Luckily for us, David MacFawn was kind enough to answer a few questions as the tour was getting started so that we can give you a sneak peek into the mind of the creator of  Applied Beekeeping in the United States.

OP: Tell us a little bit about Applied Beekeeping in the United States. What is it about?

David: This book is about applied or practical beekeeping.

OP: Why did you decide to write this story?

David: I wrote this book because there is a void in beekeeping literature. There are plenty of theoretical books and purely beginners’ books available, but very few applied books have been written.

OP: How did you get your book published?
David: Outskirts Press, Inc. published my book. I worked with Outskirts Press on the formatting, editing, and compilation of the book. Dr. Dewey Caron wrote the foreword.

OP: What types of readers would be interested in this story?
David: The readers interested in this book are those seeking an applied practical approach for beginners through advanced beekeepers. It is a compilation of articles I published in Bee Culture, American Bee Journal, and Beekeeping Your First Three Years over the past five to seven years, plus some unpublished material.

OP: What is special about your book?

David: My book is unique because the information covers a broad range of beekeeping topics. It begins with basic beekeeping (smokers, moving hives, pulling honey, going through a colony, laying workers, the bee year, splitting, extracting your honey crop, when is a colony worth saving, swarming, drawing out comb, feeders, installing a package of bees, safety in the beeyard, frames and foundation, beeswax candles, bottom boards, walk-away splits, feeding, rotating old comb, and determining how many colonies to have at each location). I also discuss equipment (assembling frames and foundation, amassing equipment), planning (establishing out-yards, sales and marketing, pollination, mentoring, and starting a bee club) and finance (when and how much equipment should you purchase), as well as other items of interest. I have over 50 years’ experience working with honey bees, mainly in the southeastern United States.

OP: What differentiates it from other books in the same category?

David: This book stands out from other books because it is an applied book and not theoretical.

OP: Have you published any other books? Do you plan to publish more?

David: I have published Beekeeping Tips And Techniques For The Southeast United States, Beekeeping Finance (Beekeeping Tips and Techniques for the Southeast United States, by David E. MacFawn, and Getting The Best From Your Bees, by David MacFawn/Chris Slade. Both books are published by Outskirts Press). In addition, I plan to publish another bee book.

OP: How can someone learn more about your book or purchase it?

David: My book can be purchased via Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, and Dadant & Sons bee supply.

OP: Thanks for your time, David! We look forward to learning more about you as you visit other bloggers!
