Self-Publishing Book Spotlight: Pork Chop

David Edminister’s newest juvenile fiction uses lots of lovely alliteration to entertain the reader. He skillfully tells his tale of a brave and enterprising young pig who must overcome his fear, self-doubt and apprehension in order for him to realize his full “piggy potential.”

Award winning writer David Edminister recently announced the release of his newest children’s book, Pork Chop, published by Outskirts Press. The sprightly text and charming full color illustrations tell the story of one Porter P. Psnout, a young pig fraught with fears and how he learns to overcome his biggest fear….himself!

Plagued by nightmares about the Big Bad Wolf making his way into his sty for a little midnight “snack,” Pork Chop’s hero at first hides and cowers in the face of adversity from his disgustingly disturbed dreams. Finally, however, he makes an oath to himself one fateful night and soon enrolls in Master Tusk’s Martial Arts Academy so he can stop being a “chicken” once and for all.“Most of my literary endeavors have been inspired by my students’ lives,” says author Edminister, usually known as “Mr. Dave.” He holds a Master’s Degree in Special Education and teaches special needs children in the California public school system. His wife, Patty, works in the same school district and is the illustrator of the delightful, full color pictures that accompany Mr. Dave’s playfully alliterative text.

The Antelope Valley Literacy Coalition nominated Pork Chop as the top choice in the category of adult-authored children’s fiction and second place in the genre of adult-authored fiction overall. Mr. Dave has also won several other awards for his rhyming children’s stories, his poems and his song lyrics.

About the Author:

“Mr. Dave” currently teaches special needs children in the Antelope Valley public school system in southern California. He is a member of the National Educator’s Association, the California Teachers’ Association and a former member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Dave is a Viet Nam veteran who served in the U.S. Navy from 1968-1971.

Self-Publishing Author Testimonial – Jonna-Lynn Mandelbaum

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Jonna-Lynn K Mandelbaum earned a doctorate in education from Georgia State University and a master’s in public health from The Johns Hopkins University. She graduated from Philadelphia’s Methodist Hospital School of Nursing and received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Lebanon Valley College prior to her appointment as a missionary nurse to Mozambique. International health was the dominant focus of her professional career. She developed and implemented educational programs for health professionals around the world. Now retired, she resides in northern New Mexico with her husband and three dachshunds.

Jonna-Lynn Mandelbaum, author of Unpredictable Crossing, recently purchased Custom Shoes offered by Outskirts Press, which are the ultimate conversation starter for any self-publishing author!

~~~
AUTHOR TESTIMONIAL:
The photos posted on the Outskirts Press touting the shoes looked good, but I had reservations about how well the cover of my book would be portrayed and the clarity of the lettering for the title and my name.  Much to my delight the cover design is very clear and the words are quite legible.  They are fun to wear and show people, if they haven’t noticed them first. It was very impressive that the shoes could accommodate my orthotic making them comfortable for me to wear.  While this pair will not be a shoe for me to wear every day, they’ll be very good for special events and other times when you want to have some fun promoting your book.  I ordered a second pair as a gift for someone who is doing a lot to assist me in promoting my books in another part of the country.
I encourage everyone to consider ordering a pair of shoes, if not for yourself then as a gift for someone helping you.
~Jonna-Lynn Mandelbaum
UNPREDICTABLE CROSSING
~~~

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Unpredictable Crossing is set entirely upon a modern-day cruise ship. But at the core of the novel is the December 1972 massacre in the small village of Wiriyamu at the hands of the Portuguese military. Tristeza, then 12, lost her whole family in the bloody rampage. Now a staffer aboard the ship on its way to Lisbon, Tristeza encounters a passenger whose face is seared into her mind: Col. Perreira, the man who ordered the killings.

In a remarkable twist of fate, Amanda Allmond, a former American missionary nurse in Mozambique during the war, is also on board. Chance encounters lead to the unraveling of Col. Perreira’s carefully constructed exterior – and the flooding back of painful memories for both Amanda and Tristeza. As the two women rekindle a long-lost association, they will soon discover three decades’ passing haven’t subdued the violence inside Col. Perreira.

Now, fate has left them no choice to try to expose his long-buried shame. Col. Perreira will stop at nothing – not even murder – to maintain the silence that has followed that brutal day.

Based on the true story of the crime that has been called “Mozambique’s My Lai,” Unpredictable Crossing shines a light on this underreported chapter in world history. But the book’s combination of forceful narrative and crackling dialogue will ensure it’s forgotten no longer.

Self-Publishing Book Spotlight: Tea Party Revival

Dr. B. Leland Baker’s Tea Party Revival, The Conscience of a Conservative Reborn is an essential guide to the growing grassroots movement that favors neither a Republican nor a Democrat view, but offers an unbiased look into the demand for renewed constitutional compliance by the United States government.

The Tea Party Movement burst onto the national stage on September 12, 2009 when more than one million Americans marched under its banner from Freedom Plaza to the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. This was the largest protest ever held in the nation’s capital and was also the largest demonstration by conservatives against the current administration.

Dr. Baker’s Tea Party Revival arms its readers with the information they need to cut through the obfuscation of current events and constitutional principles by the main stream media and by the government itself. In his concise and engaging book, Dr. Baker shines a clear light on the false promises, fiscal mismanagement and enraging habits of the federal government; and, more importantly, he lays out the steps necessary to salvage the original ideals of our country’s founding fathers.

A veteran with twenty-six years of service in the U. S. Army and now a university professor, Dr. Baker is well equipped to elucidate the cancerous growth of the federal government, the big government schemes that only fleece the taxpayer, and the so-called “expansion” of rights that in truth only leads to more layers of bureaucracy, higher costs, and lower efficiency.

WARNING: This book is not for the faint-hearted. It will infuriate socialists, progressives, and RINOs, while earning accolades from fiscal conservatives, who advocate the U.S. Constitution as a contract between the governed and governing. As the Tea Party movement continues to gain momentum, Tea Party Revival provides a level headed outline of how true constitutional compliance will lead to a smaller, more limited government, which will result in lower spending, lower taxes, and greater political and economic freedom for American citizens.

Dr. Baker, in these few words from his book, has captured the essence of many Americans’ current anger and dissatisfaction with their government; “Emotionally based arguments for more money do not erase the fact that the federal government has not earned the trust of the already overburdened taxpayer.”

Tea Party Revival offers a solution for regaining that trust.

About the Author:

Dr. B. Leland Baker served in Europe, Asia and the Middle East during his twenty-six years with the U.S. Army. Upon graduating from West Point, Baker swore to support and defend the U.S. Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. His oath, academic studies, and travels to over 30 countries contributed to a life-long interest in the inter-relationships between individual freedom, government control, and economics. He is currently a professor of management at a private university.

Self-Publishing Author Spotlight: Gary Turcotte

Gary Turcotte enjoys writing novels with a touch of humor in an otherwise serious situation.  Turcotte grew up in Dover, New Hampshire, and has earned his living as a General Contractor.

I was inspired as a sophomore in High School by my English teacher, Mrs. Caroline O’Limire. She would assign the class a task of writing either short stories or poems. I had an active imagination. I thought everyone had the same. She would read my stories to not just my class, but to all the classes. When I graduated I remember that she wished me well and said she couldn’t wait to read my books when I would get published. I shrugged her compliments off thinking that possibly she says the same to nearly each student. Since then I carried my books in my mind, never getting them on paper. I was busy with a family and a construction business. Finally my daughter got her license and I had some free time to write five manuscripts over the past seven years.

To date he has published eight books with Outskirts Press, including those featured below.

Setting Kindle Pricing for Self Publishing Success

The Kindle edition of Moonlight by Keith Knapp has been one of the Outskirts Press bestselling books in the Kindle store for months, currently in the number two spot.

Knapp set the price for his Kindle edition at just $.99, and recently his paperback format hit the Outskirts Press bestseller list.

According to Knapp, “I chose the low price to get some readers willing to try out a new author. It’s not easy for someone to read a book by someone they’ve never heard of before – lots of people probably like to stick with the writers they love. But for a buck, some people will take a chance.

When it gets right down to it, it’s all about word of mouth, which I’m very thankful for. I don’t like marketing much, or promoting, or plugging my stuff…it takes away time I could be writing. But you have to do it from time to time in order to start to get the word out there to spread.”

Fortunately, Outskirts Press offers a wide variety of marketing solutions for self-publishing authors, including a Kindle edition and submission service and a Personal Marketing Assistant option, which Outskirts Press authors can purchase at any time from within their Author’s Center.
