At Outskirts Press, we’re proud to spotlight authors whose books are driven by experience, determination, and a desire to make a difference. This month’s Featured Author is Soma Mukhopadhyay, author of Understanding Autism through Rapid Prompting Method, a guide that explores her innovative approach to educating and communicating with individuals with autism.
Soma’s journey began with her own son, Tito. After he was diagnosed with severe autism, Soma challenged expectations about what he could learn and accomplish. She developed the Rapid Prompting Method (RPM) as a way to help him learn to read, write, and communicate. Tito would eventually become a published author himself, while Soma dedicated her career to teaching her approach to autistic children and adults around the world.
Understanding Autism through Rapid Prompting Method
Published by Outskirts Press, Understanding Autism through Rapid Prompting Method introduces readers to Soma’s teaching methodology and provides parents and educators with a step-by-step guide to implementing RPM.
The book explores the ideas behind Soma’s approach while providing practical guidance for designing and implementing lessons for different types of learners. At its core is the belief that individuals with autism may possess academic abilities that are difficult to recognize through conventional methods—and that education and communication can open new opportunities for those learners.
For parents, educators, and others seeking to better understand alternative approaches to autism education, Soma’s book offers insight drawn from years of firsthand experience working with students.
From a Mother’s Determination to a Teaching Method
What makes Soma’s story particularly compelling is how personally her work began. Faced with predictions about what her son would not be able to accomplish, she instead focused on finding ways to reach him.
That determination ultimately grew beyond her own family. Soma has since worked with students from around the world and has dedicated herself to helping individuals with autism develop opportunities for learning and communication through RPM.
Her story is also an example of how an author’s personal experience and specialized knowledge can become the foundation for a book capable of reaching families, educators, and readers far beyond the author’s immediate community.
