty second videos that feature the book’s title, the author’s byline and photo (if provided), the cover and a specific snippet of licensed music.

These teasers are fast, flashy, high quality videos that authors can place on today’s most popular video sharing sites – YouTube, MetaCafe, mySpace, Viddler, etc. – in order to launch their viral marketing campaigns and increase the sales of their books.

The Book Cover contest punctuates the fact that, per industry statistics, a book has only eight seconds to attract a viewer.  If a picture is worth a thousand words, a well crafted book cover is worth ten thousand.  The six Outskirts Press books that voters will choose from illustrate the importance of high quality designs that immediately prompt viewers to investigate what is inside the book itself.

Voting takes only seconds and is completely free. To vote, visit http://blog.outskirtspress.com.

Self Publishing Author Spotlight – Andrew Rafkin

Self-Published Author Wins Triple Crown in Readers Favorite Book Awards

Veteran Outskirts Press author Andrew J. Rafkin recently swept an entire category in the 2009 Readers Favorite Book Awards by winning all three awards — the Gold, the Silver and the Bronze – for three of his action/adventure novels.

The prolific Californian author and avid boating and fishing enthusiast took the three top honors in action and adventure fiction for his novels Mexican Madness (the Gold), Mediterranean Madness (the Silver) and Creating Madness (the Bronze), each featuring O.R.C.A. retired Navy Seal, Commander Reef Johansen. Remarkably, a fourth book of his, Red Sky Morning, also published by Outskirts Press, was a Readers Favorite finalist in the non-fiction, autobiography category.

Readers Favorite was founded by Debra Gaynor to help authors with honest reviews of their work and to assist them in obtaining more recognition and exposure through a respected book contest.

“We appreciate the loyalty our serial authors like Andrew J. Rafkin have shown to Outskirts Press and attribute their continuing faith in us to the high quality service we provide them, both in printing their books and in marketing them to the level of success that award-winning authors like Andrew J. Rafkin deserve,” said Outskirts Press Director of Author Support, Kelly Schuknecht.

Besides author Rafkin’s four medals, twenty other books by Outskirts Press authors won awards in the 2009 Readers Favorite contest, too.

“We are incredibly proud of our authors,” Kelly Schuknecht went on to say, “and are so pleased when their accomplishments are acknowledged by awards like these from Readers Favorite. It’s no wonder that more and more award-winning authors are choosing Outskirts Press for their publishing and marketing needs.”

ForeWord Book of the Year Award Submission for Self Publishing Authors

Win $1,500 in Cash!

ForeWord Magazine’s Book of the Year Awards were established to bring increased attention from librarians and booksellers to the literary achievements of independent publishers and their authors. Our awards process is unique because we ask a jury of our readers, librarians and booksellers, to select their top categories as well as choose the winning titles. Their decisions take into consideration editorial excellence, professional production, originality of the narrative, author credentials relative to the book and the value the book adds to its genre.

All finalists and winners will be notified via email. Finalists are announced each April. Winners in each category and overall for fiction and non-fiction will be announced at the Book Expo of America. First, second, and third place winners will be awarded in each category. A $1,500 cash prize will also be awarded to Best Fiction and Best Nonfiction as determined by the editors of ForeWord Magazine. ForeWord Magazine reserves the right to withhold an award in any category should submissions not meet criteria outlined by editorial and professional production standards mentioned above. All cash prizes are solely at the discretion of ForeWord Magazine.

Winners and finalists will also be featured in ForeWord Magazine and elsewhere.

Outskirts Press published authors can purchase the ForeWord Book of the Year Award submission option at any time conveniently from within the Author’s Center. Outskirts Press can facilitate the submission details to all these contests for you. With your purchase of this package and your eligible book, we will handle all the details, including:

  •  the award submission fee
  • registering your book with the contest
  • sending them each the necessary review copies of your book
  • accurately and completely filling out the necessary entry forms
  • selecting the most appropriate category for your book (if we’re not sure, we’ll ask you)
  • shipping and handling costs of your book to each of the contest’s multiple judges

The registration deadline for this year’s award contest is Thursday, December 17, 2009.
