Self-Publishing Author Spotlight: J.T. Dossett

A book that takes us back to the glory days of our youth is a precious thing indeed. This week in our Self-Publishing Author Spotlight, she shine a light on a self-publishing author who hearkens back to the past with his works of fiction. This week Outskirts Press proudly features J.T. Dossett, author of three coming-of-age fiction novels through Outskirts Press.

Jim Dossett embarked on his journey to determine his origins in the “back forty” of his life. That’s when he discovered the identity of his biological parents, and that his given name was “Bobby Ray.” He lives in East Tennessee, with his wife, Brenda, and is in the process of writing his second novel.

Finding Bobby RayFinding Bobby Ray

My name is Harley. I was thrown away when I was a child. But I was found by angels that folded me in their wings and delivered me to a safe place. It wasn’t heaven; it was imperfect in ways that mere mortals are apt to gaum things up, but it was close to paradise, especially for a young ‘un; with creeks to swim, hollers and cool, deep woods to explore; and hillsides on which to lay down in the sun, surrounded by fields of wildflowers and the whisper of the wind in the long, waving grass. In this heaven, on the Cumberland Plateau, in East Tennessee, I felt blessed to be a child of the earth, which made me feel sacred; nurtured by folks who taught me many lessons; about humility, the sanctity of simple living, and that family, blood- kin or not, like love, is everything. As I grew older, I began to believe I was different than these angels that called me their own. I believed that I was not like them; that I had borrowed my identity from those who found me. Surrounded by their glory, I still felt alone and wondered worriedly, about my beginnings. A rage filled me that I couldn’t explain and I drifted away from my divine nature, wondering why I came into this life in the first place. After several hard-learned lessons, I felt sacred once more. But my sweet life was interrupted when I discovered Bobby Ray, and was confronted by the unhinged entity that wanted to reclaim him. This is our story.

Starvin’ Dog and the GuardiansStarvin’ Dog and the Guardians

Harry Cunningham often likened bad luck to “a starving dog that followed him everywhere, eager to lap up his misery.” He was correct. Since childhood he was dogged by bad, even disastrous luck. Unbeknownst to him, there were Guardians posted along the treacherous road he travelled; from the peanut fields of Georgia, to the jungles of Colombia; to the Arabian gulf, Texas, Mexico, and to the vast prairie of Illinois. Some of these Guardians were residents of this earthly plane and some were sons of light and twilight; hidden within our fellow human beings. All were sent to point Harry in the direction of his destiny, and ensure that, in the end, he regained peace; to eventually see his actions from a higher perspective and that angels come in forms other than those attired in robes and halos.

Glory on Stinking Creek Glory on Stinking Creek

The Baird family migrates right up the road, to their patriarch’s ancestral home on Stinking Creek. It’s a paradise on earth for them to live communally; in many ways similar to the way their ancestors did for centuries. The family grows and so does their love and affection for one another. Their devotion is sorely tested though, when the scourge unfurls its tentacles and rips one of their own away from them. They rejoice when their prodigal daughter returns from the depths of debauchery, but life will never be the same, as those orchestrators of an endemic plague of drugs pose a continual threat to the fortress on Stinking Creek, throughout Southern Appalachia, and beyond.
