Self Publishing Year in Review: Jan-Mar 2009

As 2009 winds to a close, let’s look back at some self publishing accomplishments and milestones that took place. Each quarter of 2009 was filled with noteworthy events and announcements, so let’s get right to it…

The first quarter of 2009 marked the first time video and social/video networking was used to visually communicate the importance of book covers for prospective self-publishing authors.  What they say is true – a picture really is worth a thousand words, and when it comes to communicating the benefit of having a fantastic book cover, a video is worth even more.

You’d better believe it – books are judged by their covers. After the months, years, or decades it took to write your book, don’t drop the ball when it comes to the cover.

No matter where you publish, the cover is one area you don’t want to skimp on. Watch the video to see what we mean…

Speaking of great covers, one best-selling author, Sally Shields, has parlayed her Outskirts Press publishing experience into national fame, appearing on countless radio and television shows and newscasts, including FOX news.

Book teasers debuted in the 1st quarter of 2009. Book teasers, an Outskirts Press exclusive, are fast, fun, and flashy publication announcements that can be distributed to all major video networking sites like YouTube.  Here’s an example of this new, cutting-edge way that savvy authors are announcing their works to video networking and social media sites. Also launching in the first quarter of 2009 were new full-color custom illustration styles for children’s books to complement the already extensive offering made available through Outskirts Press. Much like the custom covers, the illustrations are best displayed in video:

With award-winning illustrations and award-winning books, it became necessary for Outskirts Press award-winning self-published books to differentiate themselves. And thus the Award Recognition Cover Enhancement option was launched, with many award-winning authors adopting it immediately for their covers.

The first quarter came to an end with the annual EVVY Awards Banquet, hosted by the Colorado Independent Publishers Association, and once again, Outskirts Press came away with the most awards among the participating publishers.

Congratulations to all our successful authors and their accomplishments in the first quarter of 2009.
