The longest journey begins with a single step. “During August 1999, David Lien climbed his first fourteener (14,000-foot peak) in Colorado’s rugged Rocky Mountains. Almost seven years later, during May 2006, he went on to tackle the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest. Eleven climbers died on the mountain that year (the second highest-ever Everest death total), including two of Lien’s fellow climbers. But David made the difficult decision to turn back at over 25,200 feet during the team’s summit push, a decision that saved his life. David’s quest began as an attempt to climb 44 fourteeners in four years, but it turned out to be about much more than climbing mountains.”

Age-Old Quests (Hunting, Climbing & Trekking)Age-Old Quests (Hunting, Climbing & Trekking)

David Lien began fishing in northern Minnesota at the age of 4, shot his first squirrel when he was 8, and his first deer when he was 13. These early hunting experiences laid the foundation for David’s later climbing and trekking in some of the world’s most remote and rugged regions, including South America’s Patagonia, Asia’s Himalayas, Australia’s Outback, and the interior of Antarctica. He’s also been to highest points in all 50 U.S. states and on the 54 highest peaks in Colorado (the 14ers). David’s worldwide travels have taken him to 31 countries on each of the seven continents. In addition, he has tackled some of the world’s highest and most dangerous mountains, including Mount McKinley in Alaska and Mount Everest in Nepal/Tibet. Lien turned back at 25,200 feet on the north/Tibet side of Mount Everest during May 2006, whereas two of his fellow expedition members died during their summit attempts.
