How to Use Author Copies

If you think book hardcopies are a thing of the past, think again! Not only are readers still gobbling up hardcopy books via print-on-demand, but authors and marketing pros need them more than ever. It’s always smart to take advantage of discounted pricing when you can, but it’s especially wise to stock up on author copies. Why, you might ask? There are several great reasons, besides the low price, why it pays to always have copies on hand. Here are our Top 3 ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ for using your author copies to your advantage:

  1. Why: Those die-hard hardcopy fans. Oh, how we love our eReaders! It is arguably the hottest trend in publishing these days. However, don’t underestimate the residual thirst for a good old-fashioned hardcover book. They still have their place among those of us who adore the feel, smell and raspy sound of freshly minted pages. Since folks who love the heft of a “real” book tend to pick up a copy in the most literal sense, you’ll be better equipped to take advantage of impulse buys if you have a hardcopy handy when the opportunity arises. How: Keep your trunk stocked. You’ll be surprised how often an opportunity to sell presents itself in a typical day. The Post Office, the doctor’s office, lunch with your buddies, family gatherings – there’s always something that puts you in proximity with readers (as in potential book buyers). Why hastily scribble a website or ISBN for them to (hopefully) look up when they get home, when you can offer them a copy right there and then? Keep a stack in your car trunk, diaper bag or briefcase so they’re always handy when the opportunity presents itself.
  2. Why: Because you can’t sign an ebook. One unique feature of a hardcopy is that you can instantly add value to it without any additional costs – with an autograph. Autographed hardcopies are often cherished by their owners. Whether or not the signature adds any resale value to the book, an autographed copy usually holds more sentimental value for the buyer. How: Sign ahead. When possible, sign your hardcopy in the presence of the buyer. However, if sales are really taking off, you can still offer the benefit of autographed copies. Sign several ahead of time in your spare time and keep them ready for buyers who may need that little extra nudge to purchase. Make an effort to sign every hardcopy you sell; just remember to keep a few “clean” copies for buyers who prefer a pristine product.
  3. Why: Bookshelves are calling. The past few years may have been rough on the large retail booksellers, but bookstores haven’t gone the way of the dodo just yet. Most cities still have several local, regional and national bookstores that would be nothing without actual books to place on their shelves. How: Make your case. The local, mom-and-pop bookstores are your best bet for snagging a coveted spot on the shelf. Start with the city you grew up in, or the city you currently call home, and reach out to the small, independent bookstores there. Let them know you’re a hometown guy/gal and that you’d be proud and honored to be part of their store’s offerings. Package a hardcopy of your book with a press kit and a small thank-you gift, as well as a personal note.

Take advantage of your bulk-buying power and stock up! If you heed and take advantage of selling and marketing opportunities as they arise, what you spend pre-purchasing your author copies will more than pay for itself in additional sales.

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT & SUCCESS STORY

“I could not have been more pleased with every aspect of working with Outskirts Press. Now, I have to still my old bones (85) and sell, sell, sell!”

Frank W. Dressler, a retired association executive, has volunteered since 1995 with two international organizations in Russia, the Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Romania and Bosnia and the Republic of Georgia, and through his church, in Zimbabwe, Nepal and the Republic of Georgia. He lives with his wife Winifred in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.

Mr. K. and the Super is the emotionally moving, sometimes hilarious recollections of a newly married ex-GI, recently enrolled at Columbia, of his service as “super” of two New York City apartment buildings in the early 1950’s. The two buildings were a bubbling cauldron of emotions, ambitions and high jinks ruled by Mr. K, a Polish emigrant landlord actively conspiring to overthrow the communist regime of his homeland. Mr. K sought to control his domain with a lease whose “thou shalt not” clauses put the Ten Commandments to shame…but utterly failed to tame the assorted energies and desires of his more creative tenants. Their antics resulted in a fishing expedition that culminated in a memorable roof top fight of feral cats; and through their real or imagined sex lives, triggered a LIFE goes to a Party feature story in their building.

Do You Have a (Self-Publishing) Dream? 5 Steps to Making Your Dream a Reality

Martin Luther King Jr. had many dreams that seemed lofty in the climate of his day. Step by step, many of them have come to pass. So, in honor of MLK’s dream, Outskirts Press would like to help self-publishing authors Outskirts Press Self-Publishing Servicesrealize their own dreams.

When you’re at the beginning of the self-publishing process, having an actual book in hand can seem unattainable. That’s because we all tend to view the finished project — which is a big deal — and fail to see all the little, completely doable tasks that make up the finished project. So, we’re here to tell you this: Dream small!

You’ve heard the expression, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Don’t think of the publishing journey as a single, thousand-mile trip. Think of the easy steps you can take to make that self-publishing journey:

  1. Write on schedule. Whether your goal is a daily one or a Sunday marathon while eveEbook Packageryone else in the house is watching football, regularity is your best friend. You don’t have to shoot for a massive page count, either; every small step you take gets you closer to the finish.
  2. Envision a finish line. Know what you’re working toward. Do you know how your book will progress and how it will end? If you don’t, write an outline, first and foremost. It doesn’t matter if you end up straying from your original vision. Just knowing there’s a path to follow will help you take that next step.
  3. Get your other “ducks” in a row. Start thinking about, and making arrangements for, elements of a published book besides the writing: cover art, formatting, interior illustrations, publicity, etc. Line up someone to create the book cover art, or draft a few ideas to give to your publisher; put your manuscript in the proper format; start pre-publicizing your book on your Facebook page and Twitter feed. All these things will need to be done sooner or later, but if you get a jump on them early, your book just seems more “real.” That visualization will motivate you to follow through on the writing and all the steps to self-publishing that follow.
  4. Publish/market on schedule. “Then End” isn’t really the end when it comes to self-publishing; it’s the beginning of a new phase of authorship — selling your book. Just as writing requires planning and discipline, so does the publishing and marketing processes. Set up a schedule of things you need to accomplish to get your book sold: contact the publisher, send in your manuscript, choose a cover, order hardcopies and electronic versions, send out custom press releases, put together a press kit, and contact the media (TV, radio, newspaper, book reviewers, etc.). Resolve to take one or more of these steps each week to get visibility (and added sales) for your book.
  5. Ask for help. Despite the name, self-publishing doesn’t have to be done in solitude — there’s Ghostwritingassistance for just about anything that stumps or overwhelms you. There are specialized artists who can create an eye-catching book cover, marketing experts with dozens of tricks up their sleeves to boost book sales, publishing insiders who can help you snag high-profile interviews — even professional ghostwriters to take your compelling plot and bring it to life!

Yes, publishing a book is a big dream, but the small steps you take to achieve that dream are very much in your power!

Do you have a self-publishing dream? Make your dreams come true — we’ll show you how!

Seven Advantages of Having an E-book Format

Electronic Book imageSelf-publishing authors have more formats and more methods through which to get their books into readers’ hands than ever before. Yet, there’s more competition than ever for a piece of the bookselling pie. So, how do you cut through the clutter and get your book read in the quickest, most convenient way possible?

While many readers still prefer good old-fashioned hardcopies – and you should keep copies of your book on hand at all times for last-minute sales and marketing opportunities – e-books are growing ever more popular among readers and writers alike.

If you’re new to electronic books, consider these seven advantages that an additional e-book format (or multiple ebook formats) may have for you:

  1. Better for the environment. Sell an e-book, save a tree! (By the way, this is the major advantage of print-on-demand paperbacks and hardbacks, too; by printing hardcopies only when needed, you reduce or eliminate the risk of having to dispose of unsold units while respecting the planet).
  2. Easy to update. You can change or correct your ebook at any time and the updated version becomes available quickly and conveniently. Just like print-on-demand books.
  3. Zero inventory. Gone are the days of storing thousands upon thousands of dusty books in your basement or garage. Someone buys your e-book edition only when they want it, with zero hassle for you.
  4. Instant availability. E-books can be downloaded immediately, allowing readers instant gratification when they click to order your book.
  5. Less expensive. Lower production costs means lower upfront costs for you, and the page count has no impact on the retail price, which means you can price that 400 page book at the $9.95 ebook price you want, thus encouraging more sales – and more potential profit.
  6. Easier to share. E-books allow you to provide advance promotional copies to news outlets and reviewers more quickly and at a lower cost to you.
  7. Easier to publish. Writing a book can be difficult. With Outskirts Press, publishing paperbacks and hardbacks and easy. And now with popular e-book formats, publishing that same book across multiple platforms is a snap. You’ve already written the book; make sure it’s available everywhere it can be.

Consider e-books as one of many tools in a book marketing strategy that also includes print-on-demand. You can still choose to sell hardcopies in online and brick-and-mortar bookstores, but it’s nice to know you have attractive alternatives.

It was a dream come true. I would like to thank Outskirts Press for simplifying the process and for reminding me often enough that I am in control. I will publish with Outskirts again.”

Iyabo Williams grew up in Lagos, Nigeria. She lives outside San Francisco with her husband, children and grandchildren.

At the age of eight, Aisha Praisso, alongside her great grandmother, became a victim and a rescuer of many during the Nigerian civil war of 1967 between the Hausas in the north and the Ibos in the east. The tales from the war are sporadic and many of the stories are still left untold. Aisha, a survivor and self-proclaimed motor-mouth, would not broach the subject unless her life depended on it. But it did, and her whispers became loudly heard. Born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria and raised by her maternal great grandmother, Aisha had a happy life until the Biafran war bulldozed its way into her idyllic home and turned it into a torture chamber. Her innocence was stolen by an Unknown Soldier while her guardian could only stand by and watch. Though Mr. Braithwaite, a family friend and English merchant sea captain, had rescued her and her great-grandmother from the worst by arranging for their escape to Lagos, it was already too late for Aisha; she had been branded for a lifetime of abuse. When things go awry in an abusive relationship, she finds herself in a state of utter hopelessness after being arrested on charges connected to her past boyfriend. It took her fourteen years…to sort through her pain, including the self-inflicted ones and find the courage to tell her story. Fortunately, her luck turns for the better as she begins to let go and start to re-live her life again.

The 5 Benefits of Print-On-Demand Publishing

These days, self-publishing authors have more formats and more methods to get their books into readers’ hands than ever before. Yet, that means there’s more competition than ever for a piece of the bookselling pie. So, how do you cut through the clutter and get your book read in the quickest, most convenient way possible?

In the age of ebooks, it’s easy to forget that print-on-demand (POD) publishing shares just as many advantages, making it super convenient for self-publishing authors to get published and start building their readership. Many readers strongly prefer holding a “real” book in their hands and as an author, there is no substitute for holding a real copy of YOUR book in your hands. If you’re new to print-on-demand self-publishing, consider these five advantages that this publishing process may have for you:

  1. It better meets your production needs. Print-on-demand allows authors to produce books in small quantities as needed, even one at a time if necessary, and the publishing timeframe is weeks instead of years.
  2. Lower upfront costs. For self-publishing authors who don’t have a lot of cash up front for a massive print-run, print-on-demand is a lifesaver.
  3. Zero inventory. Forget piles of books collecting dust in your basement or garage – those days are long gone. Zero inventory means zero hassle. A customer orders your book, we take care of printing, delivery, and sending royalty checks.
  4. Better condition of books. The “fresher” the print, the better the odds that the copy will get to its final destination in pristine condition.
  5. Better for the environment. By printing hardcopies only when needed, you reduce or eliminate the risk of having to dispose of unsold units.

Consider print-on-demand as one of many tools in a book distribution strategy that also includes ebook formats. While you can still opt for a large print run to reduce your per-unit cost, it’s nice to know there are attractive alternatives.
