Self-Publishing Author Spotlight: Mike Tucker

So this is it: our last Self-publishing Author Spotlight of 2014. It was a banner year for Outskirts Press and for our published authors, and the New Year promises to bring a whole new crop of talent and the blessings that come with it.

Outskirts Press has had had the good fortune to work with many talented and successful individuals over the years as they strive to make their self-publishing dreams come true. For that reason, we feel compelled to give a nod to the authors who’ve, in turn, contributed to our success. Every now and then, we celebrate one of our successful authors in our Self-Publishing Author Spotlight. This week Outskirts Press proudly features Mike Tucker, author of a number of action-adventure novels and military history and fiction works. This prolific self-publishing author shares his exciting and insightful work in this week’s — and this year’s final — Self-Publishing Author Spotlight.

The only author of his generation compared to Hemingway, Mike Tucker is a novelist, historian and poet. Born in 1960, he was raised in Japan, Northern England and America. He holds degrees in history and literature, and honors in poetry. Following his apprenticeship as a writer in Washington, D.C., from 1983-1986, where he worked as a concrete laborer and organized poetry benefits for Central American refugees, he was an American Marine infantryman. Under fire as a young poet with Spanish counter-terrorists in Barcelona in 1981, he was the only author on counter-terrorist missions with both Delta Force and SEAL Team Six commandos after September 11. At this writing, his next book, Clandestine, a novel, was slated for international release. He lives in the Near East and Portugal.

Spartacus Did the Right ThingSpartacus Did the Right Thing

Inspired by the legend of Spartacus, Spartacus Did the Right Thing is a classic journey story and a meditation on freedom. Raw, profane, gripping and poignant, Mike Tucker’s second novel is a tribute to the U.S. Navy SEALS, a stunning homage to the Black Lahu, Hmong and Karen hill tribes of northern Thailand and a no-holds-barred tale of raids against Burmese Army slave labor patrols. Above all, it is Jake Deveraux’s story, the story of a U.S. Navy SEAL veteran whose quest leads him to discover a truth ancient as the legend of Spartacus and real in every generation: No matter how many lives you save, the most important life you save is your own.

“Rich man, poor man, when your world falls apart, you’re the same man, alone and hurting like you’ve never hurt before and trying to find a way to carry on.”

“‘The Klan and the Mob are both in the same business, the law-purchasing business. Even in hard times, that’s a business making real money in America. You’re right, they’ll want to negotiate. Fine. They can negotiate with the Almighty.'” from 1931, a novel by Mike Tucker

“‘Point-blank, provocative and raw, a tour de force of narrative, 1931 is Mike Tucker’s best novel, his most unique and distinctive work– authentic and compelling.'” Will Layman, American jazz critic, author and educator. 1931 is an epic, riveting Great Depression crime saga and a classic American novel, from the time of the grenade and the tommy gun and the bloody, undeclared, no holds barred war on the streets and shores of the United States, when the Mafia ran bootlegging with an iron fist and the Special Agents of the Bureau of Investigation took on the Mafia from coast to coast.

Taking Down Al Qaeda in the Hindu KushTaking Down Al Qaeda in the Hindu Kush

“The Taliban, Al Qaeda, and Lashkar E Taiba have us surrounded, on every hilltop, every ridgeline. We hold the bridge, the village and the Girl’s School. They have us hemmed in and stitched up. We must hold. Know this: the Taliban, Al Qaeda and Lashkar E Taiba are here to stamp us. We have to kill them here.” – Ishmael. US Navy SEAL Team 6 counter-terrorist Hindu Kush, Afghanistan. August 3rd, 2009

“Seven Americans went up a mountain to strike at Al Qaeda and Mike Tucker faced death with them, coming back down from 10,000 feet in the Hindu Kush with a badly-wounded US Navy SEAL Team 6 counter-terrorist; Tucker was wounded himself, carried a .203 down the mountain on deuce point and survived to write this stunning, poignant indictment of Karzai, Petreaus and American counterinsurgency failure in Afghanistan, Taking Down Al Qaeda in the Hindu Kush. It is also the only book from the Afghan War to present both a Central Asian and global counter-terrorist strategy, Tucker’s bold, incisive and fresh counter-terrorism strategy: “From the Inside, Out.” – Will Layman, American jazz critic, editor and educator
