It is the final summer of Collie’s innocence when an ill-fated romance forces her into maturity. Fast approaching the age of adulthood under the king’s law, Collie, the beautiful, eldest daughter of a Middletown tinker, sets her sights upon a handsome young fisherman named Dugan, the troubled son of an unscrupulous man from the lower-class village of Ganty. A tumultuous love affair soon ensues as they attempt to cross the lines of class segregation, bigotry, and religious differences amid their own internal conflicts. Collie clings to her dreams of grandeur—a life of unfettered leisure, travel, and excitement, for she fears to end up like her mother, tied to a kitchen and a house full of children. The rebellion against her mother and her way of life is a constant source of contention between them as she doggedly pursues Dugan, shunning the affections of the blacksmith, Arrick, a more proper, acceptable suitor, favored by Collie’s parents. Down in Ganty, there are two dangerous men of power—a pub master named Barrtel, and Dugan’s father, Harlo, cordial enemies that tolerate one another in an uneasy truce. Dugan spends a great deal of time drinking at Barrtel’s pub in an effort to escape some of the unspeakable horrors he has been involved with at the hands of his father. As Collie resists becoming her mother, Dugan resists becoming his father while the two young lovers struggle in their rocky, forbidden relationship, and Collie slowly begins to unravel the mystery of a secret past involving Harlo and her own parents. Set in the mythical realm of Donnel by the sea in the rising spread of Christianity, Hope Flies on Broken Wings delves into two adolescent minds and their individual, personal struggles that draw them together while pushing them apart—two souls seeking redemption, each with a completely different life view of what constitutes hell on earth in this poignant tale of love and loss.

Exit StrategyExit Strategy

Jonas Dumar has a problem. Having little faith that his lawyer can get him acquitted of the murder charge he faces in Massachusetts, Jonas takes to the sea under an assumed identity to seek asylum with a past college chum who now lives in the Shetland Islands. Hoping to ease the loneliness of the voyage, at a quick stop in Newfoundland, he takes on board, Gabe and Izzy, a young couple trying to work their way back to Spain. Only when he’s back out on the open sea does Jonas begin to suspect his passengers are not what they appear to be. But then again, neither is Jonas Dumar. So begins a nightmarish voyage across the North Atlantic. After a failed attempt to abandon Gabe and Izzy in Greenland, Jonas awakes one morning to find himself sailing alone with nothing but a haunting dream and a resurrected childhood friend. Gabe and Izzy have vanished without a trace. But then they come back. Delving into the mind of a man in possession of too many secrets, Exit Strategy is a wild excursion into a realm of the fantastic, as Jonas Dumar comes to realize that some secrets are better left unknown. A man really can learn more about himself than he ever wants to know. Author warning: Contains graphic material that might be unsuitable for some readers.

Hope Rises from the AshesHope Rises from the Ashes

Collie’s journey into adulthood was met with tragic consequences when she defied society to follow her heart. In this sequel to “Hope Flies on Broken Wings,” Collie attempts to escape the haunting memories of the worst night in her young life. Fearing a lifetime of heartbreak and shame, she leaves her seaside homeland of Donnel to seek refuge in the Tillaman Realm beyond the eastern mountains. But she soon finds herself wishing she’d never left home when she becomes hopelessly entangled in a dangerous game of possession and jealousy between two Tillaman warriors and the women who desire them. Has a reluctance to part with her merman scale charm bound her into a prison of her own making? Or will a gift from the sea be her salvation?

Hope Rises from the Ashes by L.F. Falconer Virtual Book Tour

As an author in this economy, you have to come up with creative ways to market a self-published book. While book tours are a great way to connect with your readers, they aren’t the most affordable method of promotion. However, technology has made it possible for an alternative.

Take note from self-publishing Outskirts Press author, L.F. Falconer, who is taking her latest book, Hope Rises from the Ashes, on tour – a virtual book tour, that is. He will be featured on several blogs over the weeks and months ahead so keep your eyes peeled to learn more about her and her book.

Luckily for us, L.F. Falconer was kind enough to answer a few questions as the tour was getting started so that we can give you a sneak peek into the mind of the creator of Hope Rises from the Ashes.

Hope Rises from the Ashes book cover

OP: Tell us a little bit about Hope Rises from the Ashes. What is it about?

LFF: This is the continuing story of Collie.  Trying to escape the haunting memories of the most traumatic night of her young life, the tinker’s daughter leaves her homeland to search for possible happiness in the neighboring kingdom of Tilla.  Yet, in the mountain city of Sark, she soon becomes the victim of a possessive, brutal man and all she wants now is to go back home.

OP: Why did you decide to write this story?

LFF: In Hope Flies on Broken Wings, young Collie tinker managed to capture the hearts of many of my readers and I was often asked, “What happens to her now?  Where does she go?”  So, in response, I offer up this sequel as her journey into adulthood continues, though, of course, not without its pitfalls.

OP: What types of readers would be interested in this story?

LFF: Many of the circumstances and issues Collie has to deal with transcend time and are not locked into any particular era.  Most of the readers of my “Hope” novels are adult women who can relate to the emotional struggle of Collie’s experiences as she matures.

OP: What is special about your book?  What differentiates it from other books in the same category?

JCS: While Hope Rises from the Ashes is classified as historical fantasy, it could very well have been coming-of-age, or adventure, or possibly even romance since it does involve a love story.  It touches upon so many variable topics that make it hard to define, and the fantasy, while integral to the plot and setting, is understated instead of being hardline.

OP: Have you published any other books? Do you plan to publish more?

LFF: Hope Flies on Broken Wings, the sister book to Hope Rises from the Ashes, was my debut novel, another tale that rides the cusp of genre as it introduces Collie and the forbidden young man to whom she had lost her heart.  In a wide deviation from Collie’s simple innocence, I also have a modern day, adult, dark psychological thriller with a paranormal element called Exit Strategy.  There are several other works I have in progress which I hope will see publication soon.

OP: Thanks for your time, L.F. Falconer! We look forward to learning more about you as you visit other bloggers!

Virtual Book Tour Exit Strategy by L. F. Falconer

As an author in this economy, you have to come up with creative ways to market a self-published book. While book tours are a great way to connect with your readers, they aren’t the most affordable method of promotion. However, technology has made it possible for an alternative.

Take note from self-publishing Outskirts Press author, L. F. Falconer, who is taking his latest book, Exit Strategy, on tour – a virtual book tour, that is. He will be featured on several blogs over the weeks and months ahead so keep your eyes peeled to learn more about him and his book.

Luckily for us, J.C. was kind enough to answer a few questions as the tour was getting started so that we can give you a sneak peek into the mind of the creator of Exit Strategy.

Exit Strategy book cover

OP: Tell us a little bit about Exit Strategy. What is it about?

LFF: Exit Strategy is the story of Jonas, a man suffering from multiple personality disorder, who chooses to run from the law when accused of a murder he believes he didn’t commit, a journey that takes him from Massachusetts to Newfoundland, to Greenland, and finally to the Shetland Islands.   Under the torments of Gabe and Izzy, two young passengers he took on board his boat, Jonas begins to unravel and discovers some unsettling, buried truths about himself and his past.  And he just wants out.

OP: Why did you decide to write this story?

LFF: I was looking for a diversion from the medieval fantasy realm I’d been involved with for so many years.  Exit Strategy started out as a far different story when I first conceived the idea, but once the characters of Gabe and Izzy came to life, the story took a turn to the left and blossomed.

OP: What types of readers would be interested in this story?

LFF: This is definitely an adult novel, and will probably appeal to most anyone who enjoys digging into the shadier side of human nature.  And while it can get pretty dark in some spots, there are enough moments of light humor to keep it from being too heavy.

OP: What is special about your book?  What differentiates it from other books in the same category?

LFF: This book is told entirely from the perspective of a very disturbed man and contains much that might cause the reader to question the reality of certain characters and situations.  It also incorporates some dark fantasy, yet all is subjective as to what might be true and what might simply be the invention of Jonas Dumar’s fractured mind.

OP: Have you published any other books? Do you plan to publish more?

LFF: In 2012, I published my first novel, Hope Flies on Broken Wings, a tragic love story set on the edge of medieval fantasy.  I am currently working on its much-requested sequel.  I am also writing a collection of macabre short stories.  I tend not to be a slave to genre.  I write what inspires me.
