Gloria Smith has an Associate Arts degree from St. Petersburg College, a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Leo University, and a Special Studies certificate from Emory University Theology School. She’s been a teacher, a church hostess and wedding director, a counselor for abused women and children’s centers, and is the author of five children’s books. Her hobbies include photography, sewing, crafts, hiking, gardening, and rescuing and caring for dogs and cats.
A proud mother, grandmother, and storyteller, Gloria drew on her Finnish roots and vivid memories of childhood in Georgia to bring Finntown Girl to life. She dedicates the book to her family and all her childhood Finnish friends, whose strength and spirit echo in every chapter.
In her poignant debut novel Finntown Girl, author Gloria Smith brings readers deep into the heart of 1940s rural Georgia—into a Finnish-American settlement where faith, family, and resilience are the only means of survival. Inspired by real-life memories and the author’s lived experiences, this Young Adult historical novel is as emotionally charged as it is historically rich.

A brave girl. A quiet town. A voice that won’t be silenced.
At the center of the story is Lori, the eldest of eight siblings, whose strength and spirit shine as she cares for her family amidst poverty, prejudice, and a volatile home life. Her father’s alcoholism, the backdrop of World War II, and the sharp social divisions of the American South form a crucible for her character. Through it all, Lori’s hope, humor, and unshakable belief in a better future illuminate every page.
Gloria Smith’s evocative prose and eye for emotional truth make Finntown Girl a compelling read for fans of historical coming-of-age novels like The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson, or Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt. The novel also resonates with readers drawn to stories of survival and courage in the face of adversity.
As the novel unfolds across dusty highways, Finnish bathhouses, lightning storms, and tiny clapboard churches, readers come to know Lori’s world intimately—and root for her as she finds her voice and her dreams in a world that tries to hold her back.
