Facebook Fandemonium Volume 2 is Coming!

It’s that time of year again–when your New Year’s Resolutions predict 2012 will be the year you get published.

Outskirts Press can help!  Many of our published authors already know how satisfying it can be to publish with Outskirts Press, but many of our Facebook friends don’t–yet!  If you’re new to Outskirts Press, you can discover just how easy & fun it can be to publish by getting published for free in our next Facebook anthology.

Because our first Facebook anthology, Fandemonium, was so successful, we’ve decided to publish another! That’s right — Fandemonium Volume 2 is coming and you are invited to be a part of it!

Have you written a poem or short story that you would like to enter for a chance to be published for free in this new anthology featuring our talented Facebook friends?

Here’s how you can submit your work for consideration:

  1. Become an Outskirts Press Facebook friend by “liking” us on Facebook.
  2. Tell your writing friends to “like” us, too — so they can vote on your submission and enter their own.
  3. Beginning right now thru January 15, post your submission on your wall and share it so it posts on our wall, or comment directly to this posting or to our wall with your own submission and then share it.
  4. Read other submissions and “Like” and “Share” the ones you are fond of.

Submissions with the highest number of votes will be considered for inclusion in our upcoming Fandemonimum Volume 2 anthology. Submissions can be fiction, non-fiction, or poetry.  Facebook limits wall postings and comments to a limited number of words/characters, so if your submission is longer, use multiple sequential comments, or provide a link to the entire submission elsewhere, like on your Facebook profile/wall, or elsewhere on the Internet. The maximum word count allowed is 5000, but shorter entries are better.

You must be the sole copyright holder to the material you are submitting and you will retain 100% of the copyrights to it. You grant us a non-exclusive right to use the materials you submit through our social media channels and within the Facebook Anthology when it is published and distributed and you understand that royalties from the sale of Fandemonimum are not split among the contributors but rather go to the American Red Cross.

Yes, this is your chance to get published for free and help a good cause at the same time. Royalties from the sale of Fandemonium Volume 2 benefit the American Red Cross.  And you will be kept up-to-date on Facebook regarding the book’s production process and its availability when copies are for sale.

Over 100 Facebook members submitted content on the Outskirts Press “wall” and to Outskirts Press directly. Fans were asked to “Like” the submissions they liked the best.

Facebook fans then voted on the title of the anthology and the cover design of the book. More importantly, the social community was asked to vote for a charitable organization to receive royalties resulting from sales of this book. The American Red Cross received nearly 50% of the votes.

Proceeds from the sale of Fandemonium will be donated to the American Red Cross on behalf of Outskirts Press and its Facebook Fans.

“Outskirts Press was a dream come true. I never imagined that publishing a book would be taken care of by a publisher this much. I liked the one-on-one help my author representative gave me along the way. I also really liked the professional editing option. I recommend Outskirts to any type of author who needs a helping hand. Their prices are extremely fair as well.”

Vote on the Fandemonium Author Webpage

Fandemonium was published last week!  Congratulations to all the newly published Facebook authors with work appearing within the pages of this exciting anthology. The book is available for a 10% discount from our bookstore by clicking here, and will be available throughout our distribution-on-demand network (including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Ingram, Powells, Books a Million, and many, many more sales channels) within the next few weeks — probably even sooner!  Be sure to buy your copy now. Over $7 goes to the American Red Cross for every paperback copy sold.

Publication is not the end; it is just the beginning.  Outskirts Press makes the marketing journey just as fun as the publishing journey. Once published, your Publishing Center at Outskirts Press looks like this:

This is the Publishing Center control panel, where you can order books, order marketing services, and manage your marketing efforts, your free webpage, and your ebook through your “toolkit.” Your Publishing Center at Outskirts Press makes this all super easy. One of the first things we suggest our authors do is make their Author Webpage exactly the way they want it.

So, we need your help, since this is YOUR book.  Please vote on your preference for the color/layout for your Fandemonium author webpage by viewing the choices below.

As a Diamond book, Fandemonium has 16 different style/color variations to choose from, combining 4 color choices and 4 lay-out choices.   A published author can change or modify the look of their author webpage at any time by simply choosing from a drop down list of choices within their Publishing Center.  The Emerald lay-outs direct book sales directly to the author instead of to the online sales channels, which is perfect for some authors’ needs, but not for this book, so we’ll skip Emerald designs.  In fact, for the sake of brevity, we’ll narrow the choices down to 4 possible combinations below.  Please vote on your preference in the poll below. The winning webpage will be the one set for Fandemonium by the end of the week.

Diamond Blue
Diamond Red
Ruby Green

Sapphire Gray

Currently, the webpage is set to Diamond Blue while we wait for your votes, so you can click on that image and it will take you to the actual webpage for a closer look. All these samples, and the actual webpage, demonstrate the flexibility and power authors proficient in HTML have over the appearance of their author webpage.  And for those not as familiar with HTML, your webpage still looks great, and we have an HTML option to assist you in taking your webpage to the next level.

It’s time to vote!  Which webpage do you like best for Fandemonium?

Facebook Publishing Update – Fandemonium Printing

Among the many advantages of publishing with Outskirts Press is that all our authors maintain 100% control over their book and its content. This means the online galley review (or proofing) stage is very important. This is the time when the author reviews the print-ready files for the interior and cover of the book before authorizing publication.

Our social publishing experience with the Facebook anthology, Fandemonium, just completed that process.  The last update on this blog about Fandemonium summarized the entire process and concluded with the beginning of the proofing process:

Once the author’s proofing process is complete, the author either approves the book for printing, or submits some necessary changes via the convenient online form.  We had a number of small things we wanted to correct in the first proof before printing.  All authors receive 25 free interior changes and 10 free cover changes. The next round of galley proofs were uploaded to the Publishing Center and after reviewing them closely, we sent the book to print!

A number of things happen now that the files have been approved for publication.  We begin the distribution process through Ingram, which includes submitting all the digital information about the book (called “metadata”) so that when the book appears online through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Powells, and everywhere else, it has the proper information (annotation, BISAC codes, pricing, etc.).

At the same time, we work on any marketing services or products associated with the author’s book. In this case that includes a streaming 60 second book video trailer on the book’s webpage (all Outskirts Press books receive their own webpage), a standard press release announcing the publication of the book, and the creation and uploading of the Kindle edition to Amazon.

Fandemonium should be published within the week!  We’ll keep you posted.

Facebook Publishing “Fandemonium” Update

Speaking of Facebook publishing, here is a summary and update on our Facebook anthology, Fandemonium

1. In January, we invited members of our Facebook community to submit short works (poems, short stories, excerpts, etc.) to our Facebook Wall. Over a 100 members shared their creativity with us for a chance to be published for free in a Facebook anthology.

2. Next, we invited members of our social community on Facebook and this blog to vote on a title for the anthology. The majority of the votes (33%) voted to name the book Fandemonium: Selected Short Stories & Poems From Talented Facebook Writers

3. Next, our social community of writers and published authors voted for the charitable organization which would receive royalties from the sale of Fandemonium once it was published.  The vast majority (45%) chose The American Red Cross.

4. With the title and charity in place, it was time to design a cover.  We provided a number of different concepts, and received some valuable feedback and suggestions from our community, and then presented two final concepts for our Facebook fans to vote on.  60% voted for this one:

5. The pre-production process of Fandemonium has truly been a collaborative effort, showcasing all the flexibility and control all authors receive when they publish with Outskirts Press.   Our social community even got to vote on the pricing model by determining the retail price, profit, and discount for the book.   Over half voted for a retail price of $16.95 and a profit of $7.38 every time a paperback copy sells.

6. With the details set, Outskirts Press went to work producing the book according to the Facebook community’s wishes.    This is the time when our authors can sit back and relax and let us do what we do best.  Soon, the galley review process started.   This is the online digital proofing process where the files are presented to the author for review and either approval or requested changes.  During this review process, we submitted a number of minor corrections we wanted the interior formatter to make to the interior file through the easy, fast, hand’s on submission form.

7.  Final corrections and quality check (we call this process “premedia”) is taking place now.  We expect copies of Fandemonium to be available worldwide on sites like Amazon and Barnes & Noble before the end of this month. We’ll keep everyone posted.

8. When you’re ready to publish your book, check out all the high-quality writing, publishing, and marketing services available at Outskirts Press by clicking here.  Tell us which options and services you like by clicking on the “Facebook Like” buttons under every service listing.
