Outskirts Press Launches 4th Annual Fandemonium Facebook Anthology

Who doesn’t love spring? It’s a time of warmth and renewal. In honor of this season, we’re renewing something that’s quickly becoming a much-anticipated spring tradition: Fandemonium. We’re all set to take submissions for Fandemonium Volume 4, and we want your inspired works!

For three years now, Fandemonium has brought Outskirts Press Facebook fans together to experience the joy of publishing with us first-hand, while benefiting a great cause along the way. We’re inviting our Facebook community to submit poetry, short stories, excerpts, recipes or anecdotes for free publication in the annual Outskirts Press Facebook anthology, Fandemonium, now through April 30, 2014.

Do you have a short story, poem or other short work you’d like to enter for consideration? Getting published in the Facebook Fandemonium is simple:

  • Submit your work as a regular “Status Update” on your own Facebook page.
  • Tag Outskirts Press in your Update (type @Outskirts somewhere in the body of the message — the page should pop up in a drop down message and then select it).
  • Make sure the privacy setting is set to “Public.”
  • Submit your entry before April 30, and tell all your friends to vote for your submission by “liking” it on Facebook.

The submissions with the highest number of likes will be considered for inclusion in Fandemonium Volume 4. Submissions can be fiction, non-fiction or poetry, and entries under 5,000 words will be considered first.

The result of this unique crowdsourcing effort is a collection of superior writing from the Outskirts Press Facebook community, the profits of which provide much-needed funding to a worthy cause. Proceeds from the sale of the 2014 Fandemonium collection will be donated to the American Red Cross on behalf of Outskirts Press and its Facebook fans.

To submit your work for Fandemonium Volume 4 now, go to Facebook.com/outskirtspress.

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT & SUCCESS STORY

“My decision to publish was spontaneous. I had no idea what was involved and just hoped for the best. Throughout the experience, my questions were answered promptly and what I was unclear about was explained. Because I self-published, I had to make many decisions, which meant I had to be involved and vigilant. The end result turned out better than I could have hoped for. Thanks to Outskirts Press, I was able to make my dream come true.”

Christina Steiner lives in Southern California. She is the mother of two daughters who loved illustrated children’s books when they were growing up. The Sad Tree and Pronuba was inspired by Christina’s visit to the Mojave Desert where she became fascinated by the Joshua Tree and the desolate environment in which it flourishes.

The desert is a lonely place for Joshua, a tree who has never seen another tree like him. He asks everyone in his environment to help him find a companion…but although the desert loves him, nobody can help. Things change for Joshua one beautiful spring night when a tiny moth comes to visit. This exquisite story about the life-cycle relationship between the Joshua Tree and the Pronuba Moth will delight readers of all ages.

Celebrate National Poetry Month With These Book Marketing Tips

Roses are red, violets are blue…I can finish this poem, I bet you can, too!

April is National Poetry Month and a perfect time to market a poetry book or even write one of your own if you haven’t already.  Once you have published your volume of poetry, these 5 tips can help you effectively market it:

  1. Know your audience. Understand who your readers are and where they are. Find ways to connect with your target readers.
  2. Create a website. Create your own professional website for your work. Include samples of your poetry  and your biography. Creating a blog helps to move you up in the search engine rankings.
  3. Enter poetry contests. Submit your work to various contests locally, regionally and even nationally. Winning, or even simply entering, contests draws attention to you and to your work. If possible, include your biography and your website.
  4. Promote on social media outlets. The best way to spread the news about your poetry and you as a writer is through social media. Join poetry and writing groups through Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
  5. Engage in poetry forums. Join a poetry forum or poetry related website to share your work with other poets and writers. Be sure to engage others and invite them to participate in your poetry. Any time you post, be sure to include your website address.

Keep in mind that there are many ways to promote and market your book. These are only a few of the effective areas. Celebrate National Poetry Month in April and start writing!

Poetry is a great way to inspire images through spoken word in the minds of the readers. Do you want to publish a beautiful, high-quality, professionally-formatted volume of poetry? Outskirts Press offers an exclusive Poetry Formatting Kit, which is the fastest, easiest way to literally “cut’n’paste” your poetry into a pre-formatted document that is already formatted and ready for printing!

Self-Publishing Book Spotlight: ‘The Pony Principles’ by Keith Elkins

Outskirts Press was founded and grown upon the principle of helping creators realize their greatest writing ambitions. Self-publishing a book is a major undertaking, and we’re proud of the work our authors do to create amazing literature and see it through to publication. So, it’s with pride that we take a moment each week to recognize one of the many authors of whom we’re so very proud in our Self-Publishing Book Spotlight.

This week we shine our  spotlight on self-published author Keith Elkins and his book, The Pony Principles: Lessons in Optimism Because of Adversity.

In The Pony Principles: Lessons in Optimism Because of Adversity, Outskirts Press author Kpony principleseith Elkins takes the metaphor of the pony from the positive, childlike perspective of anticipating the gift of a pony for one’s birthday and expands that idea into four simple, innovative principles by which one can make things happen in one’s life despite the influence of negative people or negative circumstances.

No matter what is occurring around a person, author Elkins writes, there is always a path to one’s goals if one is committed and on purpose. What one focuses on, expands. His four pony principles help one achieve the focused optimism necessary to carry through to one’s goals. One has to see the pony, feed the pony, train the pony and, finally, one has to ride the pony.

“Seeing” the proverbial pony is the start of one’s journey and involves concentrating on one’s goals, clarifying one’s vision and purpose and thereby strengthening one’s belief. In this first step one must also overcome any limiting notions one might have about one’s talent or one’s potential.

Elkins’ second principle, feeding the pony, concentrates not simply on the nurturing of one’s mind, body and spirit, but on the robust nourishing of them with a new way of processing one’s life experiences through “lifetime learning” and through exposure to people, places and ideas that help a person grow.

“Training” the pony, step three, is the work, the discipline, the practice necessary to actually make a lifelong change. If one’s life is worth living, it is worth training for, the author says, and training is, simply put, work.

Finally, in step four, one “rides” the pony. One mounts the animal and gives it a little kick. Rather than merely sitting around, looking at and daydreaming about what one wants, one actually gets on the pony and follows through to one’s goals with action. One moves forward with commitment and passion.

One then succeeds.
