OP: Tell us a little bit about The Drug Invasion of West Africa. What is it about?

AKK: The Drug Invasion of West Africa is about the impact of illegal drugs on West Africa and how it affects not only ordinary people but also West African governments, Western governments, the AU and the UN. These issues are explored in a fictional account that one reviewer, a former editor said was not fiction at all. As she put it, ”librarians will know where to put this book, and it will not be in the fiction category.”

OP: Why did you decide to write this book?

AKK: I decided to write to sound the alarm about this important problem. I believe this will be one of the most important problems that will confront West Africa in the next 10 years. The themes of the book and its concerns are echoed by a front-page story in the New York Times, Sunday, July 22, titled “The Drug War Shifts to Africa, Hub for Cartels” by Charlie Savage and Thom Shanker.

OP: What types of readers would be interested in this story?

AKK: African policy-makers, general African readers, Westerners interested in the drug trade and its impact on Africa, as well as Chinese interested in the history of the drug trade and China’s potential role in the fight against drugs.

OP: What is special about your book? What differentiates it from other books in the same category?

AKK: The amount of research and the ease of reading, as well of the immediacy of the characters that makes you feel, as one reviewer put it “as if they are your neighbors.”

OP: Have you published any other books? Do you plan to publish more?

AKK: Yes, I published an insider’s account of the 2008 Ghanaian election campaign titled, Chasing the Elephant into the Bush: The Politics of Complacency. I do hope to publish other books in the future.

OP: Thanks for your time, Arthur! We look forward to learning more about you as you visit other bloggers!
