About the Author:

Chef Jonathan Ho has experienced cuisines from all over America and enjoyed local favorites in big cities and small towns, from Hawaii and Alaska to Texas and New England. He has committed his career to celebrating the US culinary melting pot, the union of world cuisines that define modern American fare. He believes in cooking with a no-holds-barred approach to ingredients and a passion for diversity. His food offers unexpected flavors, naturally vibrant colors, and a new taste experience with every dish.

That’s the Spirit: Creative Sautéing with Beer, Wine and Liquor

As a Chef of world fusion, Jonathan Ho is always seeking out new ingredients, inventing out-of-the-ordinary recipes and testing the limits of food fusion. One thing that he has discovered is that the many colors, aromas and tastes available through spirits are often overlooked…from sweet fruit liqueurs to spiced rums, from dry Chardonnay to sweet Port, and from light beer to bitter Irish stout. Beneath the harsh alcohol, each beverage has it’s own distinct symphony of flavor and aroma.

Placid Hollow: A Walter Hudson Mystery

Federal Judge T. Franklin “Teddy” Braxton was beloved by his family and admired by his peers. His immense wealth had put him at the pinnacle of New York City’s elite political and social worlds. So who murdered him in cold blood? Perhaps it was the nearly naked young woman found standing over his body with a .45 caliber pistol in her hand. Or perhaps not…. Detective Lieutenant Walter Hudson is in over his head, and he knows it, as he immediately begins to receive intense pressure to solve the case from both Mayor Deborah Kaplan and Police Commissioner Sean Donahue, both personal friends of the Judge. And he may be getting in over his head personally as well, as the judge’s beautiful daughter, Virginia, starts giving him more help than he’s looking for. He’ll need all the help he can get from Leviticus Welles, now a rising star in the NYPD’s Intelligence Division, to guide him through the maze of Teddy Braxton’s life as well as the tangle of his own emotions. But one thing Walter knows from the start is that there’s nothing placid at all about Placid Hollow.

Self-Publishing Author Spotlight: Sam Oputa

At Outskirts Press, Inc., we take great pride in celebrating the work of our successful self-publishing authors, and we do so each week through our Self-Publishing Author Spotlight. This week we highlight self-publishing author Sam Oputa, who has published 3  successful titles with Outskirts Press.

Learn more about Sam Oputa, his background and his published works through this week’s Self-Publishing Author Spotlight.

About the Author:

Raised in an environment where religion was never forced, Sam Oputa became a Protestant, then later a practicing Catholic with an interest in religious studies. He attended Bronx Community College and Baruch College of the City University of New York. He also received an MBA in 2005.

Why Was Man Created?: War of the Gods- Yahweh Vs Satan

Before they re-engineered man, they were living here on earth by themselves for eons of years. They decided to “let Us create man.” But WHY? Most people have at one time or another asked themselves, Why am I here? What is my purpose? It’s a difficult and profound question, and a common conclusion is that we were created for God’s glory. This may be true, but it is not logical. There must be a far more specific reason for our creation. This work is a navigation and connection of dots to understand creations/evolution through the sciences, psychology, geology, anthropology, religion and mostly through the Holy Books which harbor mountain of misunderstood scientific evidences. This work did not shy way from misunderstood myths of the Annunakis who some know as the watchers or the angels. I will want to think that the sciences in the Holy Books are either not understood for what they are or are simply misinterpreted. This author borrows extremely from narrations in the Holy Books as recorded in narratives and from other sources as narrated in folklore, other authors and geological/anthropological findings. This book redefines days and nights especially when applied to creation. “And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.” Genesis 1:5 describes the first day as happening even before the earth is formed. This tells you immediately that The All-Powerful Creator is not stating earthly days. How can He, when the Earth was not in existence? The Book of Genesis if properly read and understood, contains information most people will never see. You cannot even start to think about something that you don’t understand but when such puzzles are explained, they no longer appear to be mysteries. Just like the Book started as “In the Beginning…” so also the Book has given us “In the end…” It is hard to see this information just like it was difficult to find the Big Bang in those Biblical first few words. Though, the book of genesis was not the big bang of this book, that we gleaned new information from it, is satisfaction enough. A simple arithmetic manipulation brings to light some hidden information in the book of Genesis. The simple arithmetic was performed in this book but you need to read the details and apply it to fully grasp how it works. “Why are we created?” will also explain in simple terms why man was created and for what reason and purpose. You will be shocked to finally come to terms as to why Man was created.

God is Not Enough, Messiah Needed: Messiah Ascends to Heaven

If it was explained to you that that Light that shone in the night and transformed into cloud in the day which helped lead the Israelites in the wilderness day and night out of Egypt was an aircraft, you might exclaim- Ah ha! If it was explained to you that the star that led the three wise men to Jerusalem was not a star but an aircraft, an alarm bell might go off. If it was explained to you that Prophet Ezekiel was describing an aircraft in Chapter 10, you will say, how did they know. They were even different aircraft models. When Prophet Elijah was taken to heaven, did you think the angels did it? Of course, an aircraft was involved. And when Prophet Enoch explained the beings he witnessed and their manner of travels- fast movement using the aircraft, his book was not included in the Bible. Our forefathers were not stupid. So, who were the operators of those sophisticated and awesome machines? It was difficult for the prophets to come up with the vocabulary needed to describe what they saw. Let us see if given such an assignment if we can do any better. Let us see, if your assignment was to write what you were observing for future generations like those prophets did. Think for a moment what a daunting job that would be. First, your ability to describe what you are seeing is difficult and on a verge of near impossible. It is so difficult that your descriptions even if it appears well phrased and okay to you, what are the chances that the future generations could make sense of your descriptions? This is the dilemma of all the messengers of that time. The Gods were wowing them with technologies never been seen or understood. The prophets saw what they saw and wrote what they saw. The constraints are that we are assigning interpretations to these recorded events not applying logic, science, texts etc. You know that a star will not move and stop and resume movement again like the Bible described. Science made that perfectly clear. To ignore science here to help you think logically is the problem why many people pretend to believe by faith. There was something in the sky moving quite alright but it was not a star. It was the best way the writers could describe it. What was moving up in the sky? Many people believe what they believe because it is generally accepted. Some only accept interpretations that are confirmed by their version of The Holy Books, and they consider any use of reason in religious matters to be misleading and impermissible. In God Is Not Enough–a groundbreaking and thought-provoking book–the author attempts to deconstruct the puzzles surrounding the concept of God. Who is He? And are these questions really unanswerable?

Faith or Reason: Can Science Silence God?

They used air-crafts. Our forefathers likened such technologies to airships. The Bible mentioned the airships. Not once, not twice but they were mentioned in the book of Genesis. Prophet Ezekiel also told us about these airships. Did you miss the biblical mentions too? The Gods were not hiding themselves from our forefathers. They grew plants and tamed animals. The book of Enoch explained it. In some places in the Bible, the ships were described as moving stars. Fortunately, we now know that stars does not move and stop as was described. All the above were science and technology. Not Faith. If they moved by means of airships, would that make them omnipresent or omniscience? Science and technology- yes but omnipresence– the quality of being everywhere– is not one of their characteristics. We as humans assigned those characteristics to the “Gods” Some people believe that the Earth is 4.6 billion years by evidence. Some believe the earth is 6000 years by faith. Genesis 1:2 And the earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. That verse 2 alone if understood puts paid to arguments that there is no God. It also describes the form of transportation and arrival of these God(s) via an aircraft christened “spirit of God” that hovered on the surface of the waters as there was no land to land. That verse, if understood puts paid to the argument that there were no intelligent beings. That verse confirms that there were intelligent beings existing long before the earth formed. The name of the Gods’ aircraft will come to play again in the book of prophet Ezekiel and described again in the Book of Enoch. Do not forget that science puts earth at approximately 4.6 billion years and 13.7 billion years for the universe. What this means is that there were intelligent beings billions of years ago before earth formed. It is therefore wise to logically assume that their knowledge and experience far exceeds our still developing intelligence, discoveries and experience. It is also logical to assume that if man was to live just 4.6 billion years, our smarts, discoveries and experiences will far outpace the level where we are at this moment. Genesis verse two therefore is a description of initial moments when the intelligent beings landed on earth’s atmosphere.

In 1920s New York, the streets hold no secrets—if you’ve got the right connections.

New York City, 1921. “Get too close to the Mafia and you’ll be nothing more than a puppet with the Syndicate pulling the strings.” It’s not the first time Joey Batista, private eye, has heard this warning, but this time he’s honor-bound by his family’s ties to Castellano, the neighborhood mob boss. When Castellano brings in Joey to solve a local waterfront murder, then sends him to Detroit to help settle a Mafia power struggle, Joey realizes his hopes of building a nice, quiet PI business with his gorgeous partner, Jackie, are dashed. If that weren’t enough, he’s also being pursued by a killer with a blood vendetta, an unscrupulous DA, and a pair of notorious hit men. When Castellano’s family is threatened, Joey is drawn deeper into the inner workings of the underworld, pitting him against a foe so deadly that even Joey’s wartime skills as an assassin might not save him. As the neighborhood braces for a Mafia standoff, Joey must decide once and for all where he stands.

perf8.500x11.000.inddThe Adventures of Patty-Cat and Kittle

What do bouncing, biting, unemployable sheep dogs, sniping spiders, irritated ants, and getting-under-everyone’s-skin, Cousin Fred (addicted to catnip and trouble), plus Billy-Bom-Tom-Cat all have in common? They’re the ones Patty-Cat and Kittle, two adventurous little kittens, meet and deal with, and sometimes it’s not easy! Patty-Cat and Kittle came to live with Angel at 112 Liver Lane, and life is far from dull. Two sheep dogs, Hal and Sam, come snarling down the street, snapping at each other and when Kittle tries to stop them, they turn on her. She suggests they could be nicer to each other, but alas, peacemakers are never appreciated. Off they go, snarling and biting, hoping to fight Hector the goat.

Cousin Fred comes for a visit and disrupts the whole household. Nothing he does turns out right. He spills gingerbread batter all over the kitchen, breaks things, disappears and refuses to do chores. Fred meets a disreputable ruffian called Billy-Bom-Tom-Cat who leads him to a catnip café. Before he is totally beat up, Kittle comes to the rescue and escorts him home. But Fred finds music, banging on the piano, and finally is sent to music school.

cover-3The Further Adventures of Patty-Cat and Kittle
The goblins started the trouble. From their viewpoint, anyone entering Grants Wood was fair game. But tell that to Mr. Billy-Bom-Tom-Cat, and later to Chester… It all started with the ice festival. Patty-Cat and Kittle, who lived with their mother, Angel, at 112 Liver Lane, and their friends, Chester and Susie went to the Ice Festival. It was held each year on the meadow next to Grants Wood, where a pond had been frozen over and where ice bat-ball was played. Colorful booths with games of chance and food items were displayed. While the kittens were there they saw Mr.-Billy-Bom-Tom-Cat being escorted to the edge of the meadow, who then slowly entered the woods. When the kittens heard that fairies were also to be found there, but never seen, the four kittens went exploring Grants Wood. Unfortunately Chester was captured by hostile goblins, but the fairies came to the rescue. Two rambunctious and irresponsible sheep dogs, a nasty black widow spider, the talented Cousin Fred, now in music school, other friends and families of the four kittens all come and go and play a part in the lives of all those who live in Katville. Won’t you join us and read all about the exciting lives of Patty-Cat and Kittle and their friends.

The annoying resident spider, Miss Wilma Weaver, likes to stir up things, and the two sheep dogs, Hal and Sam, romp through the season, as joyfully and stupid and rambunctious as ever. Two new kittens come to town, one unhappy feisty one and another who was cruelly abandoned. Miss Maisey and Miss Katty-Kat, sisters who live next door at 114 Liver Lane, receive an unexpected but cherished Christmas gift and the animals all gather for the solemn Midnight event. If you are curious as to how the two sisters become kind and happy, (quite an about-face), or if you want to find out how everything ends, or if you just want a good read, try this book.
