The importance of great cover design pt. 1

When it comes to self publishing a high quality book, there is no doubt that a strong cover is among one of the most important elements. And when it comes to strong, artistic, custom cover design, there is no doubt that the designers at Outskirts Press are at the top of their game.

Books are judged by their covers, and consumers look at the cover of a book for approximately 3 seconds, on average, before deciding whether or not they are interested enough to look closer. That’s also how long a prospective wholesaler or distributor or editor or agent looks at your book when deciding whether or not to stock/order/buy/represent it.

3 seconds…

That is all you have to get someone interested in your book. After the months, years, or decades it took to write it, don’t drop the ball when it comes to the cover. Fortunately, Outskirts Press offers a variety of cover options to help. Yes, we let authors submit their own covers, although believe it or not, most authors are writers, not designers.  And yes, we offer customizable covers that are already professionally pre-designed as a part of all our publising packages.

But for the “best of the best” for your book, the artistic custom cover option available with the Diamond, Pearl, and Ruby packages is the only way to go.  For $299 you get what other publishers charge upwards of $999 for.

So, without further ado, we kick off a week-long celebration recognizing some of the truly extraordinary covers on the high-quality books published by Outskirts Press, presented in no particular order below. And if you think your cover has what it takes, submit it to the Random Book Machine to see how it stacks up with others.

3 Self Publishing Steps to $50,000

The fastest-growing full-service self-publishing company, Outskirts Press, bucks self-publishing trends once again by delivering 5-figure royalty checks for the second quarter of 2008.

Five Self-Published Authors Earn Over $50,000 in Royalties from Outskirts Press

Outskirts Press, the fastest-growing full-service self-publishing company, announces that its top-five earning authors combined to gross over $50,000 in royalties in the second quarter of 2008. This is on the heels of a first quarter in which five Outskirts Press authors combined to gross over $75,000.

“Three of our top-five earning authors are different from the first quarter,” stated Outskirts Press CEO Brent Sampson. “This demonstrates that not only does Outskirts Press produce bestselling books month after month, but that any author’s book holds the potential for incredible success when published through Outskirts Press.”

What increases an author’s chances for success?

  1. Write a good book and have it professionally edited. No amount of marketing muscle can overcome a poorly written or edited book.  Authors with Outskirts Press take care of the writing responsibilities, and then have the option of partaking in optional copyediting service for the finishing touch.  Outskirts Press features three levels of professional editing. The most popular and highly recommended copyediting service costs just 1.4 cents per word.
  2. Don’t cut corners on the cover. Your front cover has three seconds to attract a buyer’s attention. And since the majority of self-published books are sold on retail websites like Amazon and Barnes & Noble, the cover is more important than ever. Just ask Bob Selden, a top-five author, whose book, What To Do When You Become The Boss (ISBN 9781432714284), features an artistic custom cover from Outskirts Press. “I had my own initial design which I thought was pretty good,” stated Mr. Selden. “However, the custom cover designer at Outskirts Press played with my original concept in a way I had not thought of. The result is a striking cover that really stands out amongst similar type books in the management genre.”

  3. Promote your book! Your destiny is in your hands and no one else’s. Just ask Frank P. Stiles, top-five author of Evil Brothers (ISBN 9781432710422). “I have given over thirty talks to various organizations since February.  My book is in all the local libraries and I have been invited to a big book sale in Monroe, Michigan.  Only thirty authors were invited from Ohio and Michigan.”

And that’s just for starters. Marketing support like the exclusive Marketing COACH provides Outskirts Press Diamond authors with promotion advice and marketing suggestions via email for years after publication. Four out of the five top-earning authors in the second quarter published with the Diamond publishing package.

“In this day and age of print-on-demand, people are discovering that any old company can print a book,” states Sampson. “But what good is that?  Successful writers are separating themselves from the pack by publishing their book with Outskirts Press, a full-service, custom publishing company that provides authors with support before, during, and after publication.”

Professional author websites for self publishing writers

If every successful author has a website, why doesn’t every author have a website? They should. And now they can.

Introducing the Enhanced Customizable Author Website from Outskirts Press in partnership with Cevado Technologies.

  • Add as many pages to your website as you like. Delete pages whenever you want.
  • Easily and quickly choose different designs, colors, and navigation options.
  • Your personal website is set-up for you; it’s as easy as ordering the option.
  • Live telephone customer service is available with Cevado tech support to help you with your website whenever you need it.

Not that you will need any help. The online interface is as user-friendly and powerful as they come.

Why does every author need a website?

  • To market & sell their book
  • To build their “platform” as an author
  • To communicate with their readers

How does every author get a website?

It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3… 4.

Step 1. Publish with Outskirts Press by clicking here. After your book is published, order the optional Enhanced Customizable Author Website from your Marketing Center.

Step 2. Your professional author website will be set-up for you, usually within 48 business hours, and ready for you to customize however you want with the amazingly simple online interface.

Step 3. Edit the content of your website with a familiar set of controls, just like a word processor.

Your changes are made instantly in a “what you see is what you get” manner.

While editing and adding content, you can also define the navigation controls, add pages, rename pages, and add images, whenever you want. Easy as *snap*.

Step 4. Next comes choosing your color and theme, and the new Customizable Website interface makes it easy:

Webpage vs. Website?

Yes, Outskirts Press has always offered a free author webpage with every publishing package, and we still do. Up to 16 different color/layout choices are available, depending upon your package choice. And you can edit the content of your single webpage easily and efficiently within your author’s center at any time, no programming knowledge necessary. For some authors, this is sufficient. It is certainly very cool. And with our optional Content Formatting option, it’s even more flexible and powerful.

However, for many authors one single webpage is simply not enough. They need a multi-paged, fully configurable website to promote their numerous books or to promote themselves and/or their careers.

PROBLEM SOLVED!
The professional, fully customizable enhanced author website solution from Outskirts Press.

Need help with your new professional website through Outskirts Press? No problem. Every author who orders the new website will have live telephone toll-free technical support to help them with their website. Tech support, hosting, and technical issues for these professional author websites is managed by Cevado Technologies, independently of Outskirts Press to offer the high quality website service and knowledge our authors expect.

The website hosting and live tech support that comes with each Website Option requires an additional monthly fee of $29, which is billed directly by Cevado Technologies once the optional Professional Customizable Website has been ordered through Outskirts Press from within your author’s center for the price of $299.

To order: Sign-in to your author’s center and access your Marketing Options page once your book has been published.
