OUTSKIRTS PRESS is once again sponsoring Colorado Humanities who hosts the annual Colorado Book Awards. We encourage YOUR submissions for the 2021 Awards!

The annual event is run by the Colorado Center for the Book, the program department of the Colorado Humanities, which is dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments of Colorado’s outstanding authors, editors, illustrators, and photographers.

The Colorado Book Awards—presented annually by Colorado Humanities & Center for the Book—were launched in 1991 with four categories of awards to recognize authors, illustrators, editors, and publishers and have since expanded to ten literary categories. Many of Colorado’s most prominent authors have been recognized with awards, including David Milofsky, John Fielder, Tom Noel, Stephanie Kane, and Linda Hogan, among others.

Applications for the 2021 Colorado Book Awards are due January 7, 2022, and should be submitted directly to the Colorado Book Awards. Judging generally occurs in April, and the awards will be presented at a ceremony in June.

2015 Colorado Book Awards to be Sponsored by Outskirts Press

Self-publishing service provider Outskirts Press once again supports the efforts of Colorado Humanities to recognize and encourage Colorado creatives.

May 26, 2015 – Denver, CO – Outskirts Press, a self-publishing and book marketing service provider based out of Colorado, today announced it will sponsor the 2015 Colorado Book Awards. The annual awards, run by Colorado Humanities and Center for the Book, recognize outstanding contributions by Colorado authors, editors, illustrators and photographers in multiple categories.

Founded in 1991, the Colorado Book Awards has grown from four literary categories to the current ten, including anthology/collection, biography, children’s, creative non-fiction, fiction, history, pictorial, poetry and young adult. Over the years, some of Colorado’s most impressive and talented authors, including John Fielder, Linda Hogan, Tom Noel, Stephanie Kane and David Milofsky, have been recognized with awards.

“As a service provider to independent authors, it means a lot to us to be able to give back to the Colorado literary community that has so enriched our lives through their work,” said Outskirts Press Executive Vice President Kelly Schuknecht. “It is an honor for us to be able to contribute to the recognition of these local artists.”

Applications for the 2014 Colorado Book Awards were collected through January 2, 2015. Colorado Humanities and Center for the Book will announce the Colorado Book Award winners on Sunday, June 21, 2015, during the 24th Annual Colorado Book Awards ceremony at the Aspen Meadows Resort.

2010 Colorado Book Award Winners Announced and Honored in Aspen

Colorado Humanities announced on June 24th the winners of the 20th annual Colorado Book Awards, one of the oldest state book award programs in the country.  Sponsored in part by leading self-publishing and book marketing company Outskirts Press, the annual event is a way for the Colorado arts community to say “thank you” to the exceptionally gifted writers, editors, illustrators and photographers who bring the humanities to life in their Rocky Mountain state.

The Colorado Book Awards acknowledges the role these diverse artists play in helping others understand what it means to be human by documenting and interpreting human struggle, achievement, and community life in their publications.  Colorado Humanities envisions and promotes a Colorado that celebrates its heritage and its diversity by “passing on the knowledge of the past, the inspiration of the present and the hope for the future.”

“It is an honor for us to be able to contribute to the recognition these local artists so markedly deserve,” said Outskirts Press Vice President Kelly Schuknecht.  Outskirts Press has long been associated with Colorado Humanities and is a sponsor of the charitable, nonprofit organization.

The award ceremony on June 24th was the culminating event of the Aspen Summer Words Literary Festival hosted at the Doerr-Hosier Center inAspen by the Aspen Writers Foundation.  Colorado Book Award finalists gave public readings of their work and John Y. Cole, National Director of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, was the special guest for the festival.

“Our panel of selectors was excited and challenged by the many works again this year,” said Program coordinator Jennifer Long.  A full list of the winners in each category is available on the Colorado Humanities website, www.coloradohumaities.org.

Awards were presented to the outstanding contributors in multiple publishing categories, including nonfiction, creative nonfiction, fiction, biography, children’s, young adult, poetry, pictorial art and history.  To be eligible for a Colorado Book Award, entrants must be current Colorado residents, individuals engaged in ongoing literary work in the state or authors whose personal history, identity or literary work reflect a strong Colorado influence.  All must be writers, editors, illustrators or photographers.  Entries for the 20th annual awards had a 2010 publication date or were published in 2010 with a delayed, 2011 copyright.

Colorado Humanities and Outskirts Press Recognize Colorado Book Award Winners in Aspen

June 29, 2010 – Denver, CO – Colorado Humanities & Center for the Book announced the winners of the 19th annual Colorado Book Awards on June 25 in Aspen, Colorado.  With the Mayor of Denver, John Hickenlooper in attendance, the awards were announced in the picturesque Doerr-Hosier Center.
