Linette Bruno recently announced the release of her newest book, A Spark in Time, Muriel Spark’s Narrative Voice, published by Outskirts Press. | Bruno explains the cyclical nature of time in our own lives and in the treatment, both technically and thematically, that Spark gives time in five of her most important works: The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, The Girls of Slender Means, The Driver’s Seat, Memento Mori and The Mandelbaum Gate.
In this year’s April 5th edition of The New Yorker, well known author and critic Thomas Mallon declared Muriel Spark “a writer whose narrative voice speaks for the past or present or future at her own whim and will.” In A Spark in Time, Bruno helps readers understand Spark’s ability to so actively involve her readers in her narratives by encouraging their participation in jumping from present to past to future in order to discover, detective-like, the parts of the past that are responsible for the events in the present and future.  Born Linette Alfreda Arthurton on Monserrat, the small Caribbean island now ravaged by the Soufriere Hills volcano, Linette Bruno has long been an admirer of the narrative technique of Muriel Spark. She made the “Theme of Time in the Works of Muriel Spark” the study of her research to obtain a Master’s Degree from the Sorbonne University in Paris in 1977.
