Author Poll: Rayfield Walker Needs Your Help With His Book Cover

Rayfield Walker is self-publishing a book with Outskirts Press, and he wants your help deciding on his book cover.

Book Summary

Out of the Jungle is the heart-wrenching story of Rayfield Walker’s abuse and neglect as a child growing up in Guyana, at the hands of his violent and repressed father, to his eventual escape to New York, where he found success as a star student and catharsis in painting, filmmaking and writing. In New York, Rayfield found wage work at art supply stores in order to save up thousands of dollars to hire professional book editors to help realize his dreams as a published author.

Rayfield’s accounts of repeatedly verbal, mental and physical abuse offer a grim portrait of life in rural Guyana. His father expressed the pain of an identity as a gay man living in an unforgiving homophobic society on young Rayfield, including daily beatings until he urinated or defecated on himself, only to stop in order to lock him in the kitchen cupboard for hours at a time. His grandparents home also became the location of sexual assault and rape by close friends and relatives. Despite enduring horrifying and repeated abuses, he fought for his life with an iron will and the utter determination that there had to be something better.

Rayfield eventually found refuge in his grandparent’s home where his grandmother instilled important virtues and strength of character. He eventually found himself a path to New York after accepting the truth embedded in the advice his grandmother had given him: remembering where you came from can give you strength, clinging to the past only leads to stagnation.

With the help of those who cared for him, he learned to grab hold of his dreams and to find comfort in the momentum needed to reach his next goal, believing that in this life, no one knows what they will experience, accomplish, or who they can become.

In this third much-awaited novel in the series, Mitch Blaine and his learned sidekick Beyer have returned to their isolated retreat on Apache Lake in the Arizona desert, where a young Mexican girl had been ruthlessly tossed out of a low-flying aircraft. After saving her life, they had been drawn into a battle of retribution with the same gang of thugs who had attempted to slay her. Severely wounded himself in the ensuing fray, Beyer has unilaterally determined that it is time to ‘go home’. Now the intrepid duo has decided to fly back to Australia in their vintage PBY flying boat, the ‘Wayward Wind’. They plan a fuel stop in Vanuatu in the South Pacific to visit some old friends, who have retired to Havannah Harbor on the island of Efate. Port Havannah was a repair base for the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet just prior to the Battle of the Coral Sea. Only thing is, it’s cyclone season down there, and one of the most devastating storms that part of the world has ever known is heading right towards Vanuatu. Blaine and Beyer arrive at the exact moment that the cyclone is battering the islands. Author Poll: Milton King Needs Your Help With His Book Cover

Milton King is self-publishing a book with Outskirts Press, and he wants your help deciding on his book cover.

Book Summary

Think Moderates draws on two social truths: 1) we cannot resolve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them (Albert Einstein) and 2) the problems resulting from the actions of extremists can only be rooted out by strong, persistent, and determined actions by moderates (Martin Luther King Jr.). Thus, Think Moderates points out that to offset the problem-creating thinking currently driving public debate, we must recast public debate. We must draw moderates into the debate and give prominence to the problem-solving and reconciling behaviors they typically exemplify in group settings. And we must also give prominence to the kind of thinking moderates bring to the table.

About the Author

While a pastor and community leader for more than 20 years, Milton King—a consummate moderate himself—has worked extensively with moderates, progressives, and conservatives to achieve goals important to selected churches and communities in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Out of the crucible of that experience, along with countless conversations on current issues with other moderates, has emerged the ideas and insights in this book. He has a BA in history, a Masters of Divinity, and a MA in English language and literature, and has pursued social work studies.

Author Poll: Jonathon Pulliam Wants Your Help With His Cover

Jonathon Pulliam is self-publishing a book with Outskirts Press, and he wants your help deciding his upcoming book cover.

Book Summary:

Hebrews 4:2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them m not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

Faith is the ingredient that makes the word of God come alive in our lives. The more Faith you have the more God can work in you, through you and for you.

Author Bio:

Jonathon Lee Pulliam was born on October 4, 1968 in Detroit, Michigan, the sixth child of Elder Reynard and Sister Geraldine Pulliam. He attended Clinton Street Greater Bethlehem Temple Church where the late Bishop Samuel N. Hancock was the pastor until 1974 when his family relocated to Indianapolis, IN.  It was as Mount Zion Apostolic Church under the leadership of the late Bishop James O. Franklin that he received the precious gift of the Holy Ghost at the tender age of eleven.

Brother Pulliam has always had a great love for and infinitely excitable spirit when it comes to working, worshipping and praise in the kingdom of God.  He has tirelessly worked in various capacities in the church on the local and national levels including Sunday school teacher, choir director, church musician, youth leader, usher, altar worker and praise and worship leader. He diligently worked and grew under the pastorate of his father, Elder Reynard Pulliam in Fort Wayne, IN, and when the family relocated to Atlanta, Georgia.

In 1988, at the age of nineteen, he was beautifully called into the ministry of preaching and has continued to serve the people of God.  In 1993, he was ordained as Elder by the Pentecostal Churches of the Apostolic Faith Inc. and in 2007 was confirmed as District Elder for the state of Alabama. In March of 2014 he was appointed Bishop over the state of New Mexico.  On July 6, 2003, he was installed as Pastor of Apostolic Church Inc. in Decatur, AL.  Pastor Pulliam attributes his growth and maturity in the word of God to his pastor and teacher Bishop Walter McBride.

Bishop Pulliam considers service to be the ultimate call and he continues to actively and avidly do so in multiple roles in both the church and his community.  Currently, he is serving on the Executive Board of Directors of the Pentecostal Churches of the Apostolic Faith Inc., Assistant Chairman of the Southeastern District Council and founder and president of Southwest Decatur Community Development Corporation.

In April 1994, Pastor Pulliam was beautifully joined in holy matrimony to Tracy Wilson, MD of Jackson, Mississippi, and their family currently resides in Huntsville, Alabama.  They are blessed with three wonderful: Joshua, Jonathon, II, and Carla. It is Pastor’s Pulliam’s heartfelt and most sincere belief, “Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it; except the Lord keeps the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.” Psalm 127:1

Author Poll: George Thomson Wants Your Help With His Cover

George Thomson is self-publishing a book with Outskirts Press, and he wants your help deciding his book cover.

Book Summary

Can An Honest Man Be Elected President?

I didn’t give the protagonist of The Candidate a face. I didn’t give him a body or a race either. That was not an oversight. I am confident you will do that for me. I did give him a voice and when you hear that voice you will assign him whatever characteristics seem appropriate to you. Listen to that voice. If you don’t know what Norman Telos has to say about life in America then you don’t know where you live. Does a fish know he is swimming in water? Does he know his pond, lake, river, ocean? After a series of wars, recessions and global warming we are wondering where we are and where we are going. There is a fear that rich powerful men have an agenda for America. The Carlisle Group did write a plan for the new American Century. They believe that war is good for our economy and our souls. War is of course older than the Carlisle Group. Eisenhower warned us of the Military Industrial Complex. Remember that a demand for more bombs requires that they be exploded.

Mr. Telos also speaks of important economic realities for a democratic capitalist society. He reminds us of an unshakable truth that Karl Marx gave us. “Capitalist societies require a reserve army of the unemployed to keep wages down.” So we keep a pool of unemployed and poorly employed in poverty.

This book is written for people who can think and want to think. It is not the Sermon on the Mount or holy writ, but a spark to your own thinking.

Author Bio

Dan Thomson’s father became an Air Force officer when Dan was two years old so he grew up on military bases and civilian quarters in Illinois, California, Japan, Idaho, Canada, New York and Texas.  When he came of age he earned a BA and MA in Anthropology.  Then he earned a JD in Law and practiced for less than a year before he found honest work.  During his early years and in school and grad school Dan supported himself and raised three sons by working in factories.  When he had time he wrote.  This book is the first effort complete enough for publication.  There will likely be others.
