6 Reasons to Be Thankful for Publishing Today

This time every year, we find ourselves counting our many blessings. The self-publishing industry is experiencing many exciting changes, and we at Outskirts Press never forget how fortunate we are to be at the leading edge of those changes.

Our authors are an important part of leading that change. As you go about the frenzied business of readying for the holiday festivities, take a moment or two to give thanks. Take a breath and think about the many blessings that come with striking out on your own as a self-publishing author today:

  1. Research is easy in this Google-centric age. Remember when the simple task of double-checking facts involved multiple trips to the city library? Worse, if the library didn’t have the reference you needed, you might be on the hook for your own research materials. What did we ever do before Google? While it’s true you can’t believe everything you read on the Internet, you can rely on reputable websites for simple date- and fact-checking – in seconds, rather than hours. That time savings gives you so much more freedom to create.
  2. Feedback and empathy is never more than a mouse-click away. When you need feedback from another writer or a trusted friend – or just need to blow off steam for a few minutes before cranking out your next chapter – professional and personal networks are always right at your fingertips via telephone, text, email, Facebook, Twitter and other social networks. When calling an in-person meeting of the minds isn’t practical, an instantaneous virtual chat is the next best thing.
  3. Self-publishing is gaining steam and respect. Once regarded as the proverbial “red-headed stepchild” of the traditional publishing houses, self-publishing is quickly becoming the preferred publishing method for many authors – even ones who once published via traditional means. (Read veteran author Frank Schaeffer’s account of his decision to dump his publisher for Outskirts Press here.)
  4. You enjoy more creative/publicity opportunities than ever before. From NaNoWriMo in November to the scads of writing contests that open up at various other times of year, there’s no shortage of opportunities to display and promote your talent. And, thanks to the convenience of electronic submission, it’s easier than ever to get involved in multiple competitions and awards opportunities, or to promote your book to media outlets.
  5. There are more business freedoms than ever before. There was a time when traditional publishing was the only game in town. Writers desperate to publish were at the mercy of publishers who determined for them when and how their book would be released, what changes it would undergo and what deadlines they needed to meet, as well as how much of the proceeds they would be paid. As a self-publishing author, you chart your own course – and you keep your own profits!
  6. You have a “romantic” pastime or career most others only dream about. You create colorful people, lives and worlds of your own for the pleasure of others – and you do it in your pajamas in the comfort of home, or at a booth in the corner coffee shop (fully dressed, in that case!). Most people only wish they could do what you do. Your talent and your passion is a badge of honor.

These are indeed exciting times in which we live (and publish) – and for that, we are most grateful!

“I have used Outskirts Press for both books I have published. I plan to use Outskirts Press for the sequel when it is ready. I will use them for all subsequent books I will publish. I have found their services to be excellent and very professional. They deliver what they promise, are easy to work with, and their publishing prices are very reasonable. On a scale of one to ten, with ten being the best, I would rate Outskirts Press as ONE HUNDRED. They are that good! They are the best in the business and getting better each year.”

Damian Garcia: PhD Drug Smuggler by Chris Mosquera Virtual Book Tour

As an author in this economy, you have to come up with creative ways to market a self-published book. While book tours are a great way to connect with your readers, they aren’t the most affordable method of promotion. However, technology has made it possible for an alternative.

Take note from self-publishing Outskirts Press author, Chris Mosquera, who is taking his latest book, Damian Garcia: PhD Drug Smuggler, on tour – a virtual book tour, that is. He will be featured on several blogs over the weeks and months ahead so keep your eyes peeled to learn more about him and his book.

Luckily for us, Chris was kind enough to answer a few questions as the tour was getting started so that we can give you a sneak peek into the mind of the creator of Damian Garcia: PhD Drug Smuggler.

OP: Tell us a little bit about Damian Garcia: PhD Drug Smuggler. What is it about?

CM: Damian Garcia: PhD Drug Smuggler is a story about the international drug trade in opium and hashish by PhD students in New York City, circa 1972. It is also a story of family, friendships, love, and lifelong loyalties, and an extremely profitable international drug smuggling and money laundering operations, with financial returns in the hundreds of millions of dollars over time.

The family created a new kind of opium and hashish product they branded as O/H, and developed the investor-franchisee business model, still in use today. The demographics were graduate students, business and professionals, and the elite worldwide. O/H became the global quality drug of choice.

O/H grew to become the largest and most profitable international drug smuggling enterprise unknown to all but a few. Those that knew would never tell; that was the family code.

OP: Why did you decide to write this story?

CM: There is an interesting side bar to this book. A few years ago, I was cleaning out an old briefcase, and I found a wrinkled and yellowed legal pad with about 12 pages of handwritten notes, written in 1972.

Apparently, circa 1972, I traveled cross-country with a college friend in a broken down old car in the dead of winter, and wrote about the adventures. I decided to transcribe the notes verbatim, and then started playing around with the concepts and characters.

It just grew from there, and the characters started writing themselves and creating there own dramatic scenes. Of course, as characters develop, they grow and mature, and other interesting people creep into the scenes. It almost wrote itself.

Three years later, Outskirts Press published Damian Garcia: PhD Drug Smuggler.

I am working on book two. The adventures continue and the family grows, expands, and develops O/H Incorporated in to an international conglomerate with earnings exceeding most major corporations and some smaller nations.

OP: What types of readers would be interested in this story?

CM: Damian Garcia: PhD Drug Smuggler is a fast and fun read. The characters are funny, highly intelligent, and extremely devious, and they get into some strange adventures as they grow and develop into a lifelong family unit. It is a story of lasting friendships, love, family, and lifelong loyalties, and money. Lots of money!

It is the families Zen philosophies to help those in need, and O/H invests profits in social services and hospitals for the poor in India. O/H is a drug smuggling and money laundering company with a social and humanitarian conscience.

OP: What is special about your book?  What differentiates it from other books in the same category?

CM: Damian Garcia: PhD Drug Smuggler is unique. When you think of drug dealers, drug smugglers, and money laundering, you imagine bloodthirsty gangsters killing each other. Think Medellin Cartels or the Mafia.

Damian Garcia and family are highly intelligent and can outthink any drug cartel and international law enforcement agencies. The Family does not do gangster stuff, believing that brains always prevail over brawn. They fly below the radar and stay off the grid, preferring to hide in plain sight. Out of sight is out of mind.

They use their superior intellectual abilities and analytical reasoning to develop the world’s largest international drug smuggling and money laundering operation unknown to all but a few. Those that knew would never tell; that was the family code.

OP: Have you published any other books? Do you plan to publish more?

CM: In 2009 I published my first book with Outskirts Press. Is Organized Labor A Decaying Business Model? In this book, I analyzed labor unions from the perspectives of a business, and have concluded that organized labor is a decayed business model for multiple reasons.

Damian Garcia: PhD Drug Smuggler will be followed by a sequel, which I have started writing. Book 2 starts in circa 1978, and will examine the characters as they mature and grow. The opium and hashish business is now an international conglomerate with legitimate business assets and real estate holdings. Money laundering is the back end of the drug smuggling business, and The Family develops highly complex money laundering methods, using legitimate businesses, income producing real estate investments, as their personal ‘laundromats’.

OP: Thanks for your time, Chris! We look forward to learning more about you as you visit other bloggers!
