Luckily for us, Kelly was kind enough to answer a few questions as the tour was getting started so that we can give you a sneak peek into the mind of the creator of Sounds of a Coo.
OP: Tell us a little bit about Sounds of a Coo. What is it about?
KL: Sounds of a Coo is a collection of poems that I wrote inspired by a babies interpretation of their environment. Cooing is a babies first way of communicating, and I thought it would be unique and creative to give voice to those magnificent cooing sounds through adult words in expressive poems.
OP: Why did you decide to write this story?
KL: My son Samuel was 3 months old when I wrote Sounds of a Coo. When he would coo it would amaze me, and I would often wonder what he was trying to tell me. After pondering the wonderful coo; I formulated the idea of giving a voice behind these coos with adult poems. My son Samuel inspired me to try and create something unique that would put a twist on a babies coo.
OP: What types of readers would be interested in this story?
KL: I feel like anyone who has experienced mother or fatherhood, whether you are a new parent, grandparent, expecting parent, however your family is defined, I hope that readers can find relatable poems in the book that will bring a warm smile.
OP: What is special about your book? What differentiates it from other books in the same category?
KL: When I wrote the book six years ago,I initially thought that the publication process would have gone on course with no margin for setbacks. I was in for a very long journey with this book, almost giving up. I lost both parents in that six years and it changed so many things in my life that I lost sight of the dream of becoming a published author. However, I was able to prevail with my faith in God and my family. For me, the long journey has made me a stronger mother, writer, overall person. And when I sit down with my son and we take this book Sounds of a Coo off of his bookshelf, and read through it together, I am very grateful for the six years that it took for the book to be published.
I feel that this book is a unique and creative book from beginning to end. I wanted to give these babies in the book a voice, and even though they are adult words it creates a unique way to imagine what the babies coos would say if we could decode them.
OP: Have you published any other books? Do you plan to publish more?
KL: This is my first book to be published, however I do have another children’s book that is currently in the publication process and it is titled Loni Lemur Loses His Tooth, it will be coming soon!
