We need your help!Outskirts Press is about to launch a new service to help authors publish their books for the iPad/iPhone and distribute those e-books through the Apple iBookstore. With our online poll, please tell us which service you would value more as an Outskirts Press published author:

Option 1 – iPad/iPhone Edition with Standard iBookstore Distribution for $399

We will create an epub format of your book (which includes a unique ISBN, as required by Apple) and submit your e-book to Apple through our Outskirts Press account, meaning it would be published by Outskirts Press. You must set your e-book price between $4.99 and $9.99. For as long as your hardcopy edition is under contract with Outskirts Press, you would earn 50% net royalties. You would not receive the epub file.

Option 2 – iPad/iPhone Edition with ENHANCED iBookstore Distribution for $699

We will create an epub format of your book (including a unique Bowker-provided ISBN in YOUR name). The file will be submitted to Apple on your behalf, through your own iTunes Connect account at whatever price you set. You will be listed as the publisher. You would earn 100% net royalties. Your e-book would continue to be available through the iBookstore regardless of your hardcopy edition status with Outskirts Press. You would receive the epub file to pursue other ebook opportunities.

The polling is closed. Thank you to everyone who shared their viewpoints.

Reach the “In-the-Know” Publishers Weekly Crowd with Co-op Advertising for Self-Publishing Authors

Reach the “In-the-Know” Publishers Weekly Crowd with Co-op Advertising for Self-Publishing Authors

Outskirts Press has just added a co-op advertising option to its marketing arsenal that allows authors to inexpensively target 80,000 booksellers, publishers, librarians, wholesalers, distributors and agents with news of their book through the powerful and influential Publishers Weekly.

April 26, 2011 – Denver, CO – Outskirts Press, the fastest growing self-publishing and book marketing company, announced today its Co-op Advertising Program in Publishers Weekly for participating authors.  This new marketing option allows authors a way to place their books before 80,000 opinion leaders in the publishing world through Publishers Weekly at a fraction of the cost they would have to pay to run a full color ad of their own.

The internationally renowned Publishers Weekly is the premiere publication serving all those involved in the creation, production, marketing and sales of the written word in book, audio, video and electronic formats.  In business for over one hundred and thirty-eight years, they regularly publish influential industry announcements, ground breaking retail news, exclusive author interviews and special supplements covering printing and publishing activities.

Publishers Weekly is the publishing world’s bible and their audience is a who’s who of the most influential in the world of words: booksellers, publishers, public libraries and public library systems, college and university libraries, authors and writers, literary and rights agents, and print, film and broad media personnel.

“To be able to place a book right under the eyes of such influential people at such a minimal cost is an opportunity we’re proud to be able to offer our authors through this new Co-op Advertising Program,” said Outskirts Press Director of Author Support Kelly Schuknecht.

Authors marketing their books through the Co-op Advertising Program can secure premium, full color exposure for a minimal amount of money.  Each book will occupy a 2” x 2.5” space (example below) within a full color, full page ad along with eleven other Outskirts authors.  The book’s ad space includes a full color image of the book, an abbreviated synopsis, its ISBN and its retail price along with all the retail and wholesale ordering information necessary to purchase a copy or copies of the book.

Command Influence Co-op

Publishers Weekly issues come out on a weekly basis and reservations for the Co-op Advertising Program are filled by Outskirts Press on a first come, first served basis.  Published authors can reserve their space from within their publishing center at http://goo.gl/Kv0Yd.

Outskirts Press offers high-quality, full-service self-publishing and book marketing services for writers and professionals who are seeking a cost-effective, fast, and flexible way to publish and distribute their books worldwide while retaining 100% of their rights, 100% of their profits, and 100% of the creative control. www.outskirtspress.com.

New blog branding – What do you think?

Frequent visitors to this blog will notice some drastic changes this week. The same great content is here, but it’s wrapped in a very different wrapper (or, “blog theme” as they’re called).  We made this change for a few reasons:

  1. The previous blog was difficult to navigate. It had a “home page” which focused on the single most-recent blog posting along with a large graphic but unfortunately, the actual content of the blog posting wasn’t on the home page. In order to read the actual blog posting, you needed to “click” on the graphic or “read more” link to actually read the post.  Our site analysis told us many people weren’t doing this.
  2. This new blog kind of looks like a leather-bound book, don’t you think? In other words, its aesthetics more closely match the content of this blog.
  3. Links actually look like links you can click.  The previous blog featured links that were italicized and in a black font, making them nearly invisible among the actual content. It wasn’t clear what/where you were supposed to click to get more information.
  4. With the addition of the background, this new blog design also completes our social community branding process, which has been finalized for Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to match our website’s homepage. See the screen shots below:

Three Free Amazon Marketing Options Prepare Self-Publishing Authors for Success

Three Free Amazon Marketing Options Prepare Self-Publishing Authors for Success

This April Outskirts Press offers self-publishing authors a trifecta marketing jump-start for their books by taking triple advantage of the immense audience of Amazon.com, the largest online retailer in the United States, to promote their books.  These three Amazon options are free for authors this month with the purchase of a high-quality self-publishing package.

April 5, 2011 – Denver, CO – Outskirts Press, the fastest growing self-publishing and book marketing company, announced today it is offering three of its most popular marketing options (a $300 value) to authors who start their publishing process by Tax Day, April 15th.  These options include the Amazon Kindle Edition, Amazon’s Search Inside the Book submission and Amazon Keyword Search/Tagging. Also included is a free paperback copy of Sell Your Book on Amazon by Brent Sampson.

Authors who start publishing with Outskirts Press by choosing the Diamond, Ruby, or full-color Pearl publishing services will receive over $300 of Amazon marketing options free: the Amazon Kindle edition of their published book, Amazon’s “Search Inside the Book” submission service, and the Amazon Keyword Search tagging function once their book is listed on Amazon.com.  These authors will also receive a free copy of the Amazon bestseller Sell Your Book on Amazon by Outskirts Press CEO Brent Sampson.

“The combination of these Amazon marketing tools are not available with any other publisher,” said Outskirts Press Director of Author Support Kelly Schuknecht.  “Taking advantage of these proven Amazon promotional functions is the perfect — and perfectly economical — way for authors to launch their book sales with gusto by choosing to publish now with Outskirts Press.”

The first prong of the Outskirts Press triple marketing approach is a free Kindle edition of the author’s book.  An Amazon Kindle edition is the proven method to introduce an author’s book to the fast growing audience of Kindle e-book reading device owners.  More than eight million Kindles were sold in 2010 alone.  Because Amazon.com customers love reading actual books, Kindle is an inexpensive way for them to sample a book before buying the paperback or hardback edition.  This is especially true for readers who love fiction.

With Amazon’s Search Inside the Book feature, authors can also dramatically increase their chances to sell their books.  Amazon has found that books that participate in this program are significantly more successful, on average, than books that do not participate.  Being able to browse through sections of the book increases the confidence the customer has in the product and makes it far more likely they’ll purchase a copy of the book.

The third marketing strategy of the Outskirts Press marketing package for authors who begin publishing before April 15th is the Amazon Keyword Search tagging service.  Customers who are looking to buy a book are not usually familiar with an author’s name or even the title of the book.  They search instead by keywords or phrases that describe their interest.  Books participating in this option are “tagged” with ten applicable terms and keywords on Amazon’s Product Detail page.  This encourages other visitors to “tag” the book with the same keywords or phrases and this can give more weight to those terms – and hence the author’s book –  in Amazon’s search results.

Authors who wish to receive high-quality publishing services and over $300 in Amazon marketing services need only enter the valid promotional code while they order their publishing package and place it in their online shopping cart. For details and the promotion code, visit http://outskirtspress.com/promotion.html .

Self-Publishing Authors Receive 1st Chapter Exposure to 20,000 Libraries, 3,300 Bookstores

Self-Publishing Authors Receive 1st Chapter Exposure to 20,000 Libraries, 3,300 Bookstores

For authors who want to place the first chapter of their books in front of those who matter the most, Outskirts Press now offers a 1st Chapter Preview option that distributes their first chapter to a total of 35,000 libraries, bookstores, media reviewers, bloggers and readers.

March 16, 2011 – Denver, CO – Outskirts Press, the fastest growing self-publishing and book marketing company, announced today the availability of its First Chapter Preview option.  Authors can now introduce their books to opinion leaders in the publishing field by distributing their first chapter, along with a full color quarter page ad, to 20,000 public libraries, 3,300 independent bookstores, more than 300 media reviewers and another 11,000 selected readers.

Outskirts Press’ First Chapter Preview is a new entry point into distribution channels that were not so easily available previously to self-published authors. After studying, polling and surveying librarians and independent bookstore owners to find out what they most wanted to know about new books being released, this new opportunity now distributes book information to 35,000 opt-in subscribers.  Libraries and independent bookstores will carry self-published, print on demand and small publisher’s books once they know that the book has a potential audience and that it conforms to standards.

Buyers and readers are much more apt to purchase a book if they have been able to preview the first chapter in advance.  This is particularly true for first time fiction authors who now have the opportunity to “hook” the reader with a well crafted first chapter.

“The increased exposure to key figures associated with the self publishing industry will help our authors’ books be discovered and will dramatically increase their potential for sales,” said Outskirts Press Director of Author Support Kelly Schuknecht.

Included with the first chapter presentation is a full color, quarter page ad in the catalog which includes a color image of the cover, a book synopsis and all the necessary title, pricing and publisher information for ordering.  This distribution continues for three consecutive months.

31 Book Marketing Tips for Self-Publishing Authors

31 Book Marketing Tips for Self-Publishing Authors

We hope you find this list of 31 book marketing tips valuable… and with the new a la carte marketing options available through Outskirts Press, no matter where you may have published, you can start your book marketing efforts the right way.

Mar 1 – If you do not have enough author’s copies on hand, contact your publisher and order more so they arrive in enough time to pursue these other tips throughout the month. For Outskirts Press authors, here’s a direct link to your book ordering page where you can receive free domestic shipping via UPS Ground within the continental United States  if you order 50 or more copies before Saturday, March 5th, 2011. No promotion code needed!

Mar 2 – Contact other independent published authors in your area (through local associations you may belong to) and combine your resources to fully exploit the opportunities during this month. There’s a lot to do, and four hands are better than two. With the advent of social networking sites, this is easier than ever. In fact your publisher may already have a group on such sites as MySpace or FaceBook or a following on Twitter to help you connect with other writers. Here is the Outskirts Press Facebook community.

Mar 3 – Contact your local bookstores and suggest they offer discounts on Small Press books this month (since March is Small Press Month). Bring in yours and offer it to them at a discount to get them started. Show them the rest of this calendar as a way of indicating your commitment to making their event successful. Offer to leave a free copy with them along with a sales sheet. Here’s a link to the ABA Bookseller directory.

Mar 4 – Make a 60 second book video trailer and distribute it to video and social networking sites like YouTube and Facebook. Don’t know the first thing about how you would do that? Outskirts Press can do it for you, affordably and professionally – just click here.

Here’s a sample:

Mar 5 – Send a press release to the local media (newspapers, radio, television) mentioning Small Press Month and your independently published book. If you secured some events, mention them in the release. Don’t yet have a press release? Outskirts Press can compose and distribute a custom press release on your behalf.

Mar 6 – Follow-up on your press release from yesterday with the local media via telephone. Reiterate Small Press Month, your planned events in the community, and your Small Press book. Send them a review of your book that they can use as a foundation. (Less work for them). Outskirts Press can perform a PR Publicist Campaign for your custom press release which includes additional distribution, phone-call follow-up, and more.

Mar 7 – If you haven’t yet published your book, today is the day to start. Outskirts Press, the fastest-growing full service self-publishing and book marketing service is offering an instant 10% discount on their 3 best publishing services. Click here for the necessary promotion code and promotion dates.  Then listen to an audio recording from a recent author, Joanne Bodin, author of Walking Fish.

Mar 8 – Contact your local libraries and suggest they feature Small Press titles, including yours. Offer to leave a free copy with them, along with a sales sheet. If you’re an Outskirts Press author, you can generate a sales sheet automatically in your Publishing Center here. You can even change it and update it first through your Author Toolkit by modifying and updating your author webpage.

Mar 9 – If you haven’t yet sent out review copies for book, now is the time. For published Outskirts Press authors, your Book Review Starter Kit has many book reviewers listed, and you also have the option of the Book Review Submission service.

Mar 10 – Contact local schools in your area and tell them about Small Press Month. Mention that you are a local published author and offer to speak to their assembly about the topic of your book; or, even, on how to accomplish their dreams of being published. This is particularly effective if you have a children’s book you can then sell after the assembly. Plus, you can earn affiliate commissions by recommending our full-color Pearl publishing package. In addition to cookbooks or art books, the Pearl package is perfect for children’s books (since over 30 different artistic illustration packages are available – click here to view them).

Watch the Pearl Package video…

Mar 11 – Contact local universities and colleges. Same concept as yesterday — promote yourself and your book by sharing your knowledge of how to write a book and get it published. Sell copies of your book in the back of the room, and earn 10% referral commissions by referring other authors to our Publishing Services.

Mar 12 – Schedule a seminar or tele-seminar on “How to Write and Publish a Book” and offer a “Small Press Month” discount on the registration fee. Send out a local news release about your class. GoToMeeting.com offers a free 30 day trial to create your own webinar. Give it a try!

Mar 13 – March 13th will be lucky for you when you hire a professional marketing assistant to help you complete these 31 ideas (along with other marketing tactics you may not even know about). 5 hours of personal marketing assistance is available by clicking here.

Mar 14 – Some authors put themselves into their books. Now you can do it literally, by ordering a custom t-shirt featuring your book cover on the front and back. It’s available no matter where you published. Click here to order.

Mar 15 – Advertising independently can be expensive. A single full-page ad in the New York Times costs over $40,000! But, thankfully, Outskirts Press offers its family of published authors co-op advertising opportunities in ForeWord Reviews, Spirituality & Health, New York Review of Books, and soon (you heard it here first), Publisher’s Weekly.

Mar 16 – Contact all the local radio producers in your area and pitch them on Small Press Month. The Radio Locator website makes it easy to find a radio station’s contact information.

Mar 17 – Think St. Patrick’s Day thoughts and then “go green” by making sure you have published your book with a book publisher like Outskirts Press, who offers 30% post-consumer recycled materials in the most popular paper choices.

Mar 18 – Make sure you have an Amazon Kindle edition of your book. One of our most popular services for OP authors, as well as authors published elsewhere, is our Amazon Kindle option, available by clicking here.

Mar 19 – According to Amazon, books that participate in their Search Inside the Book feature sell many more copies than those that don’t, so be sure YOUR book is a part of “Search Inside.” Outskirts Press offers Search Inside Submissions for authors published with Outskirts Press and elsewhere. Order by clicking here.

Mar 20 – This may be the month to switch publishers if you have published elsewhere. Look at the publisher you chose and ask yourself: Is your retail price too high? Is your profit too low? Is your author’s copy price too high? Are your marketing options too costly? (Read this 2009 blog posting about one of our options that costs $99 for our authors and costs over one THOUSAND dollars through one of our competitors). Compare and save potentially thousands of dollars.

Mar 21 – Small Press Month is just one month out of 12. Prepare for other months by showcasing your book at international book fairs like the London Book Fair, Book Expo of America, Beijing, and Frankfurt. Or make it easy on yourself with the Global Book Tour marketing package: 4 events in 4 countries in 4 months.

Mar 22 – Get your book reviewed by Amazon reviewers. You can find a list of the most popular and prolific Amazon reviewers by clicking here.

Mar 23 – Contact the Learning Annex (or similarly themed Adult Education Program) in your area and offer to teach a class on the subject of your book. As a published author, you are qualified to teach on your subject since you are an expert. Your book may even be required reading for each student! Cha-ching! If you’re published through Outskirts Press, send them to our bookstore so they receive a 10% discount off other online retailers (and you still earn your full 100% profit royalty). Cha-ching, again!

Mar 24 – Create a social networking account on Twitter, FaceBook, MySpace, and LinkedIn. Follow us on Twitter for book marketing suggestions and news in 140 characters or less.

Mar 25 – Contact the public libraries in each state and mention your involvement with Small Press Month. Send them information about your book. Here’s a link that will get you started: http://www.publiclibraries.com/

Mar 26 – Start preparing for April (National Poetry Month), especially if you have a book of poetry.  We publish high-quality, award-winning volumes of poetry all the time.  In fact, Outskirts Press authors swept the Poetry Category in the 2009 Reader’s Views Literary Awards. See how we do this year when all the finalists are announced on this blog tomorrow.

Mar 27 – Help other writers you know get published and earn a 10% commission for the referral after their book is published. Register for the exciting Outskirts Press affiliate program by clicking here.

Mar 28 – Start a blog and keep it active and up-to-date. Register it with blog directories so others start reading it and participating. There are many blog programs to help you get started. Conduct a search on Google for the one that works for you. We use WordPress.

Mar 29 – Submit your published book to the Google Base listings. It’s free. http://base.google.com

Mar 30 – Publish a “Large Print” edition of your book. With the world’s demographics growing older, “large print” editions are becoming more and more popular. Featuring 14 or 16 point fonts, these editions appeal to the aging community because they are easier to read. You’ve already written the book, now re-publish a new “Large Print” edition to increase your revenue and double the effectiveness of your marketing initiatives. It’s easy to get published here.

Mar 31 – Relax! It’s been a busy, productive month. Fortunately, Outskirts Press makes publishing and marketing a book easy. Check out our most popular Diamond publishing service by kicking-back and watching the video below:
