In 2001, Amazon.com started offering their Look Inside the Book program, allowing consumers to view the inside cover, table of contents, back cover, and even a select few pages from inside the book. Search Inside the Book is the new and improved version, where consumers can “take a peek inside” a book and preview certain pages before they buy it.

When a book participates in this optional Amazon program, browsers can even use a keyword search tool that allows them to conduct additional searches within the book, which helps them confirm that the title is what they are looking for.

When customers search for books on Amazon.com, actual words and phrases from the books—not just the author and the title—are engaged to return the best possible matches. With this powerful new feature, customers can find books that may never have surfaced in previous search results. It also widens the circle of readers for a particular book.

 But this additional advantage and the improved search results rankings that result, is only available for books participating in Amazon’s Search Inside program.

3. Add tags and your top 10 keywords to Amazon’s search engine

Customers who browse for new books on Amazon typically do not search by title or author. They search by keywords or phrases: subject-specific words that describe their interest. One goal in book marketing is to do whatever is possible to improve a book’s search results ranking for applicable keywords so that your book appears higher in the search results on Amazon.The Amazon Keyword Submission option can help. Participating books are “tagged” with applicable terms and keywords, and then 10 specific keywords or phrases are submitted to Amazon’s Search Engine on the author’s behalf, along with the necessary justification for that keyword. Amazon ultimately holds discretion for what keywords are accepted or denied, but experience has shown us that books with submitted, applicable, and popular search-terms perform better in terms of search results (and ultimately sales), on average, than those books that haven’t added additional search terms.
