Triple Treat of Free Options for Authors Self-Publishing with Outskirts Press in May

The May Triple Treat for Diamond and Peal package authors includes a free Book Video Teaser that authors can upload to their YouTube accounts, a free Library of Congress Control Number to give readers access to new books throughout the United States library system, and a free Espresso Book Machine® edition to make their hardcopy book available at Espresso printing machines in universities and libraries across the planet.

Book Video TeaserThe Book Video Teaser is a fast, flashy way to announce the publication of an author’s book on all the most popular Internet video and networking sites. Outskirts Press produces a professional quality, thirty second long video that features the book title, the author byline, the cover, a photo of the author, the retail price — all dramatically displayed to the accompaniment of background music.

The author is provided with an .mp4 Book Video Teaser file that the author can easily use to launch the book’s viral video promotion. Some of the most popular video sharing sites that authors use today to announce their book’s publication are YouTube, Myspace, Metacafe, Daily Motion, Live Video and Viddler.

Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN)The Library of Congress Control Number helps facilitate the distribution of a new title through the entire United States’ library system. Outskirts Press will take care of all the administrative paperwork and acquire the number for the author, print it on the book’s copyright page in the standard format and submit the required number of copies of the book to the Library of Congress offices after publication. The Library of Congress is a broad distribution channel available for new books which is frequently overlooked by first time authors.

Espresso Book Machine EditionThe third “treat” in Outskirts Press’ May promotion is an Espresso Book Machine® edition. Billed by Time Magazine as the “invention of the year,” the Espresso Book Machine® is a revolutionary automated book-making machine that provides an immediate and direct-to-consumer distribution channel. A consumer walks up to the machine, selects a title to print and presses a button. Within a few minutes a full color cover, perfect bound edition of the book, indistinguishable from the publisher’s version, is delivered right into the reader’s hands.

These literary ATM machines have been set up in select universities and libraries in this country and abroad and provide convenient and immediate world wide distribution for an author’s work. Espresso Book Machines® are in the New York Public Library, the University of Michigan library, the World Bank InfoShop in Washington, DC, the London Newsstand, UK, and the Melbourne, Australia, Angus and Robertson Bookstore, just to name a few of the current locations.

Authors can take advantage of this May promotion by using the promotion code “3FREE2012” when ordering the Diamond or Pearl publishing packages at http://outskirtspress.com/p/diamond or http://outskirtspress.com/p/pearl, respectively.

Self-Publishing Book Spotlight: A Life of Courage and Love by Mark S. Foster

Self-publishing a book is an exciting undertaking. Because we understand the dedication that is required to write a quality book, we like to feature our top authors each week so that you can get to know a little bit more about them and their book. This week, we are featuring Mark S. Foster’s A Life of Courage and Love.

In her latest book, self-publishing Outskirts Press author, Mark S. Foster, tells the remarkable story of a woman who agreed to be an “experiment” as an early kidney transplant recipient and went on to become the world’s longest living diabetic kidney transplant survivor, all the while working tirelessly to provide hope to other kidney transplant patients and to the blind.

Marcia Lortscher’s early years showed no signs of the exceptional life she was eventually destined to live. She was born and raised in a comfortable, conservative middle class Catholic family in Denver and she finished college before the 1970’s feminist revolution. She then explored several different career paths before marrying in her late twenties.

Then fate intervened. Marcia had been diagnosed a diabetic at age ten, but just after she married, her kidneys failed. She had been looking forward to settling comfortably into a conventional housewife’s role, but instead doctors suddenly began measuring her life expectancy in weeks. So serious was her condition that her doctors initially demurred at performing a kidney transplant.

She was finally accepted for the operation as an “experiment” and she ultimately became the longest living diabetic kidney transplant patient, surviving for thirty-six years.

Marcia experienced an endless array of harrowing medical problems and she went blind in her early forties, but she devoted her life to serving others through volunteerism. She and her husband had no biological children of their own, but they became surrogate parents to well over a hundred young people whom they called their “kids.” Marcia’s continuing work on behalf of other social service groups eventually brought her widespread recognition as one of the nation’s most valued volunteers.

Although this exceptional woman was uncomfortable with being singled out for praise and disliked being called an “inspiration,” readers of A Life of Courage and Love may decide that that label is, in fact, totally appropriate.

Self-Publishing Book Spotlight: A Glimpse Into the Inner Workings of My God by Michael L. Watson

Self-publishing a book is an exciting undertaking. Because we understand the dedication that is required to write a quality book, we like to feature our top authors each week so that you can get to know a little bit more about them and their book. This week, we are featuring Michael L. Watson’s A Glimpse Into the Inner Workings of My God.

In his latest book, self-publishing Outskirts Press author, Michael L. Watson, shows how the outdated and counter-productive dogma of today’s organized religions discriminates against all non-believers and against any believers who tend to be different and often overlooks the importance of women in God’s universe.

Today the media embellishes the thoughts of scientific geniuses such as Stephen Hawking and Craig Venter in their rush to heighten their celebrity status, but by doing so they lower the value that God plays in the sanity of this universe. For those struggling to find some moral conscience in a world full of economic and political unrest and natural disasters, organized religions no longer provide the spiritual and pragmatic support to parishioners made uncertain by this endless assault of “bad news.”

Believers and non-believers alike want to know why the endless strife of the world creates more pain and suffering than does transitory spiritual joy. They want to know if God created evolution or if evolution created God and they want to know if there is any other reason than blind faith to believe in an afterlife.

In A Glimpse into the Inner Workings of My God Watson chronicles his thirty year spiritual journey overcoming challenges to his health and to his human frailty and offers his readers a new understanding of a personal relationship with God that will bring them an inner peace in this world at war with itself.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Michael L. Watson is an inspirational author whose life has been nothing short of exceptional. Michael was raised by a divorced, always working, tough-loving mom who placed God first in their tiny, cramped apartment and put Michael through disciplined parochial education. Following in God’s ordered steps, Michael weathered more than his share of life’s endless struggles. For almost 30 years, with a “thy will be done” attitude, he overcame such life threatening health challenges as uncontrollable hemorrhaging, Tuberculosis, and Stage IV Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. With a Bachelors Degree in Health Care Administration, this proud father of seven college-educated children spent over 50 years experiencing life to perfect his reality-based personal relationship with God.

Outskirts Press to Boost Self-Publishing Book Sales Through New Amazon Listing Optimization Service

Well-written marketing copy is vital to capturing the imaginations of prospective readers. However, writing to appeal to calculating, non-human search engines is more complex than putting together frilly words artistically. Search engines don’t react emotionally to riveting copy; they discover relevant content based on complex algorithms.

Amazon Listing Optimization tailors the Amazon sales page to appeal to both Internet search engines and the additional readers who are subsequently directed to the optimized Amazon sales page.

The Outskirts Press staff spends a great deal of time around books and understands what entices readers to buy. Additionally, the staff of professional marketers is knowledgeable about how to use search engine optimization (SEO) – a technique that flummoxes even the best authors – to attract more readers to the appropriate sales page. With Amazon Listing Optimization authors receive:

1. Professionally written and carefully worded marketing language.
2. Verbiage that entices readers to buy.
3. Researched keywords that perform well in search engine results pages.
4. Search engine optimized copy that increases the odds a book will turn up when appropriate potential buyers conduct a search.
5. Better selling odds with no additional effort.

Learn more about this exciting new option, which is available for all authors, published with Outskirts Press or not, at http://outskirtspress.com/p/amazonoptimized.

Self-Publishing Book Spotlight: Highway Odyssey by Alexander Flint

Self-publishing a book is an exciting undertaking. Because we understand the dedication that is required to write a quality book, we like to feature our top authors each week so that you can get to know a little bit more about them and their book. This week, we are featuring Alexander Flint’s Highway Odyssey.

In his latest book, self-publishing Outskirts Press author, Alexander Flint, reinforces for readers what really matters in life and how important it is to tell the ones we love how much they mean to us.

Flint’s first trip was in 1978 when he and his seven year old his son set out in their customized van to drive from New York to Colorado with their eyes set on the adventures of the road. Little did either know that that first summer trip would start a twenty year tradition that would make Flint’s son eligible for setting a Guinness world record. Nor did they realize how close these treks would bring them to each other.

Highway Odyssey tells of treacherous moments, such as when father and son backpacked across the snowfields of the Grand Tetons and had to climb over a closed mountain pass to reach Hurricane Pass and then descend down into the Alaska Basin. It also reveals moments of candid introspection and consequent revelation, such as the trip that should have been merely a short visit with old friends, but turned instead into an unexpected increase in understanding by the author of his role and his responsibility as a single parent still struggling with the failure of his marriage.

Flint’s tale is far more than a fascinating travelogue of the western United States, although it is that, too. It also reveals the healing power of travel itself as well as the unyielding strength of family bonds forged on the road.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Alexander Flint is a native New Yorker and retired New York City high school teacher. He is also a retired military officer, having served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. His previous books are The Frozen Dozen (Rutledge Books, 2002) and Stress Survival (Xlibris, 2006). Flint edited his father’s memoirs, The Way It Was: From Second Avenue to Staten Island (Xlibris, 2005). The father of five children and six grandchildren, Flint lives on Staten Island, New York, and Hollywood Beach, Florida.
