Official Outskirts Press EVVY Award Nominees for 2012

The EVVY Awards are widely acclaimed for recognizing excellence in independently published books. Offered every year, these awards are sponsored by the Colorado Independent Publishers’ Association (CIPA), and judged by a panel of professionals on a qualitative scale of merit in nineteen different categories.

Each year, Outskirts Press officially nominates a small percentage of the books published during the year for submission to the EVVY Awards. Since a nomination is the first step toward receiving the Outskirts Press Best Book of the Year Award, the standards are exceedingly high; we nominated just 2% of the books we published in 2012. These nominations represent the very best of our publications as determined by Outskirts Press executives and members of the production teams.

Outskirts Press official nominees and winners receive additional exposure of their books in featured Outskirts Press marketing channels, including our blog, social media networks, and in our email newsletters.  The winners are announced during an awards ceremony hosted by the Colorado Independent Publishers Association on May 18, 2013.

Congratulations to this year’s Official Outskirts Press EVVY Award nominees, presented alphabetically below:

Wait! There’s more!

As a result of being nominated for the EVVY Awards, these Outskirts Press authors have taken the first step toward winning the coveted Outskirts Press Best Book of the Year Award. Three of the nominees above who subsequently win an EVVY Award during the CIPA banquet this coming May will be selected as Semi-Finalists for our annual Best Book of the Year Award and its $1,500 Grand Prize.  Stay tuned.

Self Publishing Year in Review: Oct-Dec 2009

The fourth quarter started with the hotly-anticipated announcement of 3 additional trim sizes for self-publishing full-color paperback books : 5.5″ x 8.5″, 7″ x 10″, and 8″ x 10″. These sizes joined the already available full-color paperback sizes of 8.5″ x 8.5″ and 8.25″ x 11″.

Right on the heels of Outskirts Press landing nearly smack-dab in the middle of the Inc. 500 list at #268, venture capital firm Foundation Capital and Inc. Magazine honored Outskirts Press again in the 4th quarter with “best of the best” honors from among all 500 companies.

The 4th quarter marked the introduction of two exciting new marketing options for self-publishing writers, namely the custom t-shirt featuring the author’s cover; and the first iTunes option, namely the Enhanced Audio Excerpt, which includes a professional recording of the author’s excerpt and the creation of an iTunes graphic, plus “podcast level” distribution.

The Enhanced Audio Excerpt was the reward for the author of the most popular Halloween Book Video, as determined by readers of this blog in the 4th quarter.  José Cepeda García’s book video trailer for his book, 21 Bizarre Short Stories, was voted the most popular, taking home 50% of the votes.  Press play to watch the winning video:

José Cepeda García’s winning streak continued when 21 Bizarre Short Stories became an official Outskirts Press nominee for an EVVY Award, and was a finalist in the USA Book News Awards, joining 13 other Outskirts Press authors, including category winners Elise Cooke (for The Grocery Garden), J. Laurence Stillwell (for The Soldiers of the Cross), and Leon Newton (for Titus). Congratulations to them all!

Ex-New York Yankee Fritz Peterson hit a home run in the 4th quarter when his book Mickey Mantle is Going to Heaven, debuted on the Outskirts Press Top 10 Bestsellers List for September and stayed in the top 10 for October. Mickey Mantle is Going to Heaven is also an official Outskirts Press EVVY Award nominee.

Meanwhile (and speaking of New York), the following 12 Outskirts Press books were featured in a full-page ad in the December 13th issue of the New York Times Book Review:

Following Joe
Hanging on a Twisted Line
Hooked
How do Religious Figures Induce the Establishment of Sects?
The ‘I Love My Bible’ Commentary
Immaculate Deception
The Immigrants
Life Under the Corporate Microscope
Schrodinger’s Universe
Through the Triangle
Unstoppable Confidence
Wrongsized

Awards season got in full-swing in the 4th quarter with talented and hopeful self-publishing writers keeping the Author Support department busy with hundreds of submissions to major book awards like the Benjamin Franklin Awards and ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Awards.

And, of course, the 4th quarter marks the time of year when the official Outskirts Press EVVY nomination invitations are sent to select authors.  Less than 5% of the books published by Outskirts Press are nominated for this prestigious annual award, currently in its 16th year.

Below are the official Outskirts Press EVVY nominees for the 2010 EVVY Awards.   Please join us in congratulating them all!

Official Outskirts Press EVVY Award Nominees

The EVVY Awards recognize excellence in self-published books. Each fall, approximately 5% of the books published by Outskirts Press become finalists for official Outskirts Press nomination by receiving an invitation to participate from Outskirts Press.

Exemplary Outskirts Press books are nominated by the Author Support Department and OP Executive Team for submission to the EVVY Awards in the fall of the year of their copyright. For example, this past November select books with a copyright date of 2009  were invited to participate in the 2010 EVVY Awards by receiving an invitation via email from our Director of Author Support.

All the books published with our Diamond and Pearl packages are automatically eligible for EVVY Award Nominee consideration, but not all Diamond and Pearl books receive an official nomination. What makes a good EVVY Award Nominee? The same thing that makes any good award-winning book:  A fantastic cover, strong, well-written content, and copyediting. These are the cornerstones of any good book. Fortunately, Outskirts Press offers the optional services necessary to turn an average book into a good one, and a good book into an award-winning one!

So, without further ado, please join us in congratulating this year’s Official Outskirts Press EVVY Award Nominees:

Excellence in Self Publishing – 2011 EVVY Awards

Here is everything you ever wanted to know about the EVVY Book Awards…

What are the EVVY Awards?

The EVVY Awards recognize excellence in self-published books. Each year, 5% of the books published by Outskirts Press become finalists for official Outskirts Press nomination by receiving an invitation to participate from Outskirts Press.

When are books nominated by Outskirts Press?

Exemplary Outskirts Press books are nominated by the Author Support Department and OP Executive Team for submission to the EVVY Awards in the fall of the year of their copyright. For example, books with a copyright date of 2010  are invited to participate in the 2011 EVVY Awards by receiving an invitation via email in the fall of 2010.

The Outskirts Press Author Support Department will be notifying select authors of 2010 copyright books throughout the week of November 8th via email.  If you receive an invitation from Outskirts Press, you have a limited amount of time to accept the nomination and take the steps outlined in the email.

Where are the EVVY Awards held?

The EVVY Awards Banquet and Awards Ceremony are held in Denver, Colorado in March of each year.

Who sponsors the EVVY Awards?

The EVVY Awards are named in honor of the first president of the Colorado Independent Publishers Association; and CIPA continues the tradition of recognizing excellence in self-published books with their annual EVVY Book Awards.

How do you win an EVVY Award?
In order to be considered for an official 2011 Outskirts Press EVVY Nomination, your book must be published with either the Diamond Publishing Package (for black/white) or the Pearl Publishing Package (for color) and have a copyright date of 2009. Having a custom cover and professional editing services significantly increases your chances.

Why should eligible authors accept their EVVY Award nomination and participate in the Awards?

Winning any kind of book award is one of the most recognized and effective methods of differentiating your book from the masses. The EVVY Awards improve the chances of your book winning an award because just being nominated to participate indicates your book is in the top 5%.  In fact, recipients of the EVVY Invitation should strongly consider entering their book in additional book award contests.  Details about saving 25% with the Book Awards Submission Package can be found by clicking here.

Furthermore, unlike many other national contests, the EVVY Awards typically involve less than 250 total books, among numerous categories.  Plus, the CIPA EVVY Awards are nationally recognized as being indicative of excellence.

Along with the sense of pride and accomplishment that comes from winning the EVVY Award, Outskirts Press Officially Nominated EVVY Award-winning authors receive a variety of marketing and promotional materials, opportunities, and prizes. Depending upon the placing of your book among the winners, you may receive some or all of what is listed below:

  • Marketing materials like bookmarks and placards (all winners)
  • A framed award featuring the cover of your book (1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners)
  • Bonus blog and newsletter exposure (all winners)
