Author Nathan Roberts is taking his latest book, I’ll Fix America Tonight (well, at least by the weekend) on tour – a Virtual Book Tour, that is, with Outskirts Press! Luckily for us, Nathan Roberts was kind enough to answer a few questions as the tour was getting started so that we can give you a sneak peek into the mind of the creator of I’ll Fix America Tonight (well, at least by the weekend).
OP: Tell us a little bit about I’ll Fix America Tonight (well, at least by the weekend). What is it about?
Nathan: My book proposes creative, revolutionary, apolitical, nonpartisan, and outside-of-the-box solutions to some of the societal, economic, and governmental problems hampering America as a country.
OP: Why did you decide to write this story?
Nathan: I am frustrated by people on both ends of the political spectrum constantly turning to government officials to “fix” their problems and those of our country. A country made for the people, by the people, and of the people should not turn to government. They should fix problems themselves.
OP: How did you get your book published?
Nathan: I went the self-publishing route through Outskirts Press.
OP: What types of readers would be interested in this story?
Nathan: Those who like humor and self-deprecation along with reasonable people who see the good in others instead of the bad first, those who reject political labels and can recognize the good parts of left-wing and right-wing ideas/policies while rejecting the disastrous and immoral ones.
OP: What is special about your book?
Nathan: In addition, my book is a buffet of ideas. When you’re at a buffet, you don’t have to take every food item. Doing so actually might lead to health problems. I mention this in the introduction. If a person dislikes one idea, they do not necessarily have to discard the whole work. I propose creative solutions that have never been tried before but which can give all people on the political spectrum at least a part of what their agenda states while doing what is more important than power grabs; solving problems.
OP: What differentiates it from other books in the same category?
Nathan: Political commentary and societal critique as genres are sorely lacking in humor and suffering from an overabundance of self-importance. I wanted to make people laugh along the way, because I refuse to take myself so seriously. In addition, most books of this nature are written by pundits, former politicians, and self-styled experts. They are not written by the people who are in the trenches, solving problems every day. Thomas Paine puts it best when he says: “Of more worth is one honest man to society and in the sight of God, than all the crowned ruffians that ever lived.”
OP: Have you published any other books?
Nathan: Yes, my first book is entitled Other-Land and the Extraordinary Birthdays. It is a young adult fantasy that is an homage to the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis; my favorite authors. My second book is entitled Randomedy. It is a comedic novel that is a random mishmash of silly plots (some of which are satirical of blockbuster movies and novels) in which I set out to prove that it’s possible to be funny without being vulgar or profane. It is also intensely personal. I wrote it at the time of my divorce when I was so discouraged and depressed by life circumstances, I thought I had lost my ability to be funny anymore.
OP: Do you plan to publish more?
Nathan: Yes, I plan to publish more books. I am a busy single father with two businesses and a full-time job to handle, but I do intend to write more books if given the chance. I’d love to sit at the side of a lake for seventeen years and churn out a monumental masterpiece like The Lord of the Rings, but if given seventeen years off work, I’d probably end up watching Netflix most of the time anyway.
