Interview with bestseller Irv Sternberg

When bestselling author Irv Sternberg published No Laughing Matter with Outskirts Press, he was already a well-established writer in the Denver community. He leveraged that success to turn No Laughing Matter into a bestseller, which bred further success for his recently published hardback, Neptune’s Chariot, which is currently sharing time on the Denver bestseller list along with Janet Evanovich, James Rollins, and James Patterson.

Mr. Sternberg, tell us about your first book…

I published my first novel, Deadly Passage, at the age of 66 with a traditional publishing house and optioned it for film. Five years later, I independently self-published my second novel, Sakura’s Stratagem, at a significant cost. Both books earned me a spot on the bestseller lists of both of Denver’s daily newspapers.

Why did you turn to Outskirts Press for your third book?

Outskirts Press came into my life at exactly the right time. After years of trying to publish my third novel by conventional means, I finally learned
of Outskirts Press. Within three months, they had published No Laughing Matter, an amateur sleuth mystery that also made The Denver Post bestseller list and sold out at the landmark Tattered Cover Book Store, a Denver literary icon. No Laughing Matter also won the Harvey Award from the Colorado Authors’ League for best genre novel of 2007.

And your fourth book?

When they published my next novel, Neptune’s Chariot, it became a bestseller, too.

Above James Rollins and James Patterson – pretty impressive! How was your publishing experience with Outskirts Press?

I’m indebted to my Author Rep at Outskirts for her friendly, prompt and professional assistance. The Outskirts Press cover artist shared my vision of the covers, and executed beautifully.

Any advice for fellow authors?

Outskirts Press will help you find your dream, especially if, like me, you hear the clock ticking and can’t afford to play the waiting game.

Thank you, Irv. And congratulations on your success!

Five Self-Published Authors Earn Over $75,000

Five Self-Published Authors Earn Over $75,000 in Royalties From Outskirts Press in 3 Months

On the heels of Bowkers’ announcement that the quantity of on-demand and short-run publications experienced a five-fold increase in 2007, the fastest-growing full-service publisher in the self-publishing sector, Outskirts Press, today announced that its top-five earning authors combined to gross over $75,000 in royalties in the first 3 months of 2008.

“Bowkers reports that traditional publishing is flat while on-demand self-publishing is growing at a staggering rate,” said Brent Sampson, president and CEO of Outskirts Press. “Even in the shadow of such competition, Outskirts Press authors continue to demonstrate that it is possible to be very successful. And as you can see from our top five authors, some of whom granted their permission to be mentioned by name in this article, your chances increase if you adhere to some basic guidelines.”

  1. Write a good book.
No amount of marketing muscle can overcome a poor book, but a good book can compensate for minimal marketing through word of mouth. The viral and collaborative nature of today’s Internet 2.0 makes anything possible.
  2. Get your book professionally edited.
Either have your book edited before submission, or purchase the optional editing services provided by your self-publisher. Since they strongly recommend professional editing for every book, most self-publishers will feature rates that are typically less expensive than you will find yourself in the open marketplace.
  3. Get a professionally designed custom cover.
Your front cover has three seconds to attract a buyer’s attention; and since the majority of on-demand books are sold on retail websites like Amazon and Barnes & Noble, the cover is more important than ever. Just ask Gang Chen, a top-five author in the first quarter, whose book, Planting
    Design Illustrated
, features a custom cover from Outskirts Press. The result? His first quarter royalties far exceeded his entire publishing costs. Now it’s nothing but profit.
  4. Control your pricing.
On-demand and short-run publishing is the fastest growing segment of the publishing industry, but only a select few companies allow the author to set their own pricing plan, retail price, and author discount. Does that make a big difference? Just ask Kathleen Mackenzie, whose book, Not Manifesting? This Book is for You! retails for just $9.95, and yet grossed enough royalties in January, February, and March to earn a piece of that $75,000 pie.
  5. Market your book tirelessly!
Your destiny is in your hands and no one else’s. Just ask Joseph H. Trimbach and John M. Trimbach, top-five co-authors of American Indian Mafia. “We are available for speeches and presentations; our book was reviewed in the May/June issue of South Dakota magazine; and we appear live on radio news shows.”

And that’s just for starters. Marketing support like Outskirts Press’ exclusive Marketing
COACH
provides Diamond authors with promotion
advice and marketing suggestions via email for years
after publication. Four out of five top-earning authors
published with the Diamond package.

“In this day and age of print-on-demand, people are proving that anyone can ‘print’ a book,” states Sampson. “But what good is that? Successful authors have the potential to separate themselves from the pack by publishing with a full-service, custom publishing company that provides support before, during, and after publication.”

For example, in the first three months of 2008 alone, Outskirts Press introduced three exciting, new marketing services: the Global Book Tour package, the PR Publicist, and the Book Video option, uploaded everywhere from AOL to YouTube. These services are available for published Outskirts Press authors to request at any time from the convenience of their new Author Toolkit in their Author’s Center.

So what do modest authors say when informed they are among the top-grossing authors in the on-demand industry? “How exciting!” exclaims Not Manifesting’s Kathleen Mackenzie, who published with Outskirts Press in less than 6 weeks, kept all her rights, set all her pricing, and is now sharing $75,000 first quarter royalties with four others.

Yes, exciting is a good word for it.

The Daughter-in-Law Rules by Sally Shields

What do Dr. Laura, Star Magazine, and Martha Stewart have in common? They all love The Daughter-in-Law Rules, written by Sally Shields and published by Outskirts Press.

We recently caught up with author Sally Shields during her whirlwind promotional efforts to learn about these latest accomplishments.

We understand Dr. Laura recently recommended your book to all her listeners. Congratulations!

Yes! Ever since Dr. Laura recommended the DIL Rules on her show, my book made it to #5 in the Parent/Adult Child category on Amazon.

And just last Friday you appeared on Martha Stewart Whole Living Radio with Emily Hoffman to discuss your book, The Daughter-in-Law Rules: 101 Surefire Ways to Manage (and Make Friends with) Your Mother-In-Law!

The interview went well, but because it was Sirius Satellite, they are not able to provide me with an MP3. Oh, well…

But that’s okay, because Star Magazine recently mentioned your book, too!

The DIL Rules was picked up as a Hot Book for Star Magazine’s Hot Sheet.

We can tell you’ve been busy. Just look at this email our marketing department received recently, all the way from Ireland. Looks like you’re going international!

I’m getting in touch with you from the Life with Orla Barry show in News Talk 106-108 FM, a national radio station in Ireland. We saw details of Sally Shields’ new book, The Daughter-in-Law Rules, and we’d love to have a chat with her about it on our show. If you could get in touch with me as soon as possible, I’d really appreciate it.

Kind Regards,
Helen McCormack.
Researcher – News Talk 106-108

Congratulations on all your success, Sally!

Top 3 Tips You Can Learn From Sally Shields’ success:

  1. When you are interviewed, always request a copy of the recording (.mp3 for radio shows and .wmv for television). Upload them to itunes.com and youtube.com
  2. Success breeds success. One accomplishment will lead to another, which will lead to another, getting bigger and bigger, like a snowball rolling downhill.
  3. Keep on promoting! The Daughter-in-Law Rules was published in February. It took Ms. Shields over 4 months to start securing national radio interviews.

Denver Business Journal recognizes Outskirts Press

On July 17th, The Denver Business Journal recognized Outskirts Press as the fastest-growing privately held company in the “Flight IV” category within the Denver metropolitan area.

Participating companies were analyzed based upon their gross revenue growth over the past three years, and were subsequently divided by revenue tiers. “Small” companies were recognized in Flight V, “small-medium” companies were recognized in Flight IV, “medium” companies were recognized in Flight III, “medium-large” companies were recognized in Flight II, and “large” companies were recognized in Flight I.

This was the second year in a row The Denver Business Journal recognized Outskirts Press as one of the fastest-growing private companies. In 2007, Outskirts Press received its award for being the 3rd-fastest growing company in the “Small” companies category.

This year, Outskirts Press was recognized as the #1 fastest-growing company in the “Small-Medium” sized category, with a 3-year revenue growth percentage exceeding 500%, making it the third fastest-growing company overall.

When The Denver Business Journal interviewed CEO Brent Sampson and asked what has contributed to Outskirts Press’ growth, Sampson gave three main reasons:

  1. The growth of self-publishing in general. “The self-publishing industry is exploding.”
  2. Author support and customer service. “We’re in contact with many authors for years while they are still writing their books.”
  3. Unique opportunities for savvy authors. “The publication of a book is a strong marketing tool for speakers, entrepreneurs, CEOs, and other professionals.”
