Michael Birt was born in 1987 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and moved throughout his childhood until his military family was stationed in Texas. He was the youngest of three children. Ever since he could remember he’s had a passion for wildlife and conservation. He attended Texas A&M University where he obtained a degree in wildlife and fisheries sciences. He has taken part in several conservation projects including one with James Cook University in Australia dealing with the Great Barrier Reef and the highland rainforests of northern Australia. He published his first research with the Fort Worth Zoo at the age of 18. He then worked at the Fort Worth Zoo for two years. He now resides in Stephenville, Texas with his faithful conservation pup Kody pursuing a masters degree in animal science at Tarleton State University.

Since her father’s death, Savannah Morgan has considered herself a realist who doesn’t waste time with things like the supernatural or fairy tales. With no other family and a limited knowledge of her parents’ pasts, she makes the best of her life. Years later at the age of sixteen, she is given her mother’s cherished locket when her mother passes away from an abnormally rapid Leukemia. Orphaned, alone, and more cynical than ever, Savannah moves in with her parents’ closest friends miles from her home. It is there that she opens the locket and discovers a portal to an enchanted world where a kingdom lies in peril. A war is about to erupt and the general is unreachable on the other side of the Mysterious Forest, which no solider will cross. There has only ever been one other time in the kingdom’s history when such an event has occurred…eighteen years ago when the only person brave enough to save it was her mother. Savannah’s black and white beliefs are soon challenged as she agrees to help the kingdom, unknowingly getting herself into more than she bargained for, including a rediscovery of her imagination and passion for life. Along the way she faces many obstacles including vicious ogres, temperamental pixies, and a prince in disguise who may just show her that it’s alright to believe in the make-believe.

Elise Koepke is a first time author and an avid reader. The Locket was written when she was eleven years old and has been an almost ten-year quest to get published. In that ten years she has performed in various school and community theater productions, graduated high school with high distinction, and modeled for Keen Modeling Agency. Now, she attends college in Rochester, NY, studying to be a clinical psychologist with her boyfriend Charlie, also studying psychology. She hopes to write more books in the future and in the meantime will get her masters to be a marriage and family counselor.

The Vietnam Era through the eyes of a non-combat Army officer…

Fortunately, not everyone who was on active duty during the Vietnam era went to war, but they didn’t miss all the action. Although no one was shooting at them, non-combat officers were heroically engaged in the age-old battles against military logic, rules, and bureaucracy.

This is the memoir of Captain William Stone, who not only led the first systematic critique of Mexican food available near the White Sands Missile Range and singlehandedly revised the wording on the mess-hall inspection form—he also cleverly got his men out of morning formations and was “killed” twice during exercises. On active duty, he courageously rode in helicopters, was ruled the victor in an Inspector- General complaint against his colonel, and even fired a missile. (Okay, it was only a rocket filled with weather instruments.)

Captain Stone describes ROTC and unveils the mysteries of KP, sick call, saluting protocols, uniforms, and getting beer at the PX. He tells of juggling a university education with a military obligation and recounts the joys of active duty, such as firing an M-16 in full automatic mode when told not to, taking over the company when the “real captain” wasn’t there, being in an Army research lab at the dawn of weather satellites, and suffering the vagaries of Army publishing.

There Are No Drafted Captains is sometimes irreverent, sometimes nostalgic, but always humorous. Think the Army is different now? Maybe not so much.

Captain Stone survived the Army, and the Army no doubt got over him long ago. Dr. Stone is semiretired now, after a fulfilling career applying his geology degrees to teaching and resolving water-resource/environmental issues through jobs in universities, government agencies, mining and consulting, including two stints as Visiting Scientist in Australia. He has published numerous journal articles and a technical book with Prentice Hall (Hydrogeology in Practice). He currently writes Hydrothink, a humorous but instructive column for a bimonthly professional magazine.

Having great interest in Biblical History, Leonora researched and studied at home while raising 6 children with her husband. She set out to write a book finding the stories in the bible miraculously similar to everyone’s own needed personal triumphs. She desired to share the life lessons she learned to be more than a conqueror in every aspect of life. They reside in New York.

Young Logan’s Story is about twelve-year old Logan, author Guy Buckles’ grandson, who struggles with an unknown disease that slowly exhausts his strength and staying power. This personal narrative explains his attitude, daily and weekly medical endurances as he combats his disease and secondary health issues. He is perceived as different than his friends and fellow students; a child who writes a novel about an animal that is different but changes its species forever: and in so doing, the animal proves being different does not mean you cannot make a difference. Guy uses Mr. Tibbs and his cast of supporting characters to further illustrate that being different does not mean one cannot make a difference.

Guy Buckles is retired having spent time in the military, as an educator, Justice of the Peace (Texas) and a rancher. He has his post-graduate PhD.
