Summer MillerABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Summer Miller was born and raised in San Jose, Calif. She still lives in San Jose today with her husband, son, daughter and their golden retrievers.

Taking the FallTaking the Fall

After a horrible zipline accident at a Scout-O-Rama, Summer Miller finds she must quickly switch from a world of perfectly folded napkins and children’s birthday parties to become an alert warrior protecting her family from questionable medical care, ineffective therapists with shedding lap dogs and legal teams trained only to go for the win.

“The book is intense. It punches. Summer’s account of how a man’s careless attitude toward safety sends her family plummeting from innocence to tragedy is told with astonishing courage and energy … and humor. We know families where the dream turned into a nightmare. Summer models a sane approach to a crazy-making event. She went straight from innocent to warrior, hardly touching on orphan or martyr. She’s a hero, though, in the book, not claiming to be.” — Patricia Mitchell Lapidus, author of Sweet Potato Suppers and Gideon’s River

Each entry into the 2014 Benjamin Franklin Award program was evaluated by three independent judges. Each judge took either a design or an editorial focus. Most entries were assigned two editorial judges and one design judge. Some entries, however, like those in the Interior Design category, were assigned only design judges and some entries, like those in the Best New Voice category, were assigned only editorial judges. All entrants will receive a completed score card from each judge as a benefit of participation.
