ABOUT THE AUTHOR:Frederick Wulff
Frederick Wulff was born in Detroit and lived through the turbulent ’50s and ’60s with the struggles for civil rights. Some of his teenage years were spent in the deeply segregated South. Wulff is now a retired history professor, having taught at Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota. His Master’s degree in history was earned at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and he pursued his PhD in history from Texas Christian University (TCU). Interest in English history led to studies at the University of Oxford in England. Previously published books include Alexander McKee – the Great White Elk, Sunshine and Rain in the Mist of the Cold War, Speaking Out and Detroit: Past, Present and Future. Aside from a love of history, Wulff’s other passion is for travel, which led him to tour extensively into more than 80 countries.

Alexander McKee - The Great White ElkAlexander McKee – The Great White Elk
British Indian Agent on the Colonial Frontier
Alexander McKee, a mixed-blood British agent, was one of the few individuals in history able to unite Indians and exert unbelievable leadership on their behalf. When the War for Independence broke out between the Colonies and the British, McKee chose to remain loyal to his mother country, and assumed a major role on the American frontier. Because of his selfless devotion to the British and the Native Americans, he forfeited massive real estate and social standing when he left his Pittsburgh mansion to organize Indian raids on the American frontier, for which he was branded a traitor by the Continental Congress. This exciting and well-researched book sheds new light on McKee’s role in history as he maneuvered British frontier policy and promoted the interests of the beleaguered Native Americans. It’s little wonder that the Natives called McKee “The Great White Elk.”

Sunshine and Rain in the Mist of the Cold War: Reliving 1945-1955 Through Personal MemoriesSunshine and Rain in the Mist of the Cold War

An ancient proverb goes: “It takes both sunshine and rain to make a rainbow.” In a sense this book is an autobiography of a young man who experienced sunshine and rain throughout life that ended up at the end of a rainbow. The story spans ten years, from early teens to young adulthood, and relates the author’s perception of the world around him. He was wet behind the ears during the advent of the Cold War and the accompanying Red Scare; however, vivid memories of this period survived intact and are worthy of sharing. This journal takes the reader back to an interesting and unique time through accounts of unusual personal experiences, some stranger than fiction. At times some historical facts from various sources have been inserted to help buttress statements. Hopefully this book will assist others to live vicariously an exciting decade of history, 1945 to 1955.

Speaking OutSpeaking Out: Thoughts of an Independent Liberal Conservative Christian Teacher

The author’s independence is reflected not only in the political sphere (having never voted a straight ticket during his long life), but extends to the fields of sociology, education and religion. He believes many sociologists have gone off the deep end, and have made unwarranted conclusions in spite of evidence to the contrary. Sociology can be a very useful subject, but not when it is used to force an agenda. In the area of education, teaching methods and curriculum content tend to be trendy, but common sense and reflections should never be outdated. In the area of religion, churches understandably develop strongly held traditions, but these traditions should not be carved in stone. As a former Christian church worker the author contends only the Bible contains absolute truth, a reliable map that offers directions without glitches. Hopefully this book will generate discussion among its readers.

Detroit: Past, Present and FutureDetroit: Past, Present and Future

This book is about a wonderful city where I grew up and had come to love dearly. Much within the early chapters deals with everyday life in times long gone by. Old timers may find the little details will rekindle old memories and recall the ways thing had been in those early years. Life was much simpler then and the family was so central in our lives. Detroit was vibrant in so many ways. We cherished our distinctive neighborhoods, the excitement of city life and the many cultural activities available. Hopefully the many added photographs might help the readers transport themselves into this interesting story of life in Detroit from the Great Depression of the 1930s to the present. So much has changed in Detroit over the years. No doubt many will be saddened as the narrative switches to the decline of that once great city resulting from poor political leadership, the decline in industry, a terrifying increase in crime, an exodus of the middle class and the abandonment of neighborhoods. The mood changes in the closing chapter with the hope that the many noble efforts now being expended can meet the challenges and reverse the trend. Hopefully Detroit will overcome despair and strive to once again becoming a great city worth emulating.

Visiting Black AmericaVisiting Black America

This book is an attempt by the author to help others vicariously relive history by visiting the many sites of black history that are easily accessible to the average traveler. Yet this book is not just a directory of sites, but also a lively biographical approach to black history, that of itself, makes for interesting reading. The many photographs and illustrations help the readers to journey back into time; while the brief narrative approach makes for easy start-and-stop reading. Black history is laden with stories of tragedy, courage and feats of overcoming unbelievable obstacles. The author of this book believes that the blacks featured herein provide the desired “habitual visions of greatness,” a phrase associated with Alfred North Whitehead, that motivates us to be all that we can be (Whitehead, Aims of Education). In the book of Philippians 4:8 the inspired Apostle Paul tells us: “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” This book is about selfless lives of service to others.
